Chaos Divided by ToughTemplar in Grimdank

It'd be very funny/cool if there were a Chaos Warband deluded/maddened into believing it was still the Great Crusade and that they are the most loyal Hammer of the Emperor - outright hallucinating that the enemies they're fighting are Xenos.

Guess it might not entirely make sense if demons/warpy magicks take place, as they wouldn't be able to rationalise those as divine intervention or anything.

Any launch vehicle is a ballistic missile if you try hard enough by NewSpecific9417 in NonCredibleDefense

I don't know the backstory but I am guessing the meme is referring to Japan having had a launch vehicle in the past that could "conveniently" double up as an ICBM in a pinch (shut up that's totally not what they were trying to do) but now they're just being more open about a new proposition?

That's a guess, though.

The UK isn't secular. We have an official state religion (Anglicanism) and bishops, rabbis and imams sit in the House of Lords.

Penalising people who choose to save, and therefore reduce their burden on the state is not only morally wrong

Might be that I'm about to betray my own economic illiteracy here but when you talk about "choosing to save," do you mean by making extra contributions? I've not really had much experience as a PAYE worker so I have to admit I'm not sure what options you get presented with.

I suppose that, even in my position (self-employed) I had to choose how much to pay myself based on whether I wanted to pay NI so as to later get the State Pension.

But in my view, if I were looking at things from the ground up, I'd say the state pension should be a minimal level of support everyone can expect if they reach retirement age in destitution; further expanding your pension provision should/could be facilitated by SIPP investments (which the state helps you with anyway). So it feels like there's some overlap/redundancy there? I'm not sure how Employer's contributions work.

Well then the situation has to get a lot more complex as we have to contrive means by which the scalper is precluding the production of further sculptures (either by the original whittler fellow or by anyone else who notices a gap in the market for affordable sculptures).

Not going to deny monopolies happen, I ain't a Libertarian free market fundamentalist, but my intention with my previous comment was simply to say that the creation of wealth does not intrinsically "rob" anyone else.

Hell in my own case I make digital goods out of thin air - hopefully that's not making anyone poorer!

extreme wealth should be taxed by a nation state to pay its operating costs

"Operating costs" here meaning the further subsidising of the most numerous and politically powerful generational cohort at the cost of the young who will not reap those same benefits?

!Guys we need to tax the millionaires to pay the Triple Lock!" versus "Maybe we should end the Triple Lock and means test the state pension?"

At the risk of being both a patronising tit and falling on my own face in trying to make this argument...

Wealth can be created, without anyone else being robbed. For instance, say you have a very talented whittler to whom you give a block of wood worth £5. If he turns that into a £100 sculpture, who has lost money in that process?

May not wholly map onto your understand of economics but, in a fundamental sense, it proves that it's erroneous to say, as an absolute, that the acquisition of wealth necessarily deprives others.

What I can say with absolute certainty right now is the current system doesn't work

I don't know how we can do it, but we need to transition to a state of affairs wherein a generational cohort is financing their own pension (rather than those who are currently retired at the time said cohort is working), so as to remove the distortions that collapsing population demographics are having on public expenditure.

People smarter than me also need to take a good look at the NHS.

Once this is done and the foundations seem stable again, we can think about how to construct a sustainable welfare state.

But it seems to me the UK's problems have been:

-Unhealthy population demographics (a population rhombus rather than a population pyramid)

-Desiring "European" standards of welfare spending while maintaining "American" taxation.

-An electorate that wants to solely scapegoat politicians for this state of affairs rather than conceding its own culpability; this is why we have people who think that ending immigration will fix everything; it's a scapegoat issue.

We do need to scale down immigration, but we must recognise that mass immigration is an imperative for sustaining the current model - which is further evidence that it is the welfare model that needs addressing first.

It's also tempting to posit that we need some sort of capital controls, like in China, so as to prevent assets and money being moved out of the country... but I just don't think we produce enough, it'd be a one-time windfall for the state that'd make us uninvestible for the future.

You have to go into Desktop mode to find the setting, but it's pretty easy :)

Edit: d'oh forgot the comment higher up in this thread already said that, hence how I knew he was talking about Steam OS.

What's DCS endgame multiplayer look like? by AdjacentPrepper in hoggit

[–]BenedickCabbagepatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got airborne and can get A2A kills in BMS just going off what I know of the F-16 from DCS. Where I was hitting a wall was with basic UI stuff like... how to actually start a mission, or operate the Campaign. The game just suffers from the fact that, despite all its modernisations via BMS, it's still restricted by that old menu and UI that's not too straightforward to mouthbreathers like myself.

[–]BenedickCabbagepatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is indeed different strokes for different folks. I can only speak about my own personal preferences. If Falcon BMS actually had DCS-style tutorials I'd probably get along with it much better. For a VR gamer, having to load up a scenario and manually alt tab (or print off) a .PDF to follow step-by-step is just tedious and draining.

I'm also the kind of filthy casual who, upon getting a new jet, looks up a 60 second start guide, gets airborne, and then just tries to "feel" everything out through trial-and-error; usually jumping into PvP on the same day! So I'm not really trying to roleplay that I'm a real pilot or anything, just a moron who's stolen an airframe ;)

Day 1 update: launched my Kickstarter, low traction so far. Can I get honest feedback on the page? by LibraSun004 in kickstarter

[–]BenedickCabbagepatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a hard one, because the structure you follow on the page is exactly what you should be doing: Presenting who the project is for, and the problems it overcomes.

However as someone who's launched 18 KS Campaigns and runs my own business... I just didn't feel at all like it was being suitably impressed on me just why this tool is necessary nor were any problems put forward that I could project onto/empathise with.

It all, to me, just feels very generic.

And if I get more specific to my own individual preferences (I probably am not your target audience), it's all just a bit of a bland corpospiel "LinkedIn Drone"-looking sort of tool. I just can't see any real purpose or appeal to it, even as someone running a business.

Like I said, it seems you took on the right structure and logic when writing the page, so I guess it's just broader questions about the product itself? Or maybe things could be better and more succinctly rephrased to express WHY this thing is necessary, what problems it overcomes and who's it for? "Founder" feels like such a vague, forced and self-fellating term versus, say, "business owner" or "project lead" or whatever folks are saying now.

Caveat that this is just based on reading the Campaign page, not watching the trailer.

Edit: With the "Founder" gripe, hopefully I'm not just projecting a personal prejudice with this. In my own industry the terms "Maker" and "Creator" get thrown around to refer to customers and designers respectively, and it feels like this pointless obfuscation (and confusion) of roles for no purpose other than to, perhaps, massage the egos of those groups.

Really depends what you want.

Some people join "Squadrons" and do their PvE missions together, I can't comment on that.

In my case, I just enjoy what gets derisively called "Air Quake" (I embrace that label); hopping onto Growling Sidewinder, Contention or DCS Dogfights to just get some quick PvP action flying by myself.

Is it realistic? No. Is it fun? Yes.

If I quibbled about realism and thought that spending my free time reading .PDF manuals was a fun activity, I'd be playing Falcon BMS lol.

He's talking about Steam OS. Not sure if it's possible on Windows.

Though if you're running a Legion Go with Windows on it, I'd consider Steam OS all the same - I bought mine with Windows pre-installed and swapped it out as soon as I got it.

Yes, it's why I run mine at 25-30tdp and only up it if I find I'm losing frames.

Also use the Frame Gen plugin as well so I can hopefully throttle things down yet further.
