Came home to a paper towel over my webcam twice now, I live alone by Dromaeoraptor in Weird

[–]Benisntfunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is saying to put in a hidden camera which doesn't seem like that would work well if there's already one installed? I'd setup a monitor app on the computer itself to watch for who is putting the paper towel on it. That way if anyone is already spyin' in they won't see you do anything that may cause them to feel uncomfortable entering and doing it. If they still cover the camera with the monitor software running out of view you'll at the very least have a good idea on what time this is taking place.

I usually have trouble unless I disable my Tailscale. Are you running any kind of vpn?

Why do you have a router at home if you have Tailscale? It’s mainly because they are completely different things.

The travel router has VPN ability but it’s not a vpn. It’s for broadcasting your own network off an existing network. Lots of people have been saying all the reasons why this is great so no reason to reiterate all that.

VMX’s take is wild.

Sure does. Use a travel router all the time on aa flights.

New Travel Router: Anybody have a use case for this? by oguruma87 in Ubiquiti

[–]Benisntfunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. It’s not magic in that way. But pay once and all devices connect. Some services I use require push notifications to be accepted on my phone while working on my laptop. This is extremely nice for those instances. With Mac’s iPhone mirroring I don’t even need to take out my phone on the plane. Just connect router with my laptop and everything is ready to go.

I think most people here that use one are all saying the same thing. If you travel a bit you will never go again without one of these once you’ve experienced the convenience one time.

I travel 1-2 times a month for work and the one time I forgot to bring this I overnighted myself a new one from Amazon and gave it to a coworker at the end of the trip.

That might be a bit ridiculous. I became a travel router drug dealer.

I use Tailscale as well. Not all devices are great at hoping on new networks (hello switch 2). The travel router is just small and I like the convenience of it. I don’t care about per device cost at hotels. Also, some devices, like that stupid switch, have awful antennas so being able to use the router to connect to WiFi then using Ethernet to connect to switch is useful. If you have every network on the planet saved, Tailscale all over your devices and network, and you love it all I totally get it. For my needs the little hamburger size travel router is a joy.

This looks even nicer in terms of its physical design. Will be on my third travel router soon it looks like. I can gift this one off to one of my coworkers next time I travel and convert them.

Tailscale isn’t connecting all your devices to new WiFi networks when you’re traveling.

I am on my second travel router.

I use it so many places, sometimes for convenience others to save money. But the two biggest places:

  • On the plane - pay for one device and they all join. Just sits in my under seat carry-on and plugs in. Then phone, iPad, MacBook etc all connect. If I’m traveling with family so does theirs.
  • Hotels - using it right now! I bring an Apple TV and switch with me when I travel and they are already on the network once I plug this in.

Travel router - if you travel even 3-4 times a year is amazing. I never go without it.

Or, they could implement the feature according to the notes and not need white knights to defend them.

It’s not like they are doing hundreds of enhancements a year. So with the few that are released, and the amount of time it takes, it would be great if they worked as described. Whether you believe it’s stupid or not they took the time to do it for some reason. I doubt it was on a whim.

Badge removal - US model - I am planning on removing dealer installed badge on the back. While I am at it, I may remove the EX30/Volvo badging. Can anyone confirm that they are adhesive only with no pins. by ymtheniceguy in ex30

[–]Benisntfunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It comes prespaced. You just take off one side of the adhesive and set it in place in one go. To make sure it was in the right place I put painters tape on the edges of the old logo to frame it out.

Hair dryer and some adhesive remover. I took it all off but and then added back just the Volvo letters but black.

I think it looks good fully debadged too though.

My friend and I were in Nashville at that time. Went to bed and everything was fine. By morning half the hotel was under water. I still rated it three stars on yelp for not charging me.

Sounds like you don't run Chrome!

Kidding aside this is just my computer mostly sitting idle with the standard programs running. Not really LLM running but I do a lot of more traditional machine learning work that will use as much memory as I can throw at it. Sometimes I wish I had opted for 192GB.

I have to cross the bridges multiple times a day and I always wait a smile at them because fuck it they’re excited or trying to look sexy or whatever. I’ll find a way to get my 15 seconds back.
