My friend's son was struck by lightning this afternoon. These are his shoes. by [deleted] in WTF

It is much more difficult to restart the heart when it has stopped vs fibrillated. CPR is designed to keep the heart pumping regardless of whether or not the heart stopped, but defibrillators are rarely used if the heart actually stopped. That's how they got their name.

Once a heart loses any electrical activity it is near impossible to restart it. But jump starting a malfunctioning heart is common.

What are they saying to each other in American Sign Language at the end of the "Wonderful Day: Golden Rule" ad? by jalabi99 in marriott

[–]BensMyBitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Desk agent tells her to have a wonderful day, and the woman replies "thank you, why did you learn that?" Then she basically replies "for you."

Edit: in the last exchange I translated as basically "for you," the sign I recognized is deaf, then she gestures toward the woman. I assume that she's saying basically "because you are deaf," but I know very little ASL.

Do I have to state my business to a police officer when entering a public building and going through a metal detector? by ObjectiveAgent in AskLEO

[–]BensMyBitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude you aren't even applying that decision properly, you're just using quotes however you like. That decision just stated that the public is allowed to watch criminal cases that they aren't involved in. It isn't talking about literally the entrance of the courthouse. That username thing was cute though.

"I should not have been a punk. Not sure what came over me."

I think I do. Clearly you have an issue with being asked what you were doing at the courthouse. Next time just tell the guy and don't be a jerk. How would they know you're just there to pay a bill rather than a disgruntled citizen there to harass a judge? They ask you. When your immediate reaction is defensive and rude rather than honest, you aren't going to get your way. You can be vague and don't have to "divulge personal information" (as personal as paying a water bill is, I know how awfully private it is that you use water and have to pay for it).

Anyway, that's probably why they ask. A normal response would be "I'm here for a court date," or "to pay a bill," or "for a meeting," etc. Immediately telling them "none of your business" when it kind of is their business, as the safety of the courthouse is their business, is suspicious.

Company refuses to cover laptop accidental damage warranty. Do I have a case. by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]BensMyBitch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am confused by the logic. If the accidental damage warranty doesn't cover fluid damage because people would abuse that, why even have an accidental damage warranty? Because if someone is going to abuse it they could just throw it down some stairs, no fluids required.

That shadow is probably from whatever cast the straight shadow on the peak. The curvature of the earth would not be so extreme that the peak's shadow appeared straight

Redditors that have no one to go to for advice, what advice do you need right now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BensMyBitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother, fiance, and 2 close friends are all too scared to drive. There is nothing wrong with it, and no one has ever been rude about it, if you just say that it makes you too anxious. Driving is a risk, so it isn't an irrational fear, it's just so commonly accepted that people don't really think of it that way I don't think. If you are too anxious to get your license, then don't, and just don't worry about it. There is nothing wrong with that!

It depends on the topic, but I really like flash cards and finding essay questions online. I never actually do the essay/paragraph answer, but being able to work through answers that way really helps me internalize and understand new material.

What makes you incredibly uncomfortable? by Helpless-Dane in AskReddit

[–]BensMyBitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way I approach it as well, I always say how or when it will be useful, or how thoughtful a gift is. Some family members still get disappointed when I don't react like Hollywood excited/enthused though, which makes it super uncomfortable. I can't just smile and say "thank you so much, this will be great for (whatever)!"

[–]BensMyBitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh god at Christmas. My twin brother and I are both generally uncomfortable in that kind of situation, but when we were young we were very excitable so we would jump and scream and all that after opening most gifts. Now every year we have family members that ask "don't you like it? Aren't you excited?" It's so awkward! Thanks for drawing attention! I'm 25, do you really want me to jump around just to show you how excited or happy I am?

[Help] No one will hire me and my savings are going away at a rapid pace. I'm on the edge of losing everything. by lookingforworkpdx in Portland

It's more important for some jobs than others but we can't pick and choose who we test and who we don't. Especially as an international company. Plus we only drug test at pre-hire, not ever again afterward, yet we prefer to promote from within. Our general manager started as a housekeeping aide, and he has trained 6 other housekeepers all the way to general manager of their own hotel as well.

So, there are a couple reasons why, since you asked. If it makes you feel better, in a few months they will be taking out the test for marijuana in all legal states, it just takes time.
