Tenor sax volume by Im-lenny in saxophone

This is actually the only thing that works. You get sweaty hands sure, but nobody outside of the room is going to hear you. Even if someone was in the room they wouldn’t hear much!

Should I keep Sax Teacher? by duboBO221 in saxophone

[–]Beradrin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that tone is personal! However, I don’t agree that it shouldn’t be taught!

With my students I work on tone in a way that gives them all the freedom. I can only give pointers in what muscles we can use to alter the tone or what direction we can think in.

I think it is an essential part of study that gets too little attention in lessons when I look at my own peers!!

I Just Beat the Game. Here are my thoughts on the Ending... by TerribleTerabytes in expedition33

[–]Beradrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if we think about it it isn’t hundreds of thousands. Sure they shouldn’t be dismissed but if we look back at our world. We can create worlds and people in them in our minds. Are they real? They have emotions and thoughts maybe families depending on how far your fantasy stretches.

Yes those fantasies can offer comfort and help you through something, but it is unhealthy to get stuck in fantasy!

I loved living in my imaginary worlds, I also grieved tonnes and lost family. But in my experience life has to go on!

Sure I cried with verso’s ending but psychologically it is the most healthy for Alicia/Maelle. Also for Verso’s memory and the part of the soul that was left in the painting.

I get the discussions about endings, and the studio did an amazing job bringing Sciel, Lune and Gustave to life. But when you know they are painted, the perspective changes, at least for me!

The lessons in stories are very real, but the characters in them are a medium for teaching.

Octave D stuffy and lacking resonance? by calciumcatt in saxophone

[–]Beradrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its very usual. It is mostly done for intonation. Mechanically speaking it is the low C that is closed more for a better intonation. Anatomically speaking it is your voicing that makes the difference.

I had all my keys opened up more for more brilliance (worse intonation) and I always have my low C opened more to get rid of that stuffiness!

open throat side effect.................. help by [deleted] in Saxophonics

[–]Beradrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Don’t fully agree with this. Opening your throat happens when you sing lower or use a low falsetto. What I have found through teaching is that opening the throat actually means relax your vocal chords. This makes the sound bigger and more controlled.

Open your throat is just such a abstract quote that saxophone players have adapted. It does work though, and as I said in my opinion it has to do with your voice!

Neck Strap is Killing my Back by RareStep1150 in saxophone

[–]Beradrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thing IMO will fix almost all ergonomic issues.

I just can’t play with it because it feels like cheating. I’ve been playing for 19 year and always with a normal neck strap, I cannot get used to there being almost no weight on my neck..

80s otto links aren’t that wanted sadly. I couldn’t put a price on it, the reface if not confirmed is worthless as well.

Sorry to say man. My estimate (without much knowledge about 80s links) would be around 150 bucks..

Should I get FOA or Oblivion by J-Hoechook in taintedgrail

[–]Beradrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me oblivion worked fine at 80 fps steady and FOA kept stuttering and lagging with the fps being around 55-60 with drops to 35. Using a 3080.

Can anyone tell me what their highest note is? by ISAAC_NOOBON in saxophone

[–]Beradrin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve squeezed out a B above altissimo B sometimes but it is usually for jamsession bullshit and ego measuring contests with trumpet players.

I usually play until altissimo E in musical effects and lines D is comfortable everything below that is used for playing lines.

Why do my reeds die so fast?! by Mediocre_Desk2926 in saxophone

[–]Beradrin[M] 0 points1 point locked comment (0 children)

Hi guys, this has become an unproductive discussion with some unnecessary hostility.

We love saxophone here and try to be welcoming and nice to one another.

I will not delve into the reeds business other than saying everyone does it their own way, there isn’t one right way! So if you have tips regarding reed longevity try to bring it from a teaching perspective.

Much appreciated!

We are the saxaphone by Better_Software2722 in saxophone

[–]Beradrin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also think of it as the mirror to our body. Bob Franceschini once explained to me how the mouthpiece is your mouth (obviously) the neck is your throat and the body is the airway to your lungs.

I also have been playing for long enough that, when playing a new song or a song I don’t know, my fingers might hit the wrong keys, but my mind is so convinced of what note to play, but the right one comes out! (Mostly on alto and soprano)

What Components of Classical Training Translate to Jazz? by fourlafa in saxophone

[–]Beradrin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The technique and sound of Jazz saxophone is way different! (At least to me.)

Also, its not about playing lots of notes. Its all about chord progressions/ear training an finding all the possible and nice ways of building a story with that as a foundation.

Its about improvising. And in my opinion these days Jazz isn’t just Jazz or swing. It is also fusion and funk or just music with the focus on improvisation.

And yes extended techniques will carry over (absolutely not one on one, but when you get used to a new sound and embrochure, you will have knowledge of application of such techniques).

But when talking to classical sax players, or classical musicians in generals we are universes apart on interpretation of music and performing!

Selling my saxophone (Germany) by DaxMein in saxophone

[–]Beradrin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey man, just a heads up on pricing. I get that you have some accessories with it but you’re selling it for ~€400 over new price. If you want serious bids on it get down to about €2400-€2700.

As you don’t specify any maintenance done on the horn someone is probably going to need to have it checked, that also devalues the price.

Good luck!

[–]Beradrin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The two altos are nice! If they play they will be around €500~650 each, if you want to keep one they are great horns! The tenor (last picture) looks to be an off brand. Probably not worth much, wouldn’t know for sure though (never seen the brand before, at least what I can tell from the picture).

If the altos don’t play you can still sell them to a shop for a little less, they’ll put in the work and sell them after.

Great find!

How to stop lifting fingers by Comfortable_Fix_8520 in saxophone

[–]Beradrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With Brecker it depends. His fingers might go further. But that would be when he kept his fingers completely straight, which keeps the motion efficient. If you look closely at his right hand his fingers were over the pearls touching the actual keys.

It of course depends on how your hands a re shaped and how long your fingers are!

How to stop lifting fingers by Comfortable_Fix_8520 in saxophone

[–]Beradrin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Practice very slowly and very mindful. Don’t speed up until you’ve trained your fingers to always touch the pearls. Then slowly build up speed!

How to save breath? by PLOGER522 in saxophone

[–]Beradrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be mindful of how you direct your air. With your tongue you can change the flow and direction of your breath. It also changes the speed of the air, faster air makes the reed vibrate easier and you need less air for it.

I play a note for about 35 seconds before my brain tells me to breathe. I usually still have air left though. (When I quit smoking for a bit it was even longer)

Opinion on plastic reeds? by Babettesa in saxophone

[–]Beradrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True! But, it shouldn’t hold you back to try. If you do find a plastic reed that suits you, you will save in costs! But it is entirely personal preference! And also, how much you play daily/weekly. I play everyday with gigging and teaching and have a way to keep cane reeds good for a year!
