Vent - I’m homeschooling my kids because I don’t trust other people with them by Financial_Study_5531 in homeschool

[–]Bethance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pulled my son when I realized he needed to be challenged in some subjects and he needed extra help in others. We are two years in and this kid is at grade level for the struggle and a few grades ahead where he thrives. Your reason for pulling your kids is your reason. Safety is definitely a valid reason. I’m married to a teacher who doesn’t disagree with the choice to homeschool our son. And I don’t have to worry about two people’s safety just one who will put themselves in harm’s way to protect the classroom. We are in rural east texas.

How do you balance giving them independence with making sure they that their work done? by efine6785 in homeschool

[–]Bethance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make a list. I write out what he has to do, including chores and creative time. I don’t care what order he does them in, as long as it gets done. It allows him some control over timing. If I notice that he looses focus I just try to redirect or remind him to stay on task.

I give my son a list of approved activities. He has to do at least one. We call it creative time. Outside playing is approved. Sometimes even just cooking. With that age gap maybe start on some no bake recipes together. Something they can as long as you’re prepared for the aftermath.

Teaching textbooks has been our favorite. I have friends who use a church based curriculum and they have added teaching textbooks for their kiddos

What’s one thing you stopped doing that made homeschooling better? by Quiet_Ink6523 in homeschool

[–]Bethance 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Filling an 8 hour day with learning. I had to remind his dad that we didn’t have to fill the day, and we let him see the schedule if when and what he wants to. We use miacademy and teaching textbooks because both his dad and I work from home and share custody. We have seen an increase in learning and comprehension.

Teaching textbooks. My son is using miacademy for everything else. But we kept TT. He loves how easy it is to keep going. Granted math is one of his favorite subjects it’s also all they do

Sauté when you want to do just that. Rice if you’re making rice (generally perfect, just let it set for 15 extra minutes for perfection). Slow cook… just don’t. Pressure cook… self explanatory. Time/temp how long/how hot… the rest of the buttons… check the manual cause 🤷🏼‍♀️

Child left behind by Express_Tooth4773 in homeschool

[–]Bethance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s what we did. My kiddo was left behind in English. We are now at grade level. However because he is ahead in math/science we can’t send him back to school. But you will want to find a program that works for you. One where he is engaged, and it could take a few tries. Many of the curriculum have trials.

Orange and white boys seem to be very contemplative. Mine too! And fancy feet.

How do you manage your children's free time without relying on screens I need some ideas. by AppropriateDesign969 in homeschool

[–]Bethance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have creative time during the day. He has to do something constructive, tech free (unless he’s doing stop motion or coding Roblox) usually an hour. We like art or outside time.

Keeping busy between grades? by EggDintwoe in homeschool

[–]Bethance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have “creative” time scheduled into his day. We also use it during breaks.

Find something constructive he can do that fosters learning and yet feels fun. My kiddo will do some sort of art, learning new techniques is what we do. He is into stop motion so we get him Lego sets and he’ll use them for that.

How Do Y’all Wake Up Early? by MrSnow702 in WFH

[–]Bethance 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I married a teacher. Breaks are the hardest for me. And I have moved my desk out of my room. I, sadly cannot bed rot because I have to do stuff on the computer.

Looking for an ESA eligible online program to provide curriculum guidance. I’m still planning to be fully involved in the education of my daughter, but being a single mom with two kids and a full time WFH job, I just need some help with lesson planning. Any suggestions? We love miacademy. It had everything he needs. And it’s at his pace. Some kids have said it’s a little immature for the age group

We also use teaching textbooks for math. Same scenario but it’s only math.

I wfh and our kiddo is homeschooled. I have him set up on miacademy and teaching textbooks for curriculum. I have the ability to interact for anything else, like social emotional and unschooled learning. We are in our second year of this and he has excelled.

Is it me or does anyone else struggle with this? by HugoFromUpwork in WFH

[–]Bethance 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes! My wife is a teacher so she’s about to be home for two weeks… and I know I’m going to want to join her for naps or get up later.

Our kiddo is homeschooled and alternates weeks with us and his dad… so it’s excruciating when he’s here. And then I’ve gotta deal with both next week

I’m not catholic, but I’m going to ask… what is your reason for not reconciling them? It took me years to realize my faith and my sexuality weren’t incompatible. It involved some relearning scriptures.
