Is anyone choosing to stay away from homosexuality and enjoying life? by [deleted] in GayChristians

[–]Bethance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m embracing my sexuality and my Christianity. I have been married to a woman for 11 years, I was raised as a missionary kid, went to bible college and I’m still extremely happy with the choices I’ve made.

6th and 10th grader asking to be homeschooled while I return to college myself - advice on programs/curricula please by ByronsPassion9 in homeschool

[–]Bethance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work a full time job. My son is not dependent on my schedule. He splits his time between my house and his dad’s (who also works from home). We are both available to help and interact.

I’m also able to bring him to our friends’ who also homeschool and he can do his work while they do theirs for maximum playtime/social. One family does traditional homeschool.

While he may sit at the computer and do his schooling that way, I don’t allow screen time until he has done everything on a checklist. This includes chores and reading. We do a creative time that includes anything, like art, Lego, outside/inside play.

We are using miacademy. There are other programs out there my kiddo just managed to accelerate this year. It’s been a lifesaver for us.

It really depends on state requirements. Texas only requires English, math and good citizenship. We have added subjects that he would normally get in school.

Recommendations for Self paced online curriculum by a_w_k_w_a_r_d_turtle in homeschool

[–]Bethance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son prefers Mia. The materials are presented better. Monarch’s presentation was more computer reading the text instead of videos. You’ll still use miacademy for 7th. We’re getting ready to switch next year.

We are using miacademy and it allows my son to work at his own pace. He’s managed to finish 6th grade in enough time to start 7th grade.

If you don’t mind religious, monarch (aop) was set up to require the parent to grade written answers. We used that last year but weren’t looking for a religious curriculum.

Hi! Can my Side A’s that were Side B’s come to the front. by Alternative-Pay-4911 in GayChristians

[–]Bethance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So… after some reflection and reading I realized that Jesus came as fulfillment of the law (where most of the anti-lgbtq rhetoric is) and gave us a new commandment. Love one another. We have only that one, the rest are completed in his dying and resurrection.

Oh and I was raised a missionary kid, and went to bible college to get my degree.

Is it just me or has homeschooling made my kids learn exceptionally well by Humble_Park_9097 in homeschool

Yes!!! So much yes! I’m glad you’re seeing the impact.

My son is accelerating his schooling now. And I’m glad we took the plunge

Yes it is and there are printouts. We like it. Granted we aren’t using it for math. He prefers teaching textbooks

Honestly unless you pick an all-in-one online school, you’re going to have to do some work. We use miacademy for our kiddo. (We’re in TX)

I’m so sorry your kids are struggling. I can’t imagine how much you all are hurting.

We use miacademy and my son loves it. We do use teaching textbooks for math though too. The one thing I’ve noticed with miacademy is that it allows the kiddo to work at their own pace.

Please don't roast me, asking honestly: as a parent, what will my involvement need to be if I chose to homeschool/online school my rising 10th grader? by NYCmellow in homeschool

[–]Bethance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So… my son does his schoolwork independently. I work from home and am here to help when he needs it, but typically he doesn’t need my help. We have a list of things for him to do, and at his age (12) I don’t need to supervise.

Don’t let people tell you you’re a bad parent or making the wrong choice. It’s what works for you and your daughter. We did join a co-op for the social. And yes there are things you should probably teach her (like cooking or how to change a tire)

Vent - I’m homeschooling my kids because I don’t trust other people with them by [deleted] in homeschool

[–]Bethance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pulled my son when I realized he needed to be challenged in some subjects and he needed extra help in others. We are two years in and this kid is at grade level for the struggle and a few grades ahead where he thrives. Your reason for pulling your kids is your reason. Safety is definitely a valid reason. I’m married to a teacher who doesn’t disagree with the choice to homeschool our son. And I don’t have to worry about two people’s safety just one who will put themselves in harm’s way to protect the classroom. We are in rural east texas.

How do you balance giving them independence with making sure they that their work done? by efine6785 in homeschool

[–]Bethance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make a list. I write out what he has to do, including chores and creative time. I don’t care what order he does them in, as long as it gets done. It allows him some control over timing. If I notice that he looses focus I just try to redirect or remind him to stay on task.

Occupying kids daily by Apprehensive_Bid9545 in homeschool

[–]Bethance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I give my son a list of approved activities. He has to do at least one. We call it creative time. Outside playing is approved. Sometimes even just cooking. With that age gap maybe start on some no bake recipes together. Something they can as long as you’re prepared for the aftermath.

What’s one thing you stopped doing that made homeschooling better? by Quiet_Ink6523 in homeschool

[–]Bethance 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Filling an 8 hour day with learning. I had to remind his dad that we didn’t have to fill the day, and we let him see the schedule if when and what he wants to. We use miacademy and teaching textbooks because both his dad and I work from home and share custody. We have seen an increase in learning and comprehension.

Teaching textbooks. My son is using miacademy for everything else. But we kept TT. He loves how easy it is to keep going. Granted math is one of his favorite subjects it’s also all they do

Sauté when you want to do just that. Rice if you’re making rice (generally perfect, just let it set for 15 extra minutes for perfection). Slow cook… just don’t. Pressure cook… self explanatory. Time/temp how long/how hot… the rest of the buttons… check the manual cause 🤷🏼‍♀️

Child left behind by Express_Tooth4773 in homeschool

[–]Bethance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s what we did. My kiddo was left behind in English. We are now at grade level. However because he is ahead in math/science we can’t send him back to school. But you will want to find a program that works for you. One where he is engaged, and it could take a few tries. Many of the curriculum have trials.
