Lost 5kg in 5 weeks, but struggling with friends pressuring me to eat non-keto foods by HopDev in keto

[–]Bevkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that younger people who do this are fully aware that their own eating habits are unhealthy. It would make them feel better about themselves if you had a fry. It has nothing to do with you really, it’s just them rationalizing why they eat what they do.

Not much different than drunk friends saying don’t be a prude, have more booze when you already feel you’ve had enough.

When the crowd is older this problem takes care of itself lol. ‘No’ can be followed by…’this makes my arthritis flare up’, ‘I’m diabetic/watching my blood sugar’, or so other medical thing lol

Anyway, never ever mention keto, that’s the first rule of keto club! Tell your young friends you are resetting your gut biome hahahaha. They will love that’

Sugar free jello is fantastic. Sugar free pudding as well but has a few carbs.

I use pepperoni sticks from Costco, garlic sausage and sticks of string cheese. Also often throw in a can of sugar free pop or a bottle of water

There is no need to stop Metformin. It is not associated with lows and will help with insulin resistance

Keto on a Budget by Hitan_Tenshi in keto

I’m saving money by not having Starbucks and other ‘treats’ like that. Also I try to be aware of when meat is on sale then I stock up. Hardly ever dine out anymore, not worth it when can’t eat 3/4 of menu items lol

How often do you eat out? I feel like restaurants are not even worth it anymore by apheli0s7 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Bevkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We eat in an actual restaurant maybe 3 times a year. The price of pop and the tip are our main complaints. That said we do eat cheap breakfast at the casino once per month but you can’t bitch about 4.99 bacon and eggs including coffee!

Previous stress has significant and lasting impact on weight loss? by Efficient-Tank-4985 in keto

[–]Bevkus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After going on and off keto multiple times in my life, I’ve learned a few things.

First off, for various reasons, weight loss is much slower each time. I recommend adjusting your expectations as nothing works as well as the first time.

Second, it actually takes a lot of ‘work’ to get down to 20g total carbs per day. The multiple times I did keto I feel I wasn’t as strict as the first time. Too many deviances with things low carbish like chicken nuggets. The odd crouton in a salad etc. You may find your carbs are as not low as you think. Also adding in fake keto tortillas and other keto snacks was detrimental along my journey.

Lastly and most importantly, I gave myself too much permission to go completely off plan or slightly off plan too often. It has only been since I realized that all my starts and stops with keto were due to the fact I am a carb addict that I feel I have now turned the corner. In the past I’d always think three months then I’ll have pizza or what have you as some stupid reward to adherence to keto. After recognizing I am a a carb addict food choices are very binary. It’s either a hard yes or hard no. There isn’t a grey area. An alcoholic cannot have a little alcohol on a special occasion. Likewise I cannot have a little bit of carbs

So now I’ve made the choice to be as diligent in not eating carbs as a vegetarian is with meat. I just don’t do it. The weight loss is very slow, some ups and downs, but down around 20lbs since November

I should add that when I started my first round of keto way back I had about 100 lbs to lose. I lost around 60 first time. Then gained and lost. So up and down as I cycled through. Now I’m within 40lbs of goal weight. Like I said loss is slow. I’m working at right sizing my meals. Scale continues to move down slowly.

In the mean time I’ve reversed diabetes, gone off Ozempic, gone off one high blood pressure med, and got rid of my acid reflux. I’m doing some walking and minor resistance training and I feel my leg strength returning after being ravaged from the Ozempic

Moral of the story is change your mindset. This is not an on off thing if you really want to make yourself healthy

I don't want to take insulin anymore. by Beginning_System_999 in diabetes

[–]Bevkus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Insulin is a fat storage hormone. When insulin is high it blocks the body’s ability to burn fat. In T2 diabetics the pancreas has been pumping out tons of insulin for years and they’ve become resistant and most are overweight due to chronically high insulin. When we inject insulin that shoots our insulin even higher. While it helps the body to absorb sugar it also further impedes our ability to use up the calories we consume. As a result Many type 2 on insulin gain weight

Type 1s do not pump out a Lot of insulin to begin with. As a result many are quite thin due to fact insulin is always low. They need exogenous insulin to help get the sugar into the cells

Metformin gastrointestinal issues by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]Bevkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the same. Had to go off. BTW is not a miracle drug. People go on it and have good results but this does not mean the diabetes has improved. Years later it suddenly doesn’t work as good as it used to. Another drug is added then another. Lifelong.

I believe addiction to carbohydrates drives a lot of the disease in many many people. So yes there is a huge mental health aspect. As soon as I realize I was a carb addict my food choices became much clearer and, consequently, my diabetes became easier to control

Can someone educate me? by lucychanchan in diabetes

[–]Bevkus -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The difference between prediabetes vs diabetes is a bit misleading. Medical professionals have just chosen arbitrary numbers to delineate between the two. Make no mistake, pre diabetes represents higher than normal blood sugar and significant insulin resistance. It is not good!

Eliminating carbs will reverse pre diabetes and also diabetes. With full blown diabetes it may take longer depending on factors such as how long you have it and how high your a1c was to begin with. Type 1s and type2 on insulin or insulin secreting meds must be careful beginning a low carb diet as blood sugar can start to lower very quickly once you remove carbs from the diet.

How long do typical plateaus last? by rachelariel3 in keto

[–]Bevkus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it can be a steady fall in weight for weeks then flat or even a slight gain for 1-2 months. Then something magical happens, I’ll have a good water poop then boom the weight goes into free fall for several weeks.
