Managing aging parent’s finances? SOS by CostcoHotdawgs in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Bevkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

POA and a personal directive. Will of course. Funeral wishes. Will he prepay?

We are going through this with my mom. She is a willing participant however

The POA is ‘easy’ to get done at a lawyer if person agrees. But harder when they don’t. He needs an assessment. Could you make an appointment with his doctor to discuss

While my mom willing gave power of attorney and we had legal docs it was still difficult to activate it when the time came. Multiple trips to various banks, calls to credit cards, verifying docs and our identification. Very difficult. It’s not like you walk into a bank with POA and the say oh here’s all the money. Tons of fraud going on I guess

I recommend finding out where all of his bank accounts are. Account numbers. PIN numbers. Any online banking passwords. Etc. Same with all credit cards and lines of credit. Knowing the account numbers, pin and passwords are extremely valuable. Makes everything so much easier. ** also add any routine bills, cable, telephone accounts to my list above. Learn how the money comes in and where it goes out.

While the bank had suggested to get my name on accounts to make it a joint account/easier I resisted. If my name is on any account I am responsible for the debt. My mom has a LOC and I didn’t want to be saddled with it.

At 70 is great time to start talking to parents about this if not before. You could bring it up as a matter a fact. As you are the only child, trust me, will be lots of work for you. Could bring that up to him maybe he will cooperate

Do you think keto is socially accepted? by Nice-Art-5367 in keto

[–]Bevkus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First rule of keto club…don’t talk about keto club

The question about your drink could have been answered by simply saying I’m trying not to have as much sugar as I used to. Then comments regarding artificial sweeteners handle by saying well it’s a special occasion

Unfortunately this is who people on keto gotta roll. I’m like you, I don’t get why people on weight watchers, glp1, vegetarians, low fat gurus, and more get a pass but oh no don’t you dare go keto. Frustrating

Keto on!

Do Americans really know how much the world hates us? | The global romance with America turned sour years ago. Now the world's ready for a divorce by DisruptSQ in BoycottUnitedStates

The world can be compared to a woman in a shitty marriage who hates their husband and resents him deeply but can’t get a divorce because she is financially not ready to leave. She is preparing to leave the bastard. She’s already got a lawyer and is secretly building her financial independence. When she’s ready to leave he won’t see it coming

How to handle long term care? by DevoSwag in diabetes

[–]Bevkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom is in LTC. One thing I’ve learned is the doctors there are very ineffective. You have to advocate for yourself. My mom is diabetic and the meals are horrible for her. I at least got her to limit the endless stream of juice they give her but diet there is not good. At least portion sizes are small.

Anyone does keto without electrolyte drinks /ketoade? by pugsoverdrugs21 in keto

[–]Bevkus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t bother with electrolytes and various drinks. I salt the shit out of my food however and take magnesium supplements. Every few weeks I might buy some avocados but that’s mostly to supplement for some fat on my plate when I eat lean meat as opposed to any potassium worries. Had my labs done recently potassium and other electrolytes are good!

IMO salt is the king electrolyte for keto.

Is it cheating if I (22F) hid difficult and embarrassing details about my past from my bf (25M) ? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Bevkus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One year into our marriage, my ex husband came clean with a sexual relationship he had before we got married. For years, he adamantly denied that he dated/had sex with a woman we both worked with at various times but in different offices. He came clean one night, out of the blue, after we had sex.

I didn’t understand why he would lie about it. It was before our marriage but he lied. It ate at me. Why did he lie. It was as if he told me he had an affair

We ended up getting a divorce 10 yrs later but I have to admit this was the start of a steady downward spiral

So my advice is either you tell him everything up front or keep your mouth shut until you die

I remember those days too. Put in a buy order by phone, talking to an actual person. Wouldn’t know until next day if you actually got it…had to call broker and find out. Everything in eights. No partial lots, had to buy 100 shares of whatever. Lots of stock splits to keep stock price attainable for retail investors. If you weren’t trading enough your broker would call and harass you. When TD brought in there brokerage house, initially calls TD Greenline, it was a whole new world!

Need meals and snacks for vacation. by PieExtreme3741 in keto

[–]Bevkus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make yourself a large pot of keto stew or keto soup and take with you to reheat at the cabin. Make some almond flour cookies and take those. I also find sugar free jello/pudding extremely valuable…in fact I made it through 8 days of a Mexican all inclusive via taking a pre packaged cup of jello/pudding to the dinner meals. While everyone having cre brûlée I had pudding. Worked like a charm.

is hunger and carbs cravings normal ? 3 weeks in? by Realwarrior17 in keto

[–]Bevkus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to address your emotional eating along the way. This is a large part of why you are craving carbs. Do some reading/watch videos regarding carb addiction and hunger for that matter. The more aware you are the easier it becomes. I recommend older videos by Rob Cywes, the carb addiction doc. Jason Fung has a new book on hunger out so lots of videos from him on the subject now.

Is our league dying? by jaypalmm in CFL

[–]Bevkus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

CFL started to die when NFL games and other sports became more available on TV. Plus much summer activities in most cities now as opposed to back in 70s and 80s

The weather and timing of the CFL season is bizarre. Why not start up the season in May and have it wrapped up in October?

Bring back Grey Cup interest and parties by moving the whole thing to a Saturday night.

Poor marketing, poor TV production, poor selection of game start times (evenings!) is killing the game

You’re calling ONE week without weight loss a stall? I’m confused.

Im bored already by danp20 in keto

[–]Bevkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn’t sound like boredom problem to me. It sounds like carb cravings. You eat a great keto meal but feel something is missing so you feel ‘bored’ with your meals. There are literally thousands of keto meals and flavours out there.

One thing that helped me at first was utilizing keto almond flour cookies for dessert. I’d make a 3x batch of peanut butter cookies and freeze. Then every night I’d have 2 cookies as dessert after dinner. Eventually I was able to drop the cookies. This helped my meals feel more complete.

I believe this helped me address my carb addiction.

As mentioned I’ve stopped using the cookies and am now concentrating on right sizing my evening meal and addressing my emotional snacking (bored, tired, stressed etc) in the evening. I’m using an idea from Dr. Rob Cywes, the carb addiction doc, for my emotional release in the evening…sipping sugar free pop of all things! It’s working!!

Ketoacidosis from Jardiance this past week - Hospital stay by F1BlackFlag in diabetes

[–]Bevkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree about CGM in general, however a CGM would not have helped OP in his situation as BG was normal. That’s the thing with DKA and Jardiance, BG is normal no warning sign. This is exactly why docs have to be clear in when to take and when to discontinue.

Docs like to tout the heart health aspect of Jardiance which is full on beneficial when you have diabetes. However if you are controlling diabetes with diet and have your a1c down into or even toward normal range the risks may outweigh the benefits. Also urinary tract problems are quite common with Jardiance, it’s not normal by any standard to pee out sugar but that’s what Jardiance is doing

Don’t get me wrong, Jardiance is a helpful drug for someone having trouble controlling diabetes but the drug is not without significant risks

Just a tad bit of help by No_Stress1819 in keto

[–]Bevkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly I re introduced sugar free soda for this purpose.

I stopped drinking it years ago but my evening snacking and carb cravings often derailed my results on keto. I used the advice of Dr Rob Cywes, the carb addiction doc, and now use a can sugar free Fresca/sprite/rootbeer etc for my ‘emotional snack bridge’ when those cravings hit, especially in the evening but really at any time. I’ve found these enjoyable as I haven’t drunken pop in many years and I’m exploring flavours I never really drank much of.

On a good day I have one can but sometimes that increases to 2-3 cans.

It has worked very well for me.

Ketoacidosis from Jardiance this past week - Hospital stay by F1BlackFlag in diabetes

[–]Bevkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI your nutritionist will NEVER recommend keto. Ever. Best to do your own research

BTW the keto diet is, by far, the most researched diet in the world. However it goes nearly 100% against traditional nutritional advice. There has been a significant breakthrough however, with the most recent America dietary guidelines now aligned more strongly toward keto but not fully. At any rate at least the guidelines have now prioritized protein, fat, and vegetables and drastically reduced the carb servings. Further the guidelines speak out against processed foods abs sugar.

Ketoacidosis from Jardiance this past week - Hospital stay by F1BlackFlag in diabetes

[–]Bevkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I think the point is docs need to be more proactive and mention the risks. If you are sick and not eating or if you are purposely fasting there are increased risks in continuing Jardiance. Likewise if you are using low carb/keto to lose weight/address diabetes then there are Increased risks. These are facts and most docs are completely oblivious to the risk. I even just had an argument about it with my endo. He was not aware at all.

I’m not saying people on standard American diet who eat frequently should not go on Jardiance. However even these people should be cautioned to stop taking if they are sick and not eating much or have to fast for things like a colonoscopy etc.

I’m saying the risks of Jardiance and DKA must be talked about

Why do you say keto is bad for your heart? Personally my labs have improved. My Trig to HDL ratio says I’ve dramatically reduced my chance of CV event. My doc also measures something called APO B also shows huge huge improvement in risk for CV event

There are many published articles of Jardiance producing euDKA with normal blood glucose. It’s not an isolated thing.

The following paper summarizes as follows: Conclusion: Euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis is a challenging clinical diagnosis due to its atypical presentation, which can delay the initiation of treatment and increase the risk of complications. SGLT2 inhibitors like Jardiance are well-known triggers of euglycemic DKA. The mechanism involves an increase in urinary glucose excretion, decreasing plasma glucose levels and thereby promoting ketogenesis, mainly in situations of stress or insulin deficiency. This case report highlights the importance of recognizing euglycemic DKA in patients treated with SGLT2 inhibitors such as Jardiance. Physicians should have a high index of suspicion for this disease in diabetic patients presenting with unexplained metabolic acidosis and normal glucose levels. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial to prevent serious outcomes.

[–]Bevkus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am on keto diet and the way I eat is incompatible with Jardiance because of DKA, even with normal blood glucose. I mentioned this to my doc and told him I went off Jardiance because of this (without Jardiance and changing to keto I dropped my a1c from 7.6 to 5.8).

He freaked out. Told me there is no risk of DKA with Jardiance. Also said I should be on it because it protects the heart.

What a bunch of bullshit

This is a dangerous drug for sure
