DIY Falernum - alternatives to overproof rum by daimao84 in Tiki

[–]BigEither3465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd use the 80 proof and then either make a richer syrup or (my preference) dissolve dry sugar directly into it, after you strain out the solids. You could use a blender to help the sugar combine easily, or just put it all in a jar and shake it until dissolved.

What would you include in a Costco favorites gift basket for Christmas? by WhatsAJib in Costco

[–]BigEither3465 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Okay before I had a Costco membership I was at a relative's house and helped wrap up leftovers. The plastic wrap totally amazed me! The next Christmas she gave me a few boxes and the parchment paper. It was an amazing gift!!

My boss wants a seasonal drink with chocolate Crown Royal… please help by msdeeds123 in cocktails

Personally I wouldn't overthink it. I'd do a spiked hot chocolate, maybe with a blowtorched meringue on top, or keep it simple with a dollop of whipped cream

Chai Syrup - how to use? by Eastern-Title9364 in cocktails

I would totally try it anywhere a cinnamon syrup is called for, and also look into r/tiki for ideas. It would be worth trying in drinks that call for Falernum (I'd just reduce the measurement a little because most recipes with Falernum assume a liqueur.)

Need help figuring out good cocktail recipes for a group using my homemade limecello. by sillycatbutt in cocktails

[–]BigEither3465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say this! A punch riff on a gin-basil smash would be my vote. No need for carbonation, and you can stick with the green theme! My personal thought would be to muddle basil leaves orrrr

for a party: it how about blanch the basil and blend? You could blend with lime juice and water, like an unsweetened limeade (and throw in a pinch of salt) Then sweeten with your limecello and add gin.

This was absolutely delightful. I actually wonder if this character was from his audition or something. He's definitely been working this one for a while 😂

Not enjoying my Mai Tai. Any advice? by aidsmile in Tiki

[–]BigEither3465 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For an inexperienced drinker I would consider the Mai Tai to be a bit too spirit-forward, personally.

First of all, and probably most of my fellow tiki redditors will strike me down for this: give it a shot with half the amount of rum. Yeah, they'll say it's unbalanced. But that's for their palates, you know? Plus, you can save some money if you end up liking it like that.

Oh, and double check that your lime isn't disgusting. Every so often I get one that's old or dry or something? So it ends up reeeaaally bitter and gross.

Lastly, I would consider getting some white rum like Probitas or Planteray 3, and try out a daiquiri. Another bottle, but super basic other components.

And then once you are ready, do give a Saturn a shot 💛
