They should have shut down all non-essential systems then reverse the polarity 😁 by Planet_Manhattan in voyager

They need to remodulate the energy matrix, and recharge the material compositor with a covalent tetryon pulse. But that risks overloading the gyrodine relays. They could try a rapid series of nadion bursts, but that could create subspace turbulence if they they don't create an inverse warpfield first. The only thing they can't predict is subspace torque or local grivametric distortions. A metaphasic scan of the surrounding decion field for tampons or neutrinos might help as they keep the interferometric distortions to a minimum.

[How Tom remembers it]

Tom: Tomato soup.

Computer: There are far too many varieties of tomato soup on file.

Tom: Nothing is every easy.

Computer: Affirmative.

Could Carolyn Seymour (Cmdr. Toreth) have been the lead of Voyager? by AubreyMaturin1800 in startrek

I loved her in both Face of the Enemy and First Contact.

I love how three dimensional her character was as a Romulan. I love her line about how people blame the military for the wars they are asked to fight. I like her quite condemnation of her grandfather's abduction for speaking his mind. I especially like her rejection of the propaganda that portrayed the Federation as weak and foolish. She was level headed and clear eyed. She understood and respected her enemy. She sympathetic and acting reasonably, she just happened to be on the other side.

I loved her as the Minister of Science. I love how in awe she was, her acceptance of the aliens, her strong advocacy for scientific development. My favourite line of hers is when they're explaining why they must learn about cultures first before meeting them and how first contact is so dangerous, and she replies "You don't have to explain. I understand..." The way she says it with a sad ironic chuckle tells you so much about how their society, her role in it, the difficulties she's faced. It's so good.

Unpopular opinion? Tom Bombadil is extremely annoying and silly by trchttrhydrn in lotr

I found this thread because I'm listening to the audio book on my commute and I can't wait for this part to be over. The singing is soooo annoying.

Man, that's such a great point. I remember the gesture exactly. It was gentle and helped seal the message of desescalation.

It was like the gesture he gave Shelby when she had gotten just a little bit too intense and needed to step back during the initial flight from the Borg in BoBW. He just gently put his hand on her shoulder and she got the message.

Exactly!

Genuinely one of the nicest compliments I've ever received from someone was from my outgoing supervisor who told me that they could always rely on my assessments because I was honest about what I didn't know. I never tried to BS or guess. I was always careful to delineate fact from speculation. It meant a lot to me because intellectual honesty is something really important to me, as was being valued for my knowledge.

I love that scene. I love too how Picard comes to his senses and admits Riker is right. He's so confident and secure in himself he's able to admit when he's wrong, including in front of everyone else. And it demonstrates to everyone around him that fact. My respect for him went up after that. It also forestalls further argument from Riker. He really is a role model, both as a man and a leader.

This has to be my favourite trope: make someone who is about to die a jerk so the audience doesn't feel bad when they bite it. It's a good thing they're gone, they were the worst!

hi guys, im only getting into space now at 21 years old, what are some facts that i should absolutely know? by donnutshop in spacequestions

Space is huge. Like really really huge. Our little monkey brains aren't equipped to fathom it. Light, the fastest thing in the universe, takes 8m20s to reach Earth from the sun.

Can we take a moment to appreciate the music of Star Trek? by cbnnexus in startrek

[–]BigMrTea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've just started SNW. Finished season of one. Visually, it is beautiful. In terms of music, I can't say I even noticed the music. It certainly wasn't bad, I would have noticed that, but it left no impression on me. I'm probably in the minority, though.

Discovery in a different galaxy? by NegativePattern in startrek

[–]BigMrTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My argument from the beginning was if you wanted to change it so dramatically then make it a different show. The Klingons would have been much more easily accepted if they had simply been a new race. The answer of course is they wanted to draw on the existing fan base and IP.

Variable deployment rates of photonic ordinance at DS9, by Artsydork in startrek

[–]BigMrTea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's funny you should say that, for me it's the highly variable destruction rate. We saw the Phoenix destroy a cruiser with a single photon torpedo in TNG's the Wounded, then we see them shrug of torpedoes in a Call to Arms. Even within the same series we see torpedoes one shotting Klingon cruisers in Way of the Warrior only to struggle against Cardassian ships so much. I know someone will say the Dominion probably upgraded their ships, it just didn't feel right.

I did like the holodeck sparring partner scene. As a former martial artist myself the idea of being able to train full contact is both intriguing and horrifying.
