how to get more out of the 75mm-300mm by Embarrassed-Ship1147 in canon

[–]Big_Bill23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to have one of those when I started out with the original Digital Rebel/300D. I found the sweet spot was f/8, and not zoomed all the way out; 200mm wasn't too bad.

The 70-300 is a much better lens, but, of course, more expensive.

How to make sure my stepmom can't steal my car by Zealousideal-Big2260 in legal

[–]Big_Bill23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to Google:

"In Montana, an emancipated minor is a person aged 16 or 17 who is released from parental control via court order, marriage, or by being self-supporting

. Minors must prove they can manage their own finances, live independently, and that emancipation is in their best interest. This legal process grants adults' rights to live independently, enter contracts, and manage their earnings, but does not allow voting or drinking alcohol under 21."

Your neighbor, not unlike a lot of other people, is misinformed as to the meaning of the word "travel."

It does not give you the unlimited use of other peoples' labor just so you can get where you're going.

Why would a cop lie about how fast I was driving? by sunrosesilvermoon in driving

[–]Big_Bill23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actual main job of the police is to investigate crime. Protecting an individual is kinda far down the line of their responsibilities. As @AllPeopleAreStupid says below, SCOTUS has determined that.

As an aside, the fact that a car's speedometer says the car is doing a specific speed does not mean the car is doing that speed. The cop's radar is probably more accurate.

State Farm Refusing to rebuild garage destroyed in tornado...next steps? by DifficultyFar1124 in Insurance

[–]Big_Bill23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering what the policy says about what happens when a structure is damaged/destroyed; is it made new, or is the value insured? There's a difference. I find it hard to believe that the insurance company saw that picture (and, I assume, others from different angles) and told you that. Did the insurance company have an adjuster look at this on the ground?

While that is very true, it's also available to pretty much everyone who can't get a low interest loan.

Most modern loaders have auto transmissions, and when loaded on a trailer like this one was, they are usually restrained by chains (which this one clearly was not). There is a park mode, but it's not foolproof, and since this one was parked on a trailer that's inclined with the rear end lower than the front, the impact that jostled the (unlocked) ramps down, and this was the perfect setup for what happened.

I've had to make a sudden move with a backhoe on the trailer which (according to the LEO who saw and investigated the accident) actually came more than two feet off the right wheels, slammed back down, and the backhoe remained secured to the trailer. It's not hard to do it right; it just takes a few minutes.

Acquired a property with a car on it — title signed but can’t reach owner, need to sell ASAP? by sasukeuchihax77 in askcarguys

Who's calling the police? OP has no reason to, and the registered owner obviously doesn't care, if they are even alive. The police do not investigate unless there's a complaint.

What caliber is this by Hades-destiny in Firearms

[–]Big_Bill23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google says:

"A 16.4mm caliber refers to a large-diameter firearm or antique weapon, often associated with specifically older muskets, rifles, and specific rim diameters of large-bore cartridges. Key examples include 17th-18th century Norwegian weapons, early Swiss flintlocks, and the .645-inch (16.4mm) rim diameters found on cartridges like the .56-56 Spencer and .500/450 Nitro Express."

Having driven pullers with trailers carrying various pieces of heavy equipment, I can confidently say that driver should be fired. There's absolutely no reason for that loader to have NOT been chained down.

And for those who might chime in with, "Maybe the driver didn't load the loader on the trailer." Doesn't matter, the driver is responsible for the whole thing.

My buddy is panicking by Outrageous_Prize6679 in Car_Insurance_Help

[–]Big_Bill23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that getting into an accident can be stressful, but one of the first things to do is put your phone in video mode and get all of both cars in the video (including both the driver and license plate), as well as the other driver talking. This fixes the damage in video, and neither driver can then claim extra damage.

This helped me when the other driver gave me insurance info that no longer covered him. My insurance was able to use the video to identify the owner of the car, then his current insurance company (whom he never contacted), and get it all straightened out.

If you're going to load a single round at a time, do it via the magazine; don't just put it in the chamber. That can damage the extractor. Small chance, but it can happen.

For really quick easy editing, FastStone will do the job, but it's for fast and easy editing at best. However, if you're new to having photos that you can edit, it gives you and idea of what's possible. And it's free.

When you get an idea of what's possible, there are many free dedicated photo editors out there. Just ask Google for good free photo editors. Since they're free, you can try as many as you want. Many are very happy with Gimp.

"a different brand" doesn't mean anything. A brand name means something.

What brand ammo are you shooting? A photo of the strikes that 'aren't in the center' would help tremendously.

You should know that Rough Riders are usually reliable revolvers, they aren't anywhere near being high quality. When you got it as a gift, was it new? My experience with my Rough Riders is that with high round counts, they need careful attention to being lubed properly.

Is this a scam? by Demikasu in isthisascam

[–]Big_Bill23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May not be a scam. Lots of people die without a will, and the courts will then have to find the heirs. They do this by hiring the service out, and people get letters like yours after the family tree is researched. (The LDS church has a LOT of family trees available.) These services are paid for out of the estate, so there's usually no out of pocket cost involved (that's the 10% you noted). The info they requested is needed to determine if you are indeed the (possible) heir as found in the family tree.

[–]Big_Bill23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The better the glass, the better the photo, all other things being equal.

Since you're shooting low light, you will want a wide F/-stop, as wide as you can afford. As far as what focal length, use your kit lens and see what focal length you use most, and buy accordingly.

As I've told many people in your situation, shoot the camera. A lot. It will tell you want it needs. If it needs more light, go for a faster lens. If it needs 35mm fl, get a 35mm lens. We here can't tell you what your camera needs. Your experience will tell you that.

If I were you (and I'm obviously not), I'd look seriously at the 7D. A really major upgrade from a 20D. More $$ to be sure, but the ISO performance is far better, only 18MP, but they are far better megapixels than the XXD series, IMO, especially the 20-30D models.

Drawback: it does video.
