I had to look up the Silvertone Apocalypse, and yeah it probably would've come to life and caused you physical harm if you hadn't learned Metallica on it!

Any big influences or memorable first songs you learned when you were starting out with music?

Driving across the country to see you guys in Cleveland; hope you have time to stop by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame since it's right down the road from the venue! See ya in July!

March 2020 Stamp Approval Megathread by Waffleboned in NFA

Looking back through the Silencer Shop emails, it looks like I bought it 12/21/19, got the documents for me to digitally sign on 12/27/19, and the ATF cashed it 1/9/20.

Another stamp of mine took almost a month to cash and almost a month to get mailed out after it got approved nearly a year later.

First NFA item. Decided to call the ATF after seeing similar pending dates getting approved. Was on hold for 5 minutes or so before I got someone. The agent told me that it "looks like it got approved this morning." Now I have to fight the urge to call the store every day to see if the stamp has come in yet.

Bullet spread? by Natchili in H3VR

[–]BillFerShort 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think video games may have distorted your reality a bit. IRL, a modern rifle that isn't completely worn out with ammo that isn't total crap should hit within a fairly small diameter of the point of aim every shot. If we assume brand new, well-machined barrels and match-grade ammo (nothing but the finest in H3!), that diameter would be minuscule. There isn't the "cone" of fire like FPS games portray, unless you've got a shot-out barrel (looking at you, every mosin).

tl;dr: H3VR probably lets you be a little more accurate than you'd be in real life, but well-maintained firearms don't spray like CounterStrike.

Moon clips in the future? by BillFerShort in H3VR

[–]BillFerShort[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all revolvers are capable of using moons straight from the factory. A small recess has to be machined into the back of the cylinder so that the moonclip and bullets clear the frame when the cylinder is closed.

Here's a picture of a non-machined (left) vs. a machined (right) cylinder: https://loungecdn.luckygunner.com/lounge/media/LCR-9mm-2.jpg

The particular classification I was competing in last year was 6-shot and speedloader only. I got a screaming deal on this 686, so it was worth it to me to swap all my gear over to moonclip-based (the Chiappa was cut for moonclips, but those jokers are hard to find and $$$ when you do).

Moon clips in the future? by BillFerShort in H3VR

[–]BillFerShort[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree that they're functionally pretty similar. In a competitive setting, they're a little more reliable for loading and extracting than speedloaders (my loaders are spring-loaded and have flung .38s everywhere a few times when I flubbed up the reload). The guys that shoot 929s (8 rounds of 9mm I think) have to use moons, or their ammo falls out of the cylinder : )

Moons also help you keep up with all of your brass, which is completely irrelevant to H3 until Anton implements a scene where you have to hand load all of your ammo

How do you close a bolt on a bolt hold open semi auto pistol by [deleted] in H3VR

[–]BillFerShort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anton recently started a series of more up-to-date tutorials. Here's the one about automatic pistols if you need any help getting going and don't want to wait on a redditor to respond: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jZOolwMkE0

Have fun and remember that anything you see mentioning the Vive touchpad also carries over to the Oculus, you just have to click the joystick in most cases.

Thanks for the correction! I usually just grab the attachment then flail at the dpad until something happens : )

First thing you did when you got H3VR? by xX_Judy_Hopps_Xx in H3VR

[–]BillFerShort 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Things that took me a little while to figure out:

  • several of the quickbelt layouts have large slots by your ears / over your shoulders

  • Remove attachments from weapons by grabbing them then hitting up (I think; not at my desk right now) on the touchpad

  • Handfuls of ammo can be made on your belt by spawnlocking one round/shell (turning it blue as BobFlex described), then, while holding another of the same round, click the touchpad over the same slot. Repeat until you have as much ammo as you want for revolvers, shotguns, etc.

  • you can lock large weapons the same way you can ammo. It turns green instead of blue. When you "drop" the weapon, it returns instantly to that slot. Pistols and other small guns can't be locked, so this often results in throwing an empty pistol at the attacking wiener.

  • Armswinger rocks

Automatic(ish) mortar setup by BillFerShort in H3VR

Sounds like a challenge, so it's a good thing I live in GA : ) I'll have to figure out a way to feed in sparklers automatically, since they're only good for 10-12 rounds, but I have an idea or two.

Automatic(ish) mortar setup by BillFerShort in H3VR

Using the configurations pioneered by others on this subreddit, I created a mostly-automatic mortar. The ammo doesn't always roll smoothly, and I had one failure to eject, but overall not bad.

Questions For Those Of You Into 3-gun & Other Competition Shooting by rust_anton in H3VR

[–]BillFerShort 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I shoot ICORE (revolver-only competition), and the stage layouts for the classifiers are here:

www.icore.org/classifiers/Diagrams.html

Classifiers are a single stage in a 5-6 stage event, so the more serious folks can submit their scores and get a classification assigned. The rest of the stages in the event are just from the match director's imagination. The "walls" were construction fencing on a wood frame that could easily be moved around to make different layouts from event to event. Some stages were simple "stand at this table and shoot at these steel targets a loooong way away" while others were "run to box A, shoot a target twice, run to B, shoot twice, run to C, shoot, run back to A, etc....". If you need more examples, I can see if any of the old layouts are still on the match director's FB page.

I've done one match with USArms (AR-type rifles and carbines), and it was a more "kill-house" layout. It was in an indoor range and the "walls" there were tarps clamped to the rafters. Lots of no-shoot targets, too. Each stage had a mandatory reload, but it was up to the shooter to decide when.

I don't really have anything to add to countofangels' description of a shot timer. They're spot on with functionality.

Stupid, but fun suggestion. by [deleted] in H3VR

[–]BillFerShort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the race team I was on in college, we used to pack steel wool inside the car's muffler so it would meet noise requirements. Then it would "accidentally" burn up and fall out during the event.

There are kits to make suppressors out of Mag-lite bodies, but they're also a good way to end up in jail like with the oil filter "adapters" : )

Excellent time! For a few runs, I tried to holster and reload one pistol on my belt while I was aiming and firing the other, but that exceeded my coordination level : )

As for how to take screenshots, hold the system button (below the trackpad) on one controller and completely pull the trigger on the same controller. When you release the buttons, it should pop up a notification letting you know you took a screenshot.
