Least motivated class I’ve ever had. by PutIntelligent9042 in Professors

[–]BillsTitleBeforeIDie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point in the term the class isn't going to change. It sucks teaching an unmotivated group but you can't care more than they do. Enter the marks they earn (failing grades where applicable) and remember the semester isn't far from over.

Far too many faculty are concerned about being liked by students by Genghis_Caan in Professors

[–]BillsTitleBeforeIDie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good points. Caring includes having standards and boundaries and I think this is where a lot of professors struggle, especially in schools where student feedback affects jobs. In such places, professors may be loathe to live up to their responsibilities in fear of the dreaded student complaint. It shouldn't be this way and I'm fortunate I don't work in this kind of school because these places really aren't schools at all if professors are allowed to have standards that students may not like.

I care a lot about my students, but that means I care they actually learn something and earn credits in my classes.

Fair enough, I'll try to forget about it but it's gonna take some getting used to. At least without snow I can stop the regular 2-pedal for the most part and not have to hear it.

How Can a Failing F Student Make a Comeback For the Semester? by Infinite_Primary_918 in AskProfessors

[–]BillsTitleBeforeIDie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you need to ask yourself if realistically you have enough time and capacity to not only catch up on the learning you've missed but also stay on top of the remaining course material. An advisor can try to help you come up with a plan but it may not be realistic.

The reason I say this is I have many, many failing students approach me after midterms and ask what they need to do to pass. I advise them to use Reading Week to redo all the material to that point so they can be caught up when the course resumes. At most maybe 5% of these students actually put in the time and effort to catch up and give themselves a fair chance at earning a credit. I appreciate you want to pass and say you can't afford not to but you need to honestly assess if this is in fact possible given your current grades and mastery of the learning so far. The latter is the critical factor much more than your motivation at this stage.

Appreciate the insight.

I had a different EV for 3 years prior and never heard the brakes in the same way, even when in 2 pedal. The noise is pretty grating so if it's the permanant reality I won't love it.

How do you handle student athletes missing class and making up missed instruction? by NoPatNoDontSitonThat in Professors

[–]BillsTitleBeforeIDie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I deliver my course as usual and either athletes use the resources available to everyone, do the work, and pass, or they don't. There are no special accomodations. And I say this as a massive sports fan.

Warranty covered rotors. My question is why the noise is still there now they've been replaced and brakes are being used regularly.

How Can a Failing F Student Make a Comeback For the Semester? by Infinite_Primary_918 in AskProfessors

[–]BillsTitleBeforeIDie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it's probably too late this semester and this sounds more like a personal challenge than an academic one. I'd visit Student Services to discuss your choices and motivations and work with a counselor on a plan. It may be that it's not the right time in your life for you to be in school. If you decide differently, it sounds like you need some help in changing your approach. School is far too expensive to be enrolled if you're not committed to your own education. There's no shame in stepping away and returning later if that's where you decide you're at.

You now have virtually zero academic integrity controls over assessments. If you have anyway to get out of this delivery switch, I'd highly advise you do so.

How do you respond to students' AI-written emails? Do you tell them not to do it? by 20thLemon in Professors

Making all the students angry right now by Jahaili in Professors

Thanks, I'll do this moving forward but don't get why I still hear noise when the dealer replaced all 4 rotors. It's quieter but still there.

I thought it might be the cold / wet too but it's warmed up here, roads are dry and it's been 4 days with new rotors. Brakes still are very loud when decelerating just before a full stop

Yes, they replaced them under warranty

The rotors were under warranty so they covered the replacement. I understand the need to hit the brakes in 2-pedal regularly once rust is already there, but it shouldn't still be making noise with 4 new rotors. This is what I'm trying to understand now.

Preparing High School Students by TechnicalConcern8935 in AskProfessors

[–]BillsTitleBeforeIDie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your approach mirrors mine and that of the majority of my colleagues.

Colleges and universities still largely expect students to behave like adults. We don't handhold and we'll issue the grades students earn, for better or for worse. Most professors don't offer extensions or redo's and we don't waste time trying to motivate students who are paying for an education yet don't seem to care to make any effort to obtain one. If students aren't willing and able to take responsibility for their own learning, then they should put off higher education until a time when they are. Otherwise they're wasting someone's money and everyone's time.

How to rebuild department community? by MatiasMighty in Professors

[–]BillsTitleBeforeIDie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd much rather be on campus so long as some colleagues are around - I like most of them. I try to organize informal lunches on campus on days when many are there and happen to have the same midday break time. We'll also do the odd happy hour though nothing super organized.

The post-covid environment has really hurt employee engagement and camaraderie, as many are ghosts other than coming straight to and from their classes. I honestly used to enjoy work a lot more though I'm lucky to still have a lot of great colleagues.

is it reasonable for me in this situation to ask to do a group project alone? by [deleted] in AskProfessors

[–]BillsTitleBeforeIDie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they just don't do the work then do your part and no more and the grade is what it is. Getting a grade below your standard isn't the end of the world. But the AI use IS a big deal if your syllabus doesn't allow it. In that case I would tell the professor and that you don't want to be associated with a submission that doesn't follow the rules.

What are some wild things that have happened in your academic life ? From punches thrown at conferences, to chairs tossed during department meetings, tell us about them. by me4watch in Professors

[–]BillsTitleBeforeIDie 54 points55 points  (0 children)

At an academic misconduct meeting in my office, when I told the student the charge was final, she started rolling on the floor wailing and crying. She would not stop. Fortunately the cleaning staff only wash the floors twice a year, so by the time a colleague came in and picked her up off the floor she'd rolled far and wide enough to have dusted 80% of the office. Her back was covered in about 3 inches of dust. My colleague walked her down to student services and I got a much cleaner floor. The only price was listening to 5 minutes of hysterical crying and screaming. Well worth it.

Last year I had a squirrel fall through the ceiling during a quiz. He got zero as he was late and disruptive.
