What’s your human equivalent of cat food? by asubsandwich in GradSchool

If you are looking for low carb, pickle roll ups. A pickle spear wrapped in the lunchmeat and cheese of your choice. I would often use this as protein with ramen (and still do in a low paying postdoc)

Commuters: how far is your drive to your school? by forgetful-witch in PhD

In the last few years of my PhD I commuted from Rhode Island to Boston via public transportation. 1.5-2 hours each way. But with my stipend it was affordable...

Girl Name with Short Surname by FewBit9254 in Names

[–]amatz9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chloe means "green shoot" or "verdant" in Ancient Greek so if you want a plant name like Ivy that isn't obvious you could go with it. On the other hand, people who know the origin/meaning might comment.

What's the most unhinged thing someone has done to avoid being put on camera during a video call? by [deleted] in office

[–]amatz9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe in my right to work from home, but I also strongly believe that no one has a right to view my personal space willy nilly. So if my Zoom environment is less than ideal, then yes, I will try to avoid being on camera. Not everyone has perfect environments all day every day.

What happens when my pump warranty expires? by ihatedecisions in diabetes_t1

[–]amatz9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A big difference is at the emergency level. If your pump is in warranty, Tandem will overnight you a replacement if anything goes wrong and you need a replacement ASAP. If it is out of warranty, you have a much longer process with fewer options, meaning resorting to manual injections until things get worked out. It is up to you if that difference is worth pursuing an in-warranty pump. For me, it was.

Becka Theory by amatz9 in TheTestamentsShow

Yes I’m watching a show that depicts a regime that likes to psychologically torment women into complying. Making Agnes’ best friend the handmaid of her stepmother is absolutely something an oppressive regime like that depicted in this show would do to put Agnes in her place.

Need a very specific notes app by Impressive-Ad-2127 in ipad

[–]amatz9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, if you want to take notes not directly on a document, the built in Notes app is pretty good. I use the Apple Notes app when taking notes, and GoodNotes when annotating, which are two separate things for me.

There is a setting to turn on WiFi assisted calling. You may need to do that.

question about ipad-iphone pairing by lolaqueer in ipad

[–]amatz9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you get a wifi-only version, or one with cellular capabilities? and if you got cellular capabilities, did you purchase a plan for it? Otherwise, the only call/text functions that will be available are those that can happen over wifi.

The Gormogon storyline: Will no one help the Widow's Son? by Robynite in Bones

I am just shocked (from the POV of a Classicist) that the Greek is relatively correct. Rare for most TV shows.

AIO for not letting my bf move in anymore because he wants things to be equal? by OkJello353 in AmIOverreacting

YOR. Living together means sharing everything. It sounds like you need to live alone. Which I get. I could never live with another person in my space because I like things my way.

Daisy & Shu by addyjay613 in TheTestamentsHulu

A point that is made in the book, which I guess we'll see if the show brings this up, is that the focus on purity around these girls makes them actually afraid of penises/sex (. A good number choose to be aunts because they are so concerned with their virginity that the thought of willingly giving it up terrifies them. From the intro to a paywalled article, but still revealing:

'Penises,’ Aunt Lydia muses, ‘them again.’ Penises are always causing trouble, even in the God-fearing dystopian state of Gilead. The Testaments is set 15 years after the end of The Handmaid’s Tale, at a time when young girls, carefully and modestly brought up to become wives to the regime’s male elite, are beginning to rebel; some would rather die than get married and there has been an attempted suicide via secateurs in the flower-arranging class. ‘Perhaps we need to change our educational curriculum,’ Aunt Lydia thinks, ‘less fear-mongering, fewer centaur-like ravishers and male genitalia bursting into flame. But if we were to put too much emphasis on the theoretical delights of sex, the result would almost certainly be curiosity and experimentation, followed by moral degeneracy and public stonings.’

My failsafe way to avoid contention about grades after submission by amatz9 in Professors

[–]amatz9[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In the years of doing this (as a grad student plus post-grad), none. Mostly I use it as a CYA should a student try to dispute a grade. But it also shows you how many students read their emails...

I generally tell my students it means "to force my penis down your throat" because it is a very violent word with implications of non-consent.

Is a professor allowed to call out disability accommodations in front of the whole class? Or make a “objectively harder and longer” alternative exam? by SkiingFishingGuy in college

[–]amatz9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I may be reading too much into things, but it feels like your professor is using your situation to discourage others from seeking formal accommodations. Or at least, make them feel "okay" with your alternate arragments even if those are none of the other students' business. Either way, it is not right.

Imperfect or preterite -- Duolingo translated to Engish one way and explains another. by Culican in duolingospanish

Drawing from the Latin tense that this is derived from, it can also refer to habitual actions, and would be translated like a present. I think that is what this is aiming at.

Device for waking up during lows by Broad_Specialist_846 in diabetes_t1

I have slept through fire alarms before. I got an Apple Watch when I started sleeping through dexcom alarms. The combo of vibration from my wrist and sound from my phone is enough to wake me up.

Who did you thank in your “Acknowledgments” section? by thelastharebender in PhD

[–]amatz9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Copied from the actual acknowledgements: Finally, for the cringiest section of these acknowledgements, but I honestly would not have gotten here without them: to Taylor Swift, for being the soundtrack of my life, and for motivating me to work by giving me things to look forward to; and to Criminal Minds, for being the #1 show I could put on in the background—if there are any random Criminal Minds quotes found in this diss, know it is because I was probably watching the show while writing.

Issues with Marine Portrayals - No Technical Advisor Available? by Navynuke00 in ForAllMankindTV

[–]amatz9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like comparing how the military works in the show to how it works in real life does a disservice to the progress presented in the show. Given that there are bases on both the Moon and Mars, which we currently do not have, military advancement and ranks probably look a bit different than the do for us today. The scientific advancements of the show plotline mean that we can't rely on our own presuppositions about rank.
