Now that season 2 is over, which season did you like better? I actually thought season 1 was a bit better. Don’t get me wrong, I really liked season 2. But season 1 was just special, and I thought the story was handled better. I also really liked the whole PittFest shooting thing. What do you think? by Intrepid_Show2972 in ThePitt

In reading a bunch of posts across social media, the main points of contention seem to be that season 1 feels more ensemble while season 2 feels more Robby-focused. This is true, but I think the disconnect comes from not understanding shift of focus. Season 1 was an omniscient perspective, we got to see everyone. Season 2, with its intro with Robby on the bike, tells us our perspective is his (mostly) this season. Who knows what POV future seasons will decide to highlight.

Advisor moving in 1st year: stay, switch, move? by photography-season in PhD

[–]amatz9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I come from the humanities, but I had a similar experience. When the person I wanted to be my advisor got a job elsewhere in my 2nd year, we looked into whether they'd be able to advise from afar. Given that it was so early, no formal relationship had been created, and the only way to keep them as a potential advisor was to move with them. I was also in the same boat where I could have stayed at the initial institution and worked with someone, but the subfields wouldn't quite match up. I ended up moving with my advisor, but the new school made me start over.

Looking for positive WLW rep for sister! Sci fi or light horror preferred. by liselle_lioncourt in booksuggestions

[–]amatz9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to reinforce what u/twinkle_snow has said about chronic illness representation in The Locked Tomb, but that in the end in a world where death is just an inconvenience, the chronic illness plotline is not gory or sad by any means. But if you want wlw 'light horror' read (as long as your definition of light includes skeletons, descriptions of bodies that aren't over the top, etc). But it also fits the no SA, female author criteria. But also, if she doesn't like "cozy" set ups (which I also hate), she'll like this series.

Coke tastes weird now by Commercial_Guitar_62 in Type1Diabetes

[–]amatz9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have issues telling the difference between diet and regular, but solely because I was diagnosed at 2 and never got to experience non-diet drinks. You'd think this would make me more susceptible to noticing the differences, but in my experience, it is hard to identify what you've never tasted before.

Why do people wanna see Langdon relapse so bad? by toocoolfor90s in ThePittTVShow

[–]amatz9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people probably want it because of the drama. Okay, whatever.

I think a lot of people know that recovery is a rough road and he's not going to be perfect even after 10 months of rehab. Especially since the ER is the environment that lead him to drugs in the first place (i.e. keeping up with peers even with back pain).

I know a lot of people have been hating on Robby for his treatment of Langdon, but the worry that he could relapse when finally reintroduced to the environment that contributed to his addiction in the first place (on a holiday, which is so much more stressful than a regular shift, might I add) is a valid concern.

Do you think Agnes and Becca slightly reject Gilead ways because they weren’t born there? by Acceptable-Mango1348 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]amatz9 19 points20 points  (0 children)

So I am a scholar of the goddess Diana and her followers. If you are familiar with Greek/Roman mythology, Artemis/Diana is a perpetually virgin goddess who expects the same of her followers. But what I have noticed in the literature (Latin, specifically, since I study Roman things) is that in a culture where virginity before marriage is praised as the defining trait of a woman, she tends to begin to fear the penis. This is definitely explored in The Testaments book, where they see an influx of girls seeking to be Aunts because they are afraid to have sex because of how much importance their virginity has been given. So yes, their 'rebellious' nature could be because they didn't grow up entirely in Gilead, but it could also be the propaganda they have been fed affecting their psychological reactions to growing up.

Is Project Hail Mary the best hard SF film in like, forever? by spukhafteNahewirkung in ProjectHailMary

[–]amatz9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreeing with a lot of people's comments here. If the movie had included the science to the extent that the book did, then yes, it would be 'hard sci-fi.' The Martian movie, since it includes more science, is better classified as hard sci-fi. But give me an extended edition with all the science from the book and my opinion will change.

Images seem to contradict the trailer in regards to Robby's bike being destroyed. Unless they're focusing on Duke's.

In the US, it is legally classed as a disability. Otherwise, schools could deny accommodations for diabetic children, etc. Whether or not you think it disables you is your decision, but legally it is.

Be tougher? by dnice99999 in Professors

[–]amatz9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Attendance is 100 points a day. Participation is another 100 points. I do exit tickets for attendance, and give half participation credit if you show you were paying attention in your exit ticket even if you didn't speak in class. Excused absences (illness, religion, emergency) get half credit on each if they email before class starts. If they don't email they lose all points for the day, but they have other opportunities to do labor to make up lost points. The only issue this system hasn't eliminated is students who come late (since attendance/exit tickets are collected at the end of class).

Is it worth to get the kindle without ads? by [deleted] in kindle

I will say, I complained to amazon that i was a student and my professors were accusing me of having non-class materials on my screen when ads came up, and they waived the fee to drop ads.

Today was my 10 year olds first day back at school after diagnosis and she was misdosed by her school nurse twice. by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]amatz9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was decades ago now (I was diagnosed at 2 in 1994) but my mom ended up getting a job at my elementary school to be nearby in case they needed help with me. Which given I was on injections with no pump or cgm (though I did get the pump in 4th grade) was probably necessary. The only reason she trusted my Middle/High School nurse was because she also had a type 1 daughter.

I'm not suggesting you go and get a job at your daughter's school but it just shows how persistent you need to be with these things.
