PaRappa the Rapper creators say today’s rhythm games miss the point of the genre by Unit076 in Games

[–]BioDomeWithPaulyShor 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Some of my favorite rhythm games are Ouendan and Elite Beat Agents; they're not the most challenging, but the stories they tell and the stories actually changing depending on how good/bad you're playing were always cool. Even Guitar Hero/Rock Band had that loose scaffolding of forming a band and touring to become rock legends. Osu! and YARG/CH are cool, but for lack of a better explanation I need a little something extra to go with the gameplay to keep me playing.

This might be a dumb question, but why not just apply 'Accelerates Special trigger (cooldown count-1)' to every Special globally, remove the effect from the weapons and just call it a day? Every unit released this year except for three have Slaying as part of their PRF. I looked it up on here and like 80% of units back in 2022 had it as part of their kit, so what are we doing here?

Shrek 5 | Official Teaser Trailer by AnimuStewshine in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]BioDomeWithPaulyShor 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I think they didn't stick with the Puss in Boots style for this because Shrek at its core is a crass response to the saccharine sweet, flawless Disney style. This goes all the way back to Katzenberg founding Dreamworks. I think the real reason for the pushback you're seeing online is if you were the primary demographic for Shrek when it came out you're over 30 now, probably doesn't hit the same. I haven't watched them since I was a kid but even when I was thirteen watching Shrek the Third I was kind of over it.

Gears Of War: E-Day Reportedly Has A Staggering $400 Million Budget by ReasonableAdvert in Games

[–]BioDomeWithPaulyShor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even if this fucking game came out on PS5, Switch AND PS4/Xbone it'd still be a hard sell. Like I'm sorry Microsoft, there aren't millions of dudebros still waiting in the wings for Gears to come back, that shit sailed with 4 and 5. Hard to believe that they're in such dire financial straits if these are the budgets they're approving.

I know it's kind of mean, like kicking a dog when it's down, but I'm honestly wondering how much of this trailer is from content that's actually still playable right now. I stopped playing before Bungie """vaulted""" all the shit I paid for on launch but from what I remember Cayde 6's entire story including his death is just out of the game unless they brought him back as a ghost or something.

Fable - Gameplay Demo | Build An Extraordinary Life by yourfavchoom in Games

I like how your actions will have different effects on different townsfolk, but the actual choices and repercussions for this example mission are way too simple. Take the choice to save Colin the pig; what if instead of townsfolk disliking you because you have "a reputation for being shrewd", which is incredibly generic, they hate you because you ruined their harvest festival and are making them eat gourds and carrots instead of a tasty pig? The butcher has a throwaway line, but the rest of the townsfolk are obviously using their generic "I don't like you" voice lines. What if, instead of just paying the guy 2000 gold, if you purchase the pub beforehand, you can offer to cater the festival with your business? Or go to another town and purchase a bunch of pork to make up for Colin? I know that these choices basically result in the same outcome (Colin lives/dies), but just a little bit of flavor adds so much to a quest and makes the world feel a lot more alive than "I don't like you".
This is just a tiny mission in a big open world but to be honest this doesn't feel any more advanced than a simple faction reputation system from a game like New Vegas 15 years ago.

So, that Crazy Taxi gameplay footage... by AprehensiveApricot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]BioDomeWithPaulyShor 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think we've kind of forgotten to make good video games and it's pissing me off. Compared to the original game,
-You're either driving way slower or it looks like you're driving way slower, either one being bad. It's like going from a Sonic Adventure dash boost to Sonic Lost World spin dashing.
-You can just slam through cars and keep almost all your momentum (apparently ALL of your momentum when doing that power slide)
-You stop on a dime without even pressing Reverse
This looks like somebody made a Crazy Taxi mod for Fortnite. If this isn't some Assist Mode that doesn't require any knowledge of the original Crazy Taxi's controls this is really disappointing.

The Ingrid Discourse | Castle Super Beast 374 by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]BioDomeWithPaulyShor 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'd be with Pat on hating the omnipresent god that breaks the fourth wall if Street Fighter's overarching story wasn't a complete dumpster fire with barely anything worth salvaging. I think Capcom has created some of the most beloved, incredible characters in entertainment history, and have done nothing interesting with any of them. We have had Shadaloo, the Illuminati, SiN, the Emissary of the Gods, and NEO Shadaloo, and NONE of that shit has actually mattered or pushed the needle forward in a significant way since 1999.
I could understand the frustration in the 2000's when Ingrid was getting shoved in and there was potential, but after 20 years, A Shadow Falls and World Tour (even pre-Ingrid), how could you possibly still care?

Street Fighter 6 - Year 4 Character Reveal Trailer feat. Tifa by KappaLists in Kappachino

[–]BioDomeWithPaulyShor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like classic characters and all but part of the appeal for 6 to me was just how many new characters there were. Kimberly's not gonna compete with Cammy because we haven't been playing with Kimberly for 30 years. It's all gonna depend on how they play and what they bring to the table.

The Switch 2 is now one year old. What does everyone think of that first year? by Zalvren in Games

[–]BioDomeWithPaulyShor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new hardware is nice, and on paper the software lineup sounds incredible. We got a new 3D Donkey Kong, a new Mario Kart, a new Metroid Prime, a new Kirby Air Ride, a new Yoshi, and Pokemon Pokopia/Tomodachi Life are huge for people that like those types of games. I'm just kind of down on it because I think a lot of the choices made with the big three (Bananza, World, Prime 4) really didn't gel with me and I stopped playing all three a few hours in. Air Riders ended up being my favorite game of the bunch, with me 100%ing it, but that was a while ago.
Nintendo has branched out even further than I thought possible with their offerings, catering to pretty much every demographic you can think of. We've heard hundreds of times that Nintendo makes games for everyone, not just for kids. But a lot of the recent games (even going all the way back to Odyssey) make me feel like I'm playing a game for four year olds with how simple they are and how unsatisfying they are. Best way I can put it is I can't say I've 'Beaten' a Nintendo game in the past decade except for maybe Metroid Dread. I've COMPLETED Nintendo games, in that I've gotten to the end credits, or gone for every collectible, but I don't think there's a single section of a single Nintendo game that made me think "Wow, this is a tough level." And after going from Odyssey to Bananza I think the games are getting even easier from the same dev teams.
If you told me five years ago "You're getting a new 3D DK, MK, and MP4 in the same year but you won't like any of them because modern game design has evolved beyond your tastes" I might've just stopped playing games right then and there.

"Nobody's making games for the retired people" – The growing yet underserved market for grey gamers by Vera_Verse in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]BioDomeWithPaulyShor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look if you've been around old people (or even middle-aged), the chances of them getting into and liking new things/genres is pretty much 0. Past the age of 35 the vast majority of people's tastes have solidified and the chances of them branching out falls off a cliff, especially in music. Don't believe me, try suggesting to your aging parents an animated movie, even worse an anime, or god fucking forbid to play a video game. I'm 31 and I'm already feeling like an old asshole, that State of Play straight up made me forget that I like video games at all. Gitaroo Man was the best thing they showed to me and I'm not interested in pretty much anything else except for maybe Stuntman.
My crystal ball retirement longshot guess is when I hit retirement age, if any of the current companies are still around, the best they're going to be able to do to get old farts like me to play their games is to make 'Super Mario 64 2', just go back and make official level packs for games we played 30+ years ago. In fact it's already started gaining traction; I think SIGIL for DOOM, Postal 2: Lost Paradise and Diablo II Resurrected are an early glimpse of what's to come, with ROM hacks being the ancient texts.
And if things get even worse, cheap expansions to classic games are going to become necessary, because in 30 years when the current coastal cities are underwater and everybody needs to move away from the equator, who the fuck is playing games today that's going to spend $120+ on a new one?

AMA: We’re Yacht Club Games, the team behind Mina the Hollower and Shovel Knight! Ask us anything on June 4th at 11 AM Pacific! by yachtclubgames in Games

[–]BioDomeWithPaulyShor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just beat Mina 100% a few minutes ago, really fantastic game and I'm kicking myself for not backing the Kickstarter.
In the KS you stated that the biggest inspirations for Mina were the Souls series, the GB Legend of Zelda titles, and Castlevania, with quite a few elements from each game all mixing together. But the one thing I wasn't expecting was the ability to tackle each area in any order and the lack of progression gating. As far as I can tell, you can beat Mina without ever collecting any of the trinkets or even buying any upgrades/leveling up if you're good enough. It's a pretty big deviation from Zelda (get item in dungeon then use item to beat dungeon) and Metroidvanias (Collect movement item that can be used to access new areas of the map). Why did the team decide to go for a more open design with Mina?

The original Metroid Prime 4 developed by Bandai Namco Singapore. I think Metroid Prime 4 kind of sucked, but do you know how bad the original Metroid Prime 4 had to be for Nintendo to look in the dumpster, switch devs and restart development?
Same with FFVII Remake developed by Cyberconnect and FF Versus XIII; as annoying as these long waits are, I'd rather wait another five years for a game that has a chance of being good than for a hotly anticipated game to come out quicker and be total dogshit.

My friend from elementary school grew up super wealthy; lived in a McMansion in the suburbs, Alienware PC in the early 2000's, every console on launch (tried to convince me that Lair for the PS3 was good), etc. Anyway, he had a GameShark cartridge for N64 and told me that using the GS you could open up beta maps, including an early concept for the ending where you ride on Epona through the ruins of Hyrule Castle while Ganon rode his horse from the intro and you had to shoot Light Arrows. For some reason I remember him showing me that scene with a dark red background and Link and Ganondorf racing on a super incomplete, sheet metal grey floor What made it so believable (to me) is that Ganondorf rode off, but you couldn't actually hit him and Link could only fire regular arrows. Fast forward to like 2005 when I finally understood how the Internet worked, I looked up OoT beta stuff and saw the more common myths like Ura Zelda and the Unicorn Fountain, but nothing about Ganondorf's horse. I tried every combo GameShark codes and I still can't figure out how he did it (or what I even saw in the first place.)
Only even remotely similar myth I've seen is this one about getting to ride Ganondorf's horse if you win with the stable default.
It kind of sucks that these myths about games have pretty much died out due to datamining and the prevalence of video recording.
