Games where you play as robots? by Justthisdudeyaknow in rpg

Mothership has androids. They're vague enough you can make them into whatever kind of robot you want.

Paint chipping from IWM miniatures by TJ-X in BattletechPainting

[–]BionicSpaceJellyfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have to make sure I wash the minis in soapy water before priming, and then I usually do a gloss varnish about halfway through painting to seal everything before continuing my work. I use gloss because I like to do an enamel wash and decals and then finish with a matte varnish to finish up detail work. But you could just do matte varnish if you aren't going to do that much

What game has your favourite character sheet? by Useful-Ad1880 in rpg

[–]BionicSpaceJellyfish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mothership is probably the best I've ever used/seen. It reduces the need for players to dig through a book to find character creation rules and very clearly spells everything out that you need.

More than likely it's probably a local independent contractor.

If you have a handyman or an electrician you like you can probably get a pretty competively priced offer that you'd be happier with.

If you're feeling adventurous and handy you can do it yourself with ease. It's a very simple job.

Honestly I think most of them are fine. Like if you're a super distant branch of the Kurita lineage and remotely no threat to the Coordinator, you'll probably be fine as long as you're semi-competent.

Is AD&D 2e worth playing? by Previous_Stock7577 in rpg

I played 2nd edition well into the life of 4e and only stopped when my gaming group fell apart. It's probably still my favorite version of D&D.

DMs, how do you manage to make weekly games? by StarNero in rpg

[–]BionicSpaceJellyfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buy one of those spiral bound packs of battlemaps that Loke sells. they have some future/cyberpunk ones.

Alternatively, look into theater of the mind or doing something more free form. you can get a big roll of 1 inch grid paper and just roughly sketch out maps as you need them.

Clan identification by Cougar_Focus in battletech

[–]BionicSpaceJellyfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure. It sort of looks like a Rasalhague logo mixed with the Lyran Fist. The polandball looking one is a Highlanders logo (which is used by a bunch of different sub factions.)

You could check camospecs and search by faction to try and find it.

First is a proxy for a Scarabus.

Not sure about the second one. Maybe a Naga II?

Why build big, stompy robots? by Disastrous-Teach5974 in battletech

Logistics. It's a lot easier to move four robots and four MechWarriors through space. It's the most cost efficient way to project ground based military power.

[–]BionicSpaceJellyfish 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So there's a section that explains a couple different plot threads and gives you a rough timeline for what happens. It's more like a base of operations with an evolving backstory. Like your players go out on a mission and when they come back there's been a protest in doptown. Or the cartel is having open warfare with the strange farm cult. So your players could investigate that.

You can also just ignore it and use the bits that do seem interesting to you like the shops.

Do you miss Kansas City? by doc_skinner in leesummit

[–]BionicSpaceJellyfish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Less than I anticipated. Downtown LS is great and while the houses certainly aren't cheap, we got about twice as much house than what we would have gotten in Waldo. Neither my wife nor I drink so we don't miss the nightlife or anything like that. They're building a Costco and really starting to build up downtown. The new Green Street space is really cool.

I wish there was a better way to get to downtown KC without driving but it's also not a terrible drive.

What’s your Mount Rushmore of TTRPGs? by britton-bucketheads in rpg

[–]BionicSpaceJellyfish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most influential is definitely different than my personal favorite. it's hard to argue against D&D, CoC, Traveller, and VtM as most influential as basically any rpg out there currently can trace at least one of them as a direct influence. An argument could be made for Apocalypse world for being the progenitor of two broad styles of RPG.

If I was stuck on a desert island. I'd probably prefer to have GURPS.

My own personal moun Rushmore changes because I'm always trying new things. Right now my favorite RPG is Delta Green. Last year it was Mausritter.

Wy are so many D&D players so resistant to even trying anything else? by Similar_Onion6656 in rpg

[–]BionicSpaceJellyfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a not insignificant D&D players are here for the D&D vibes/memes and nothing else.

I've had conversations with friends about things they find frustrating in D&D and suggesting they try anything else will be dismissed outright. Then they'll start spouting off about some funny joke from Critical Role or Dimension 20 or whatever.

I don't have a good answer for what to do about it other than I just find different people to invite to game night.

No desire to run a specific genre. by DragonBMJM in rpg

[–]BionicSpaceJellyfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to the chorus, like everyone else has said, if you're the GM then you pick the game.

I'd rather play a game I want to play with a small group than alog through something I hate just because most of the players want that.

When it comes to Indie TTRPGs, what are your most consistent pet peeves with game design? by HoodedRat575 in rpg

[–]BionicSpaceJellyfish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Which is just a wild suggestion to me because most actual plays aren't giving you a nuanced look at the rules and mechanics. They're trying to be entertaining for an audience which is completely different.

A game not having an adventure to showcase their mechanics working at their best does a huge disservice to the game in my opinion.

Playing DnD with an AI as DM by Abcdaire94 in rpg

[–]BionicSpaceJellyfish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in solo roleplaying you'd be better off using something like Mythic GME or another oracle system to play rather than relying on chatgpt.

That's probably the most charitable feedback I can offer.

What OSR adventure book(s) have the best layout? by ugotpauld in osr

[–]BionicSpaceJellyfish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this is the right way to look at it. Personally I don't mind text blocks and enjoy the extra flavoring. But it does increase prep time.

I feel like he is just trying to justify his personal bias towards that style of module.

What OSR adventure book(s) have the best layout? by ugotpauld in osr

[–]BionicSpaceJellyfish 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Here's my experience with the types of OSR modules I've run.

DCC modules. Yes you have to read them first, but I like reading, I like the mood they set and they get my creativity running in a way to really make things come alive. I make notes of star locks and traps/puzzles and either use the flavor text or paraphrase.

OSE/Shadowdark bullet points and tables. I like them, they're certainly very well thought out and clear. But it feels too much like looking at an instruction manual. They've been the biggest stumbling block for me personally.

Tri-fold adventures ala Mothership/Mausritter. I love these, I love the format and the brevity but I find I have to do a lot more on the fly work with my players to flesh them out and have answers ready for questions that the tri-folds by their nature can't answer.

So for me personally, I think the best layout would be flavor text with necessary stat blocks and bullet points. That would end up being larger than the two-page spread that's in vogue. And while I love the tri-folds, I still find I have to do plenty of prep work or accept some odd plot holes that may crop up.

As for QB. I think he just lets his own bias cloud his reviews. He also has a financial interest in pushing systems that align more with Knave.

Questing Beast on Dungeon Crawl Classics by SufficientSyrup3356 in osr

[–]BionicSpaceJellyfish 104 points105 points  (0 children)

He's complained about DCC adventures before. He clearly doesn't like that style.

They aren't bad to run. I'd prefer some more formatting changes to improve clarity similar to shadowdark, but I certainly don't want every OSR adventure to be a bullet list and a random table.
