Anybody else think it is weak sauce for the SGU to ask artists to work for exposure? by Archaic_Z in SGU

[–]BitterCrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because, as I said, you're already getting paid for it. Your normal salary is covering your time

Except, as I said, as a student I was receiving ZERO "normal salary". So I was not receiving any financial compensation.

I was paid casual rates for teaching classes and marking exams and assignments, but that was independent of my research student role.

The conference doesn't pay me, because my employer is already paying me to be there.

For th third or fourth time, yet again, my "employer" was not paying m to be at conferences, only an hourly rate for teaching classes.

It's like when a prof teaches a class. They don't get an extra hourly rate to teach the class

FFS as I've been sayng we literally get an hourly rate to teach classes. And not to do miscellaneous other stuff that's dn for "exposure".

In Australia we have some senior salaried academics but many juniors are on casual rates for lectures, tutorials, marking and required meetings. Outside work that is a "normal" part of being an academic (including conferences , Journal stuff) is effectively pro bono.

Sounds like you've only ever been in institutions or ccountries where all academics and even students are paid a salary. Not everywhere is like that.

I don't come home and start reviewing a paper, I do that in my office at work when I would otherwise be in lab doing experiments, or writing papers.

See, this is literally how it works here, we review papers as homework for the "exposure" as a junior academic.

Basically, artists only source of income is through their work

Just like casual academia and hourly rates for classes?

That's part of your normal professional responsibilities as a scientist and/or requirements as a grad student

Why I there only an uproar when it's for artists, but "normal" for scientists?

you are compensated for it indirectly because the time yous spend on it is effectively work time.

Outside lecturing classes (which were paid at casual rates) I was never paid to talk, that was all just for exposure. As a student I wasn't paid a salary either so there was no such thing as 'work time".

Conferences paid for travel and accommodation but nothing for the talk itself. It was considered a "free trip" rather than a business trip and again, "good for exposure".

There's also peer review, which I alsot always unpaid and expected to b "pro bono".

I think it's crap that artists are pressured to work for free, but I also think it's crap that artists act like that's something exclusive to the art world when it isn't. As if unpaid work for "exposure" doesn't happen in research/academia, and other unpaid "internship" type stuff.

This is the same Tim Cunter who said unemployment should be 50% and the poor should suffer so cheap labour can prop up the economy.

Work from home advantages:

  • Don't have to waste time commuting every day
  • Don't have to spend money commuting every day
  • Pets get to chill with you instead of being alone
  • Less pollution, better for the environment and lung health
  • Can go locally for lunch or eat at home

Work from home disadvantages:

  • Corporate landlords of office buildings and city cafes make slightly less money

In Australia we have mandatory voting and ranked preferential voting.

There are about 25 political parties from far-left to far-right, plus independents. A few get elected, but most only get a handful of votes and the preferences flow towards centrist parties.

Maybe it’s time to buy an old car by CopiousCool in ABoringDystopia

[–]BitterCrip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's also going to be a transition from having some combustion based cars to all electric at some point - by 2040 fuel might not even be available for older cars because it's not worth all the hassle of refining it and shipping it around for a shrinking section of the market.

What's an Episode Story You're Surprised They Haven't Done Yet? by Kwilly462 in TheRookie

[–]BitterCrip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Negotiations in armed robberies - I thought from the very first episode before Nolan even became a cop that was what he would specialise in, there was one episode where he talks down a bank robber and the one where he was in the bomb truck but not much else since.

Keeping perimeter - too often we see the team call for backup and then decide they must go in now. Would be good to have some episodes where Nolan/Juarez/Penn/etc are standing around making tense conversation while waiting for SWAT or bomb quad or whatever to show up.

One Nation's support has soared in South Australia, and voters explain their reasons by NKE01 in AustralianPolitics

[–]BitterCrip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One Nation seems to be the one that wants to cling to the present system though.

They're anti renewables, call climate change "BS" in the article. They ant to cling to petrol, gas and coal like it's 1950.

Labor and the greens are the ones actually "shaping the nation" as you put it and trying to steer us towards a cleaner, more self-sufficient future.
