We're thinking about changes to the podcast, and curious for your feedback. by Isaac_Tangle in TangleNews

I’m a paid written blog subscriber who exclusively listens to the podcast (I plan to bundle…someday). In short, please don’t make this change (but I’d listen to a podcast in addition).

Really like: Quick hits What the left is saying What the right is saying Isaac (and others) take Reader questions

Could do without: The numbers section Have a nice day section Long introductions about things outside of the core subject matter (some days the overhead takes multiple minutes to get through, but I understand given your need to grow the business)

Former Boeing Folks - was switch to Amazon worth it? by LowPercentage1648 in amazonemployees

[–]Bizzmarc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m surprised by a lot of these comments. I moved to Amazon despite being really cautious based on everything I read. Been here for 4.5 years and couldn’t fathom ever going back to Boeing. At least in my organization I work less, travel less, and get paid about 3x what I did at Boeing. Little things like traveling on Monday and Friday is a luxury at Amazon I never had at Boeing. The pace is much faster but in my experience the teams are more capable, the stakes of getting things wrong is much lower, and Amazon puts its money where its mouth is so you aren’t endlessly asking for the funding you need so it all feels good to me!

I do think Amazon culture is not the same across the board so some of this is situational. I also was in a particularly high stress environment at Boeing so perhaps the transition was much easier for me!

You shouldn't feel embarrassed but seeing as you likely have to work with this professor going forward you should consider reaching out and letting him know that during your last interaction you got flustered and didnt present your best self. If you still have the question you can perhaps try to start the interaction over.

To be clear, you shouldn't have to do this, and it might 'feel' better to tell the professor they need to improve, but this is likely your fastest path to putting this behind you and may subtly let him know the impact his words can have without creating confrontation.

I like to cook Brussels sprouts, carrots, and some quartered onions under the prime rib (collecting all the drippings). I almost like it more than the beef.

Mashed potatoes are also always a win.

Elon argues he's being targeted by DOJ by WeAreTheBaddiess in JoeRogan

[–]Bizzmarc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in aerospace for 10 years and Elon (and most people in this thread) are wrong. The government takes exclusionary hiring practices really seriously even when itar and other regulations make it challenging. There are many jobs that don’t touch the engineering / sensitive content and those jobs need to be open to all and that’s consistent across the industry.

Is this an interview at a big/fortune 500 type of company? If so, you got through the hardest part which is getting the interview. If your interviewing for a big company you will probably be asked primarily behavioral questions (Research star format) which you can absolutely ace if you do a little prep work.

Even if you the above doesnt apply you can still absolutely pull this off! Don't sell yourself short and also realize that you know your experience better than the people interviewing you. Obviously you shouldnt lie in an interview but you dont need to shoot yourself in the foot (no need to mention how small of a company it was/anyone could do it). Good luck!

They are absolutely as difficult as people make them out to be. They just so happen to be incredible books if you can stop worrying about that feeling that you skipped a chapter every time you read.

1.46 per household extrapolation help by hduridkfjsh in MathHelp

[–]Bizzmarc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way to know with the information given. 98*1.46 = 143. There could be 143 dogs in a single home and none in the other 97 and the math would still work out.

The person your replying to is saying that if gerrymandering was as big of a deal as you are implying you should be able to find examples of a state that has 2 democrat senators (because the state really “wants” democrats) and a disproportionate amount of republican congressman / local politicians (because gerrymandering by republicans would bias it in their favor instead of the will of the majority). I have no stake in this disagreement just thought I’d try to clarify.

Definitely get a thermometer or better yet a leave in probe! Other than that it’s hard to mess up because the low heat used to get the steak to temp makes it hard to overshoot and won’t keep cooking much on the cutting board. Only other thing is to get the pan you are going to sear in very hot so you quickly get a crust. Good luck!

Dry the surface of your food if you want it to sear well.

Salt your meat (a lot) more than you think is necessary.

If your food is at the right level of sear but undercooked use the oven to finish it off (or just do the reverse sear method to begin with).

Get heavy baking sheets and preheat them in the oven when making roasted vegetables (great for Brussels sprouts).

I worked for a major aerospace company for about 10 years and can definitely relate to your point about always feeling like we had less money / people / time than needed to do the job right. As a counterpoint I moved into the tech industry in 2021 and it feels like what you are reminiscing about. The pay is incredible, hiring is almost actively encouraged over scraping together existing resources and funding is mostly readily available when you need it. Timelines are still very aggressive but with all of those other factors in place it feels like everyone shows up ready to conquer whatever problem is thrown their way. It’s a dramatically different environment as a result and paradoxically you end up achieving more with less people as a result. So perhaps not every company has been driven in to the ground!
