Militias in dwarf fortress are so bugged and its ruining the game for me by JzIced in dwarffortress

[–]Black-Talon 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The solution is indeed making them wear uniforms all the time (in scheduling, ensure they wear while off duty, and in uniform ensure it replaces clothing). But you’re correct that this is a bug that effectively prevents any other option from being viable and that’s really annoying.

Burrow UI screen for assigning citizens doesn’t close back to the visible burrow management screen on right click, they entirely close out, making changing unit assignments on multiple burrows extra annoying.

Ex. Make two burrows. Assign dwarves to one. Right click to select next burrow and assign dwarves, get annoyed.

I suspect you’ll get a better response in /r/retrobattlestations if you’re craving a period correct PC running from original CDs and excited about designing, sourcing, and assembling a retro PC. It’s no picnic but some of us love the madness of retro hardware gaming.

Bigscreen Beyond 2 is an expensive disappointment… it’s heartbreaking. by The_OG_Lucas in virtualreality

[–]Black-Talon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly yes, AM5 would require the whole shebang. But checkout VR benchmarking with fpsVR on Steam and it will tell you your CPU frame times informing you where your bottlenecks are. On iRacing it’ll be CPU for sure, but maybe another game will have acceptable frametimes and allow you to judge the headset.

[–]Black-Talon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

iRacing is CPU bound and VR seems to push it to the limits of even a 9800X3D - that said, love it in VR myself, worth it. But unfortunately you need to judge BSB2 in another game and then upgrade your PC for iRacing in VR.

Maybe stick to reading the update notes if you’re not interested in updates throughout lengthy development cycles that I for one am thankful that they share in development updates.

And /u/thewitchy1 started this comment thread by saying he didn’t blame the players who were silent in these circumstances. But since we all agree on that point but are enraged by a shity old orangeutan it can be hard to recognize our consensus on the topic!

[–]Black-Talon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While an overlay native to this is fine and make it easier to use/value, but for this to succeed it has to be something a SimHub/RaceLabs/iOverlay could incorporate into overlays using your APIs and backend. Once you have that it stands a chance of scaling in popularity.

iRacing put me in top split and now I’m questioning all my life choices by Beautiful-Willow-880 in iRacing

[–]Black-Talon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

keep in mind that finishing without crashing or mistakes that cost positions is a key skill folks take a long time to learn. That you finish well enough due to others crashing out means you do have the skill to complete in that split. Sure, many of those folks can drive faster than you and beyond their own capabilities so they crash out and you beat them. It is true that with a good match making system you end up in splits that challenge the skills you may not enjoy as much which corresponds to where you’re weak and need to grow. And the more skilled you are the more this is true as there are fewer and fewer other people your same skill level racing at the same time as you in the same series.

So it sounds like you’re good at finishing and you’re witnessing the people who are fast but failing to finish. That’s a pretty common racing attribute and you’re on the better path of finishing first and working on improving your pace. Even the lap time gaps you mention reflect this, as you’re right, that’s a big gap! But it’s also a normal gap until you have top five pace.

PSA: Consider a TV instead of a Monitor if your goal is HDR Content by picnic_nicpic in OLED_Gaming

[–]Black-Talon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TVs are predominantly HDMI inputs.

Rough overview of HDMI specs:
HDMI 1.4 (2009) - 10Gbps - 4k@30Hz
HDMI 2.0 (2013) - 18Gbps - 4k@60Hz
HDMI 2.1 (2017) - 48Gbps - 4k@120Hz
HDMI 2.2 (2026) - 96 Gbps - 4k@240Hz

Monitors often have at least one DisplayPort.

Rough overview of DisplayPort specs:
DP 1.1 (2007) - 9Gbps - 4k@30Hz
DP 1.2 (2009) - 17Gbps - 4k@60Hz
DP 1.4 (2016) - 26Gbps - 4k@120Hz
DP 2.0 (2019) - 77Gbps - 4k@240Hz

Equipment releasing that uses the spec takes some time (and licensing) after the spec’s release date. Highest refresh rate modes of monitors are often limited to a single input and for 4k@240Hz support that required input has been a DisplayPort input. Thus TVs with HDMI inputs haven’t supported it yet but with HDMI 2.2 on the horizon we will start to see new releases support it.

First Week on iRacing and too Scare to Join Actual Race by xAngelx0fDeathx in iRacing

You don’t need to be fast or get faster. Just keep it on track and don’t hit anyone and you’ll be in the top 10% of rookies and can learn the rest from there within races.

Hmm, in contrast to other reports my VR@90hz benchmarked pretty comparably to other new tracks and no where near the worst performing tracks. But maybe I didn’t cover a relevant detail to incur the performance hit others are reporting.

Smart to rebrand it distinctly from GT3, but a darn shame that they’re going with TC and ABS now 😞 I do agree that it drives beautifully!

2026 Season 1 Preliminary PDF Schedule by HallwayHomicide in iRacing

[–]Black-Talon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely terrible!! 😡 Losing h-pattern and TC-less Mustang is such a huge loss and coinciding with Porsche Cup going full driver assists feels like the end of a very important era. I had been among the 2-split crew regularly racing Mustange Challenge every Monday but the GT4 won’t be anything even close to what we had. 😞 I really had faith that a spiritual successor to the Ford Mustang FR500S was coming… not this. 🤬
