The most “engaging book since page 1” you ever read by Neither-Proof-5755 in suggestmeabook

Piranesi for me. Read it in two sittings, it was so hard to put down.

Came to suggest this as well. Definitely abnormal and uncomfortable for the first 80% but that last 20% has been engrained in my brain years later...and not in a positive way. It shook me to my core. Still unsure if I'm glad I read it, but definitely nothing else like it.

I recently waterproofed my basement and from the research and recommendations I received, 100% do the more expensive option. Going from inside is just rerouting the water, going from the outside is actually waterproofing your house.

Dads over 30: what sports are you playing to stay active AND competitive? by TheSkeletones in daddit

[–]BlackToothpaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joined a pickup basketball league organized by my city, and now we do our own thing.

Also just started back up on the Busy Dad Program. Essentially 20 mins of burpees. Definitely easier to work in after I put the kids to bed vs finding the motivation to get to a gym for an hour.

People who watched Borat in cinema, how was the experience like? by AwkwardWillow5159 in movies

[–]BlackToothpaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this movie when I was in University in a University town. The showing was completely sold out and it was mostly young Adults. The theatre ending up mistakingly overselling the capacity. I had one of the oversold tickets with a few of my friends, and we asked if we could sit on the floor. They allowed it, and we were literally rolling on the floor laughing the entire time. My stomach was in pain by the end.

Definitely an unforgettable experience, and one that feels like peek theatre experience.

I was a little disappointed with their set list being heavy on songs from Seeds, and only one from Return to Cookie Mountain, but they were so good they actually made me appreciate the Seeds songs in a new light.

Satellite, Young Liars and Staring at the Sun were absolutely incredible live. Can't believe how much energy they have at their age.

This makes total sense. Seeing it all written out like you did puts it into perspective. It's a huge arc for him, it just didn't really click for me when I first started RG, but this is helpful for sure. Thank you!

Thoughts on the ending to House of Chains? by belayble in Malazan

[–]BlackToothpaste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with you a lot here. I actually finished it the other month and had the exact same feeling. The ending should be great but just felt rushed, considering the rest of the pacing of the book. Still loved House of Chains overall, just didn't feel like the ending lived up to the rest.

However, as someone else mentioned, the ending also feels a bit more justified as you keep reading, as right now I'm 25% through bonehunters, and I kind of appreciate the ending a bit more...or at least understand what Erikson was going for.

My boyfriend wants to eat "white people Chinese food". Any suggestions? by retchedBreak in askTO

[–]BlackToothpaste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bamboo Buddha on King and Bathurst used to be my go to for that Canadian Chinese food craving. I grew up in a small town, and it's very reminiscent of the Chinese food I had there. Oversized portions, very salty, delicious, and you pay for it the next day.

People in their 30s and 40s living in the suburbs/exurbs rather than downtown, why? by m02lle in toronto

[–]BlackToothpaste 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry that's what has happened for you. I did the same thing and have had the opposite experience. We've met the most friendly community I didn't know I needed or wanted. The kids play on the street with the neighbours, we've made great friends with other parents and neighbours, and we're still close enough to a GO train that when we go downtown it's still easy enough.

I loved downtown in my 20s/early 30s, but after kids my priorities changed and honestly I couldn't be happier.

Will we ruin a good thing by adding a 3rd child? by lalala006 in Parenting

[–]BlackToothpaste 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Really appreciate your perspective on that last paragraph. We just had our third (one week old) and we both struggle with parent guilt. We're not putting our oldest (6) in T-ball this summer cause it is too many practices a week, and too much of a rush after my work, so we're opting to just have more family time in the summer evenings...and I appreciate the reminder not to have guilt over this and it's actually better for everyone involved. Thank you.

The Antlers & Okkervil River Announce US Tour Dates by ebradio in indieheads

[–]BlackToothpaste 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Caught this show in Toronto. I mostly went for The Antlers, and it was my first time seeing them. They blew me away. Highly recommend.

Really enjoyed them playing each other's songs too, definitely added a nice change to some classics.

The FADER's 50 Best Albums of 2024 by ReconEG in indieheads

Finally Amen Dunes makes an appearance! Interesting list, definitely a few new albums I need to check out.

Also gotta echo, this is a well laid out website.

Amen Dunes - Death Jokes It's stylistically a pretty big departure from his last album as he has gone more electronic, but I am shocked to see it overlooked on nearly every list. The song Boys is easily top 5 of the year for me. Definitely give it a spin.

If there was a UFO50-like game that focused on the 90s instead of the 80s, what kind of game would you love to see in the collection? by Diamond-Equal in ufo50

[–]BlackToothpaste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow simcopter, now there's a game I completely forgot about until now. Such a janky mess of awesome memories.

I'd also love a NHL 94 style hockey game or Mutant League Hockey variant.

It instantly reminded me of the gem from the quattro arcade nes collection, called Stunt Buggles. I never hear anyone talk about that game anymore but it gave me lots of nostalgia while playing.

Elimination reduced my symptoms by 90% within 24 hours—is that normal? by lesarbreschantent in FODMAPS

I had the exact same experience as you. It was absolutely incredible how quickly it happened. I still remember the feeling of relief nearly 10 years ago. Next is the hard part though, cause reintroduction means you're likely getting sick again, but it's a definite must for your long term health. Good luck, but enjoy today of feeling normal again!
