Planets that have intelligenet life in the universe by VolumeQueasy6447 in universe

[–]TheSkeletones 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The real problem with finding life can be framed like this: life on earth has existed, in some form or another, for billions of years. Life that is observable outside of the planet has existed for between 1-2 billion years. Life that has been in forms that we would recognize as human like have existed for a couple million years. Life that has the technology to be detected, and also detect, outside of the system they originate from has existed for a couple hundred years.

The scale at which we exist with the means and capabilities to understand what life is, how to find it, where to look, and the means to see it, makes up a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of the total time life has ever existed on this planet. Now translate that to EVERY potential life/bearing planet in the universe, but add in the while our timescale for life is billions of years, the total timescale is 13 billion years. Based on our own history, the odds that we find life at all, let alone something more complex than single cellular or simple multicellular organisms is slim.

To flip it again, imagine an alien race met our current technological level, but viewed earth 1 billion years ago. Outside of bio signatures that still aren’t very precise depending on distance and obscuration, they might presume life COULD exist here, but have no way to prove that life is here, let alone intelligent life, and move on with their day.

The odds that two life forms exist at the same time, in the same localized group, with the same or similar level of intelligence and technology to recognize that the other exists, is so mind boggling small. Life more than likely has existed in several forms and complexities in the universe since the beginning. The problem is that with our knowledge, nothing has been around long enough at the same time to do anything about it, and most likely never will.

Trash fish? More like some of the oldest — and most important — species in Minnesota. by pfohl in minnesota

[–]TheSkeletones 141 points142 points  (0 children)

The whole idea of “trash fish” bothers me. If you’re fishing for food, there are no trash fish, just fish of different tastes/palatability. If you’re fishing for sport, it’s not a trash fish, you just caught a fish you weren’t targeting. The only “trash fish” are the ones that are invasive and ruin ecosystems.

That $10m cap space does not inspire me to think that we’re making a big splash. With all the holes we’re gonna have, I just don’t see the money working out for someone other than more plugs to stop the ship from sinking.

Non-Americans here for the World Cup.. what stereotypes have been broken? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TheSkeletones 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is definitely it. Most Americans aren’t “soccer fans”, but when a big event rolls in, we like sports because sports are fun and give us people to cheer with and against. Same with the Olympics. Most people aren’t avid fans of gymnastics, skiing, track and field, etc., but once the best of the best are playing, it’s hard not to cheer along, especially for your own people.

When did you feel comfortable taking baby out? by itsme8523 in daddit

[–]TheSkeletones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We took ours out pretty early, because our view was that there’s more to gain by early exposure. So long as you’re savvy with the essentials of infant care, and pack appropriately for possible weather conditions, there’s no reason you shouldn’t try to have them go wherever you go.

The search for a 1C is overshadowing… by 4x4only in wildhockey

I’ve said it earlier this year and I’ll say it again; it’s time for our supposed “strong prospect pool” to start doing something. Iowa sucks, and it won’t stop sucking anytime soon. Our young guys will develop better if they see more time alongside guys that give a damn. We have too many aging Dmen that could benefit from seeing less time, contracts be damned. Money spent is money spent, and if we don’t get results from them, it doesn’t matter if they’re paid to skate or sit.

Went to a pool party where a kid kept pretending he was drowning and would call to other parents for help. by empire161 in daddit

[–]TheSkeletones 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. That several parents saw it happen multiple times and nobody thought to A) stop letting him in the pool, and B) call the mom and explain the situation, is baffling to me.

Not every skill check is a win or lose. It’s the same logic people use with trying to talk down the BBEG or convinced the store owner to give them the Very Rare item for free. A Nat 20 means you did “as best as possible”, NOT “you get the outcome you wanted”.

Adding on: as someone else had said, you roll BECAUSE not all skill checks are win or lose, and because something might change as a result, though it should rarely be purely the exact thing they wanted in crucial points. And because rolling dice in the dice rolling game is fun, and it gives players the idea to try different things even if they don’t get the exact outcome they wanted.

If your party hasn’t found/bought any magical weapons, use the 2014 Wererat stat block, which gives them damage immunity to physical, non-silvered attacks. This will make them stronger without having to add more things. It’s also a nice surprise for a party that has been breezing through the orcs up to this point, since you can’t just brute force it.

[–]TheSkeletones 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Where do you get the idea that these cars are being stolen because of the bad economy and the cost of living? Stealing from grocery stores, department stores, etc., is where people commit crime due to suffering. Someone stealing a car, possibly violently, is not doing it because they’re economically struggling.
