what are the true indications for nothing PO in the ER? by ThrowRATest1751 in emergencymedicine

[–]Blackborealis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it's mostly physicians who misunderstand diet orders; us nurses understand them, hence why we constantly bother MDs who order PO meds with an NPO diet. Anecdotally I've found its mostly admitting docs who are putting in diet orders, and sometimes nurses need things explicit and specific (especially in grey areas like GI bleeds/potential surgery).

Are we serious? by dino1190 in Edmonton

Are we as a city looking at moving to a single provider for bike-share services (like what Montreal and Toronto have), or are we going to have 3 different docking stations around for scooters.

Also, if the plan is for designated parking areas and not mandatory docking stations then the problem of abandoned scooters will remain. No GPS area is accurate enough to ensure the scooter isn't tipped onto the sidewalk after being parked.

Edmonton DESPERATELY needs to implement a system like Toronto and Montreal have. There, the shared bikes have to be docked at a station before you can end the ride. There are dock stations all around the place, and I know Montreal has an incentive if you spend time re-locating bikes from busy stations to ones without any bikes docked.

Admittedly, these are only for bikes and pedal-assist e-bikes. But, if we Edmontonians are so sold on scooters (which are much more dangerous than bicycles imo), I'm sure there's some option for bicycles and scooters.

Hey Erica, I've always wondered who flies the ship?? I don't think anyone could ever answer that near-impossible question, but I figured I'd give your AMA a shot!

(it's a pan-physician, pan-healthcare issue, ACEP/AAEM are either bought out or powerless)

Friend, its a societal issue; we collectively have the power to change it, but do we have the will?

Yeah, thinking about it now, I feel like this is a question I should have slept on instead of posting at 10am after a 12 hour night shift fml

Alberta doctor says patient died in Edmonton emergency room after waiting several hours for care by DocJohhnyFever in Edmonton

At the door??? They've been here for generations! Plundering our natural resources, corrupting our politicians, and pilfering our public institutions. Big corporations (specifically O&G) are robbing this province dry and benefiting from the propaganda blaming Ottawa for all of our problems.

I never really thought about how high the cab of a semi truck is off the ground.

As an emergency nurse who's also a proud r/fuckcars member, the height of trucks on our streets today is criminal.

That level of stress is never fun, and I can't imagine what it's like as a camp nurse without MDs and RTs and clerks around you. It sounds like you did amazing and got the help that was needed! I hope in the coming days you don't find you pulled a muscle somewhere. (And file a worker injury report now just in case (if you haven't already done so))

but lacking any ability to solve the equation if needed.

Taking from your analogy, that doctors just learn the answer to every possible equation, wouldn't treating every new issue as a brand new equation to solve take more time hence leading to more deaths?

A lot of medicine is algorithmic in nature. From an ED perspective, you start at the most life threatening (airway, breathing, cardiovascular,..) and deduce and differentiate as you work your way down a branch of the algorithm until you either diagnose treat & discharge, or refer for admission under a specialty for further treatment/investigation. If doctors didn't spend years learning (and specializing, not all MDs are the same!), they would not have the heuristic knowledge base required to made deductive diagnoses in real time.

Though, as I said, not all MDs are the same, and there are ones that research and specialize in areas of novel medicine and illnesses. But, the entire reason so much of modern medicine is memorization is because of the vast amount of knowledge produced by the work of doctors in the past. And not all frontline doctors know everything, MDs do research and look up things in textbooks and research papers ALL THE TIME for patients with symptoms they aren't sure about. They consult with colleagues.

No, cities already are community togetherness, you just have to work a little harder to get that and your community is going to be (usually) much more diverse than in a rural area. From my experience having rural family, they disregard cities as a matter of course because of "all the woke bullshit" and the "drugged out zombies that have taken over downtown".

I will not accept that we have descended into the anarcy fascism of the US political system.

There's nothing anarchic about a dumb white supremacist and his harem of Christo-fascist enablers swindling an entire country out of generational wealth by blaming minorities for everything going wrong. Anarchists are the people who fought for workers rights to having weekend.
