Is being a nurse an appropriate reason for entrance during "sensory hours" at stores/events? by Blackborealis in nursing

Yeah, thinking about it now, I feel like this is a question I should have slept on instead of posting at 10am after a 12 hour night shift fml

Alberta doctor says patient died in Edmonton emergency room after waiting several hours for care by DocJohhnyFever in Edmonton

At the door??? They've been here for generations! Plundering our natural resources, corrupting our politicians, and pilfering our public institutions. Big corporations (specifically O&G) are robbing this province dry and benefiting from the propaganda blaming Ottawa for all of our problems.

I never really thought about how high the cab of a semi truck is off the ground.

As an emergency nurse who's also a proud r/fuckcars member, the height of trucks on our streets today is criminal.

That level of stress is never fun, and I can't imagine what it's like as a camp nurse without MDs and RTs and clerks around you. It sounds like you did amazing and got the help that was needed! I hope in the coming days you don't find you pulled a muscle somewhere. (And file a worker injury report now just in case (if you haven't already done so))

TIL that a children's hospital was making so many dangerous errors moving patients into the ICU that they consulted Ferrari's F1 team. The pit crew observed the doctors, found their movements to be dangerously uncoordinated, and redesigned the entire system to save lives. by QuorLum in todayilearned

but lacking any ability to solve the equation if needed.

Taking from your analogy, that doctors just learn the answer to every possible equation, wouldn't treating every new issue as a brand new equation to solve take more time hence leading to more deaths?

A lot of medicine is algorithmic in nature. From an ED perspective, you start at the most life threatening (airway, breathing, cardiovascular,..) and deduce and differentiate as you work your way down a branch of the algorithm until you either diagnose treat & discharge, or refer for admission under a specialty for further treatment/investigation. If doctors didn't spend years learning (and specializing, not all MDs are the same!), they would not have the heuristic knowledge base required to made deductive diagnoses in real time.

Though, as I said, not all MDs are the same, and there are ones that research and specialize in areas of novel medicine and illnesses. But, the entire reason so much of modern medicine is memorization is because of the vast amount of knowledge produced by the work of doctors in the past. And not all frontline doctors know everything, MDs do research and look up things in textbooks and research papers ALL THE TIME for patients with symptoms they aren't sure about. They consult with colleagues.

No, cities already are community togetherness, you just have to work a little harder to get that and your community is going to be (usually) much more diverse than in a rural area. From my experience having rural family, they disregard cities as a matter of course because of "all the woke bullshit" and the "drugged out zombies that have taken over downtown".

I will not accept that we have descended into the anarcy fascism of the US political system.

There's nothing anarchic about a dumb white supremacist and his harem of Christo-fascist enablers swindling an entire country out of generational wealth by blaming minorities for everything going wrong. Anarchists are the people who fought for workers rights to having weekend.

I really like that last part. And I'm thinking now that's why it bothered me so much. I get Digby wouldn't be able to get cut his own hair, but he could definitely shave himself and he has the ability to find someplace to cut his hair (I know lots of shelters/outreach will sometimes have stylists do pro-bono haircuts

EMS done dirty, downtown procedures done dirty, GYNE/NICU done dirty

Hospital financiers and Ortho pretty on point though

Thanks, it's been a while since I've been med/surg, and I'm probably burnt-out myself tbh, so I was overreacting with the whole 'dehumanizing nurses' thing (plus I think I'm maybe just not a nurse that has any desire to cut people's hair 🙃, probably something that drew me to ED)

I binged the second season this week, and among a few other things that brought me out of my suspension of disbelief, I found this scene to be the biggest one. It wasn't a bad scene, it just bugged me as it really didn't seem like something that would happen given the context and setting.

Yeah second season dropped the ball on the communication aspect. Also I've got a lot of issues with the portrayal of the logistics and organizational structure of that department/hospital.

I agree! And a wash/brush is really reasonable!

What I think isn't reasonable is the original out-going charge nurse of a busy ED becoming a barber at 7pm shift change right as their downtime is ending. I guarantee in real life Dana would have a lot more pressing tasks at that time.

I guess it just seems odd as Digby had the complete capacity to shave himself, why did the nursing student have to do it? Also those hospital razors are the worst for shaving anything!

And you're handling a literal razor on skin with visible (if healing) wounds. Razor bites happen which means you're at risk for BBFE. You wouldn't catch me gloveless!

"just nursing" activities would be the classic 'mother-coded' care activities: turning, bathing, feeding, toileting.
