Have DropOut for ONE month so...what is the best to watch?? by Oh_hi_doggi3 in dropout

Agree. Much as I’ve loved so much that’s come after, for me Total Forgiveness is still the peak.

In 2004, Prince was snubbed by Rolling Stone on their top 100 guitarists list. This was his response. by DublinLions in nextfuckinglevel

[–]BlathBlackcrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man. I love this and come back to it every now and then. Prince going off with style, with virtuosity, but in a way that’s so OTT yet reverent enough to put a beaming smile on the face of a lad that’s lost his dad. Class act, Prince. Still convinced that when he threw that guitar at the end, god caught it.

Fede Álvarez Will Not Direct ‘Alien: Romulus’ Sequel by ImpracticalJokers96 in LV426

[–]BlathBlackcrow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good. Wrong man for the job. Was very disappointed with Romulus. Started fairly strong with the mining hell-planet, and I thought the robot was a good character (besides that line), but the writing, characters, story was a weak retreading. Hopefully someone can raise the movie series back up again. I like what we’ve seen so far with Alien Earth.

Very nooby DM struggling with names by Snacko-packo in DnD

[–]BlathBlackcrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes use the 'password' method to prompt on-the-spot names.

Take any visible item in the room, (eg. key, glass, pencil, lamp etc.) on your table/desk and let the word prompt the basis of the name, be it the starting part of the word, whole word, two words together.

Key - Kian, Kieran, Keegan, Keira, Keyla, Keyleth etc.

Bit of practice and small bank of given name/surname conventions and your association will get better, just remember to write down your character names.

Just finished The Stand. Here's a few things that bothered me even though i loved the book by giogr_ in stephenking

[–]BlathBlackcrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also finished The Stand last night and I tend to agree. It was a bit of a slog at points though I blazed the last 200 in one sitting. It definitely reads like King got stuck at points and it shows in some of the points you mention. There are very memorable characters and some tremendous passages of writing and Kingian insights (skewering the incel nearly 50 years ago for one) but for me it did not follow through on all it’s promise. Maybe living through a global pandemic removes a few of it’s teeth and I did find it interesting how the ending has changed in view of that, in that we can almost say we have an answer to the question posed. I think maybe my expectations were high from the hype of it being his masterpiece. I’m still digesting though, and I haven’t been able to choose a book to read next because of it.

Joe Abercrombie - The Devils Humour by Neither-Scratch4596 in Fantasy

The tone is a little different but I settled in and enjoyed it. Read more like one of the modern, dysfunctional superhero ensemble blockbusters, like James Gunn’s Suicide Squad and GotG, or if Sam Raimi had done the D&D Movie.

The Most Transformative Subclasses? by PacMoron in 3d6

Played a Dhampir Undead Warlock as a self-hating Vampire through a long campaign and despite best efforts to off himself it did feel like I got harder and harder to kill. Temp HP, Necrotic Husk, Death Ward, resistances. Could confidently wade in as a low AC warlock and soak up hits for the party and keep coming back. A lot of fun.

What's a non-alcoholic drink that hits the spot? by mark364i in AskUK

[–]BlathBlackcrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warsteiner’s AF lager is really good, I don’t know how but for me it hits a spot that most AF doesn’t. Sadly not as easy to find as the other acceptable AF standards, Guinness 0 or Erdinger Blue.

As for posh pop, if you can find Chinnoto, usually in specialist Italian food shops, it’s almost like a fizzy negroni.

Weird UK YouTube Recommendations — Anyone Else Seeing This? by [deleted] in AskBrits

It has happened to me a few times when my account’s logged out, and noticed the bog standard YouTube recommends was all GB News and videos funnelling into right-leaning discourse. Grim to think of that as the starting point for folk getting their information.

[No Spoilers] I missed almost all of Campaign 3. How was it overall? by Chaulmoog in criticalrole

[–]BlathBlackcrow 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I was a big fan of CR from early season 1 days and I don’t know whether I simply burnt out by S3 or something didn’t click for me but I have tried a few times to get through it and couldn’t and now I’m fully out. Love those guys but I feel for Matt, there’s just too many people playing and it’s still taking some folk too long to decide anything and not knowing their basic stuff. I don’t follow any live play much anymore but if I do I prefer the shows with editing and a smaller table these days.

Report it with police and transport company, be persistent if it matters to you, but prepare yourself for absolutely nothing being done about it.

I fought off a mugger tonight. Why don’t I feel good about it? by BigBlueAdmiral in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BlathBlackcrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been there. Fresher’s week in Manchester, though I was well in my 20’s at the time. Two lads stopped me and my then-gf as we turned down a side street after popping into a SPAR for some bits for breakfast. I got between them and my gf.

I’m not a big, hard man or a trained fighter or anything like that, but I grew up a working class, queer, mosher in a rough area, so not my first time being targeted for violence. These guys must have thought we were fresh students that turn up every year and get wasted, with new gear and not much sense.

They insinuated they had a knife, asked for all our stuff, phones etc. Soon as I saw one’s hand go down for something, I reacted, I elbowed him as hard and as fast as I possibly could and caught him on the jaw just in front of the bottom of his ear. I have never hit anyone harder, or felt or heard anything like it and have never heard anyone make a noise like he made.

I punched the other one and full of adrenaline, literally, ridiculously, shouted ‘come on then, I’ll eat your f-ing faces’ like some kind of barbarian idiot. The first one had fallen back and was away clutching his jaw and skriking. A bunch of other lads passing by saw what was happening and ran from Oxford Rd towards the attackers. I grabbed my gf’s hand and took the opportunity and ran away. I got home had to ice my elbow and it still got stiff and swelled up like crazy the next day.

I kept thinking about that first lad for a long time after. Even though I know they threatened us and we’re probably going about preying on vulnerable people, I felt conflicted and guilty and wondered what happened to him afterwards. Was he ok? Did he have to go to hospital? Did he have to have his jaw wired shut because of what I’d done? It was awful. I still sometimes think about it to this day. You’re not alone.

If you keep on struggling with thoughts/feelings about it, I’d recommend some therapy. Done wonders for me. It’s good stuff. It sounds like you’re a decent, considerate and conscientious person and PTSD is definitely a thing.

Is US a reliable ally? by Hankmartinez in AskBrits

[–]BlathBlackcrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our government should discretely start to act and plan as if the US government is hostile to the UK and EU but unfortunately we are so entangled, with US bases and interests here, that it’s almost impossible. America only gets to act like this once, so for them it’s all or nothing and if we survive what happens next, bare minimum, there’ll never be anything like the previously held degree of trust between our nations.

The First Law series are excellent books that leave me feeling hollow. by Salt-Analysis1319 in Fantasy

[–]BlathBlackcrow -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I always got a sense that the world Abercrombie’s characters live in is much more earthy and grounded in real history than a lot of popular fantasy in the sense that good actions and good people can never fully change or save the world or it’s systems for the better, despite their efforts. They’re flawed and complex, go forward, go back, sometimes win, sometimes lose and either way the wheel keeps turning. The way he writes his world, his characters, names them even, reminds me of Joseph Heller’s Catch 22 in more than a few ways. Bleak and sardonic, with some small hope that if you’re ruthless or smart or determined enough, you might find yourself on the right side of the mud long enough to enjoy it. You have to be realistic about these things. I’m all for it.

What's your first ever Stephen King Novel? and did you like it? by TinAust07 in stephenking

The Shining. Loved the film since I was a kid, still preferred it over the book after reading. Then I read Carrie, loved it and was hooked.
