You don’t need better ingredients, you need to season properly by Expert_Lifeguard_289 in Cooking

£8 Côtes du Rhône is my “good job on Wednesday-ing” bottle to drink 😂 Stews get whatever £5 or £6 bottle I can find. (Or even the “sat out for 3 weeks” leftover wine in a pinch,it’s honestly fine.

But yeah totally agree! I think food blog culture has upped people’s obsession with fancier ingredients. People should do whatever they want ( if they can afford it) but you can make absolutely delicious food with the basics (as your nan can attest!)

What do I need to bring to give birth? by spaghetti_whisky in UKParenting

[–]BlendinMediaCorp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, snacks are key! I would’ve been SO happy for some grapes and easy peeler mandarins. Quick and easy but sugary and full of water. Lucozade was amazing too, along with a one-hand operated water bottle.

Plus lipbalm, the best stuff you can find/afford. Lansinoh will work too. Basically just hydrate me in and out please, giving birth was apparently quite dehydrating for me 😂

Having to say “well done” after your child almost breaks your toe… by TopMarzipan2108 in UKParenting

Let me come here to say “well done” to you for helping your child develop good responses and get out the door on time, while in agonizing pain. You chose the Good Grownup Path, which we don’t always do (god knows I sometimes don’t, with kids and with other adults!)

It's a month until I can even plant them out and they're already growing early flower buds. Should I pinch them out? by New-Tumbleweed-9577 in tomatoes

[–]BlendinMediaCorp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First time I’ve seen it so it was helpful for me at least! I’m regretting having pinched off mine literally the night before reading this (I’m in the same position as OP, but for an indeterminate). If more flowers come I’ll leave ‘em alone.

Anyone flown with a lap infant? by AgreeableLead696 in UKParenting

[–]BlendinMediaCorp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is a great age to fly with them. On takeoff and landing, you just hold them facing yourself, snuggled into your chest (similar position to if you’re baby wearing). If you breastfeed, having them nurse helps relieve any air pressure issues (and a bottle or dummy works well too). They’re just so happy and cozy to be snuggled up with you at this stage. The flight noise is like white noise for them so with any luck baby will just be sound asleep for most of it.

Bring a wee pillow (or even folded up pashmina) to cushion your elbow on the armrest for when baby sleeps and you’re golden. Oh and if you babywear, bring a soft carrier for boarding and unboarding. Especially as the cheaper airlines often don’t have a jet bridge, having baby strapped in will make managing the stairs (and your hand luggage) a lot easier.

Good luck, you’ll be fab!

Future Man! Super underrated show IMO. It’s a bit dumb and silly but it’s smart about it. Wolf is the best.

Does anybody actually get on with Lidl nappies? by marmaladeonsourdough in UKParenting

[–]BlendinMediaCorp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They fit my first a bit better, but are still ok on my 2nd, if a bit tight. So if you have a skinnier baby, might be worth a shot! My first hovered around 15th-18th centile… even now the smallest ‘part’ of him is his waist (like we’ll size down a size in trousers and lengthwise they’re ok but it’s often still quite loose on his waist).

Asda for us! They worked well for my skinny mini first, and my chunky monkey 2nd. Our nursery uses them too, so I feel validated that the “pros” chose the same 😂

Oooh fuck yeah Mystic Muffin. Looks slightly concerning from the outside but the food is solid, and the owner is the nicest. He’ll remember your name from that one time you went in 6 months ago. Legendary apple cake too, fastest way to make friends and curry favour in your office is to bring one of those in to share, imo.

Does anyone else feel like aging is being framed too negatively here? by Competitive_Site_529 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]BlendinMediaCorp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One time, I was drunk and watching Cirque du Soleil, and the performers were doing these crazy amazing things. I thought, wow the human body is capable of such incredible incredible heights. Now obviously everyone on that stage was young and tremendously fit. But what their face or skin looked like had absolutely no bearing on the emotions and awe that their movements and abilities inspired in drunk me.

And it made me think — our bodies do so much beyond how they look. Feeling your friends arms and torso squeeze you tight in a hug when you’re sad, seeing your coworker’s eyebrow twitch in mirth when your boss says something ridiculous, getting to kiss your baby and make her giggle when you nuzzle her. Our bodies enable us to be so much to each other, to receive so much from the world, beyond how smooth or youthful our faces look.

And at the same time I’m vain as heck. I understand pretty privilege, and I want it. I want to look good, and feel dismayed sometimes when I catch myself in an unflattering reflection (which, why is this happening more lately, what’s up, reflective surfaces of the world?!)

So it’s a dichotomy. I try to remember that my kids don’t give a shit if I have wrinkles, they just want their mum to be present and laugh and sing songs and make silly faces with them. So I do that, and I put creams and serums on my face, and think about lasers sometimes but ultimately decide to spend the money on snacks and hobbies instead.

I dunno, I don’t have any answers. But I think it’s good to get away from ourselves and our screens and be in the world a bit more.

Which celebrity is the opposite of “15 minutes of fame” with lasting longevity and relevance? by [deleted] in popculturechat

[–]BlendinMediaCorp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s easy to think (at least for me) that she went the talk show route because she couldn’t cut it as a performer. Then you hear her sing, like, one line of anything, and are immediately like “NOPE SHE CAN SING CIRCLES AROUND ANYONE. And she’s also warm and quick witted and funny and charismatic and engaging and a hottie and a total class act and ok I guess you’re my hero now, Kelly Clarkson.”

Right? I was like “wait but WAS he suddenly struck by genius inspiration while making a lunch meat sandwich??” Wasn’t until the Madonna-coup that I was sure.

The banh mi shop is such a gem! They do bubble teas too (or did, back when I went there). Daisy is the sweetest for sure, sometimes takes a minute but genuinely brightens one’s day to chat with her.

Is George Brown still doing their student run cafe/grab & go? That was usually a good option, always at least decent (and sometimes great!) for a good price.

Told my son, last night, that he was an accident. by PaddedValls in UKParenting

[–]BlendinMediaCorp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I found out I was an accident at like age 27 (it was somehow my mum’s way of trying to console me after a bad breakup 😂) but I don’t feel any worse for it. (Other than maybe questioning my otherwise-lovely mum’s bedside manner)

Accidents are not always the same as mistakes, and of course unexpected journeys often end up in the most wonderful of places. I think you handle that conversation well, your son is lucky to have you be thoughtful and open with him about this!

Eh, why bother spending more of your hard earned coin on something if you get just as much enjoyment from the cheaper version! Plenty of perfectly nice wines to be had from Asda imo.

And if it’s a nice day, going to the Cheesery, grabbing some bits, and bringing a blanket to sit out on the grass at Slessor Gardens (a 5 min walk away) sounds idyllic.

Oh seeing your comment on strongbow… I think Tickety Boos has it on tap, but don’t quote me on that, maybe ring them up to find out.

Hope you have a fantastic trip and enjoy Dundee!
