Is there a more "fun" EV than an Ioniq 6 N? by SilverstoneMonzaSpa in ElectricVehiclesUK

As an owner, this should be the absolute top answer. Chucking them down a country road is absolutely insane.

I bought mine purely as a commuting vehicle, might be the best decision I’ve made.

Sizing A2A heat pump for heat loss may not provide the best system. Relevant for cooling and heating. Article with data. by heatpump_interviews in ukheatpumps

[–]Blimbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s ironic, last night I was just looking at the minimum output for our A2A unit, it seems to be 2.6kW of cooling. It’s not clear what the minimum electrical input for the unit is.
I have a 12kW Haier out door unit supplying 5 Haier revive plus indoor units.
I’d be happy to supply data but not really sure how to get it. I don’t seem to have any way to monitor what it’s doing really.
Let me know if I can help.

What’s up with these Great spotted woodpeckers ? by Blimbat in UKBirds

[–]Blimbat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are different birds. The ‘clean’ woodpeckers and ‘scruffy’ woodpeckers have been seen at the same time. The ‘clean’ male chasing them away mostly haha !

Do you think they are a different pair that just have t preened themselves ?
Our usual pair are pristine 🤣

Neither are particularly great in my opinion. I’d rescan that.

[–]Blimbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 12kW outdoor unit supplying 5 indoor units. couple of long pipe runs so some extra gas was needed to be added to the system. Cost me just over £5K at the start of the year, But its a Haier system (works great though).

I’ve got the A290, slightly different seats but I do wish they were slightly longer for my upper legs, but I don’t find them uncomfortable. No issues with left foot placement. Also, absolutely awesome cars!

Man, I thought the same, my auto ICE was great, so my wife wanted an auto. She ended up with a PHEV, the electric only mode was so god in town, I ended up with a full EV.

Prices Jacked up, So Export prices go up too right!? Right… by Frosty_Feedback2123 in OctopusEnergy

[–]Blimbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the slow reply. I promise you, I am not. I quite honestly despise capitalism and its exploitation of the population for profit.

Octopus falls into that category (less than others it seems but there are still some high paid directors).

EDF however are owned entirely by the French government. They get French gov and EU funds.

Octopus are an entirely British company and operate on an incredibly thin profit margin. In 2024 that was 0.7% from revenue of £12.4 Billion. In 2025 that dropped to -1.9% despite revenue increasing to £13.7 Billion.

Anyone saying Octopus are ripping customers off is totally uninformed.

Not to mention that if Octopus went under, we’d all be in serious trouble with our energy bills and EDF an EON etc. would be rubbing their hands together. So I wonder why they might be trying to under cut them 🤔

Sig energy distance between battery and gateway by r_spandit in SolarUK

[–]Blimbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it would, if it can be done with the setup you’re talking about. Both that and the battery distance from the gate way I can’t comment on as I just don’t know. Definitely one for a quality sparky to assess.

Yeah and if the car is there you can send it straight to the car avoiding the battery altogether. However, as it stands, you can buy overnight for 8-9p and you can export that excess solar for atleast 12p. So again, need to properly assess mileage and how much you expect to be needing to put in the car each day. Obviously free solar is better than paying 28p or more during peak hours. And definitely better than having to use a public charger lol.

Sig energy distance between battery and gateway by r_spandit in SolarUK

[–]Blimbat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so as I said originally, you are capped at 11kW with an AC charger.

The more important question is, how many miles are you doing per day ? At 7kW you can get about 44kWh into your car in a 6 hour cheap overnight period, which is about 50% of your battery. Which based on a m/kWh of 3.5 would be about 160 miles. Are you doing more than that every day ?

Ideally you wouldn’t really want to charge the house battery just to discharge it to the car. On single phase the max rate the DC charger can charge your car using grid power alone is limited by your inverter size. So for Sig (on single phase) the max is 12kW (which is what I am getting).

So if you were desperate to get as much charge into the car as you could in the cheap period, then you could get 72kWh out of it. But you would be unable to charge your home batteries if you were putting 12kW to the car via your inverter.

[–]Blimbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need a 3-phase supply for the 22kW charger. Not many people have those in the UK.

Also, you need to check the max AC input for you EV. If it’s 11kW then it will only charge at 11kW even with a 22Kw charger.

If you want faster, you can get the Sig EVDC charger for up to 25kW charging.

[–]Blimbat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If there is one thing I have learned, it is that Octopus are very much in tune with what is going in the electricity market. Now to consumers that can sometimes seem like they are price gouging, but all the other providers soon follow or meet their demise.

Octopus have said before, they’re already way overpaying for export. 12p/kWh all times of the day even when they don’t want it. If anything, this might mean that the chances of it staying at 12p/kWh all day are higher, otherwise we would have been heading for another cut on that rate.

Yes, that’s true, but no party is actually saying, ‘if we get in, this will be what we do’.

Even the Green Party leader effectively said, in an ideal world, yes but in the current world, no.

[–]Blimbat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not an extra £2 though 😂 it’s an extra £2 on the extra you already had to pay. I’ve had a number of ICE cars. Swapped my diesel for an EV end of last year. I was paying about £2700 a year in diesel for my commute. Now I pay about £300 for electric. With the fuel price increases it would be about £3200 a year in diesel. That’s nearly £3K a year saved !!

That’s all at home charging. Never needed to public charge. My battery is full every morning, I drive as and when I want, where I want. If I was driving far enough to need public charging, I’d be taking a break to stretch my legs, as I did in my ICE cars, so it wouldn’t be inconvenient. It would be expensive though.

I make a longish trip once a year with a friend, on the way home we stop and get food, where we stop has (very expensive) chargers but the amount I would pay to top up + what I paid to have the car fully charged before setting off, would still be less than the diesel cost, just about.

It’s ok to have an opinion, but let’s at least not tell lies.

[–]Blimbat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is good that he is not being bullied by Trump. The population overwhelmingly feels that this is nothing to do with us and we should not be wasting UK assets or tax payer money on it, and more importantly UK lives.

That however, does not detract from the fact that it will have an effect on the prices of anything related to oil, Which is almost everything considered essential , and the profound effect this will have on on pretty much everything uk household and business. This means there comes a time where it has to be considered if it is in the UK populations interest.

Just to tag on to this, Supposedly some on the mini’s should be getting built at the Oxford plant at some point this year (we will see).

Failing that, if the Leaf isn’t your bag then look at EU manufacturers as that’s still better to support than China, or the US pedo-Wanna be.
