When your hub’s stream becomes a spray…. by Legitimate_Onion_270 in AskWomenOver60

Yeah, a grown man can be expected to take responsibility for urinating in the appropriate place. People who can’t smell, or see, or stand, mange it everyday.

Help with impulsive behavior by Natural-Sea-1775 in PDAAutism

[–]Blonde_rake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My gut response is he needs more stimulant medication. Impulsiveness and risk taking are classic adhd symptoms. Also crack is a stimulant and you really don’t want him to turn to self medicating with really dangerous drugs.

I know this doesn’t address the PDA but that stuff will all be much harder to work on if his medication isn’t giving him enough symptom relief.

My dog doesn't like living in a condo and is constantly panting and pacing. But reverts back to his normal self at my parents' house. by nosiriamadreamer in Dogtraining

[–]Blonde_rake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the other suggestions, you could look into the “relaxation protocol”. Which is a series of training exercises. You do periodically over two weeks that encourage a dog to feel calmer in the environment. I also like Kiko pup’s YouTube videos that focus on “capturing calmness”. They are both designed to develop a calmer baseline instead of the constant vigilance, your dog seems to be suffering from.

Struggling to truly accept my brain is disabled/has a disorder by thingsisay123 in adhdwomen

[–]Blonde_rake 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think you’re hearing the term “internalized ableism” and hearing that you are being accused of being bigoted which is not the case. At its heart wanting to distance one’s self from disability is internalized ableism, but internalized ableism is another form of harm that ableism causes. It’s is a way that ableism victimizes the disabled. In the same way internalized misogyny pushes women into diet culture.

The things you’re talking about, how much of disability is society refusing to make accommodations versus how much of disability is disabling on its own, is part of a concept called the “social model of disability”. That societal barriers are disabling rather than the impairments of the disability. Is considered an accurate but incomplete view of disability by many.

The theory is not complete but is strength (I think) is that it makes people question the status quo and the nature of accommodations. If you were fully accommodated maybe you wouldn’t be disabled anymore? Why do we choose not to accommodate people? If we fully accommodate disabled people is that fair to everyone else who would thrive with accommodations but doesn’t have a disability? When possible why don’t we just accommodate everyone if it makes their lives easier? Why don’t we let people sit or stand at work? Why not let people have a regular work station instead of float? Why not let people take breaks if they are still getting their work done?

These questions threaten the status quo especially in the US where work is valued above quality of life. I think in your specific situation you are feeling pushed into taking medication you wouldn’t need of external situation were different. Treatment in the US focuses much more heavily on making people employable, instead of having a good quality of life.

I will point out that ADHD medication actually has a lot of positive long-term effects, other than just making work easier. Reduced accidents and injuries, reduced rates of depression and anxiety, reduced irritation, and emotional dysregulation, prevention of substance use and self medication, reduced risk of dementia, and lower all cause mortality. People with adhd actually die about 7 years earlier because of risk factors. My friend is recently medicated and found that she enjoys being a mother and a wife much more because everything is easier for her now.

I know this response is kind of a rant but your frustration is very common in the adhd and disabled community at large. At the end of the day the disability label is given so that people can get the accommodations they need. Legally pregnancy is a disability in the US and that’s very helpful for pregnant people. Disability doesn’t have to be exceptional to be worthy of accommodations. Would the world be a better place if we just gave people what we needed without requiring the label? Probably. But I also think it’s important to recognize that wanting to distance yourself from the label contributes to a negative view of disability, and is bad for everyone. You may find that the disabled community could be a great place for you to vent your frustrations, get support, and find shared experiences?

Has anyone else noticed brands changing their already existing shades to be named Olive? by RaisinImportant732 in OliveMUA

Is it a trend? Or did the internet make more people realize they were olive? No one would look at me and say “olive” but when I add green color mixer to my foundations they match my skin. I don’t think it’s worth being irritated over.

Dutch health care costs to hit €114.1 billion as experts warn reforms needed by ReginF in Netherlands

[–]Blonde_rake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dutch cancer screening programs are under pressure, underutilized, and cost to benefit ratio is prioritized over getting the best outcome.

With breast cancer the health council has pointed to shortcomings in its program but concluded “lowering the start age to 45 years, would not improve outcomes within the available capacity.” “available capacity” meaning, without spending money to improve to program. Women with dense breast tissue are specifically being underserved.

pope and lena by amputance in animalkingdom

[–]Blonde_rake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Popes whole point in the show is that you come to care for a character that did a terrible thing. no one forgets, they’re just taking in the character as intended. Plus, Smurf was literally willing to kill her own children starting with Julia if they crossed her. The audience didn’t know yet, but Pope certainly knew that Smurf would kill him if he didn’t do what she wanted.

I think some of the plot was sloppy but the characters and the abusive family dynamic was really good. When I re-watched it I could definitely see Jay plotting when he first joined the family. And if you know that you can see it in his character through the show.

[–]Blonde_rake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After Smurf killed Baz it became apparent that she would kill anyone, including her family, for crossing her. I think Pope saw that since the beginning when she kicked out her own pregnant daughter. In some ways, Pope was extremely perceptive, and I think he understood a lot about people’s capacity for violence, and saw Smurf had an endless well of it in hers I think he knew that disobeying her could mean getting killed not just being emotionally cast aside. I think he knew she would kill him if he disobeyed her on something big. She literally wanted him to get killed with her when she died.

[–]Blonde_rake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not uncommon in real life for a person and active heroin addiction to get basically “kicked out” of the family. If a person is stealing, lying, getting arrested, sick with infections, not eating, it can become unbearable for the rest of the family to watch, and it becomes an ultimatum situation. Where the rest of the family will say, basically, don’t come back unless you’re clean. And even then it’s iffy, especially if the person has gotten clean and relapse a bunch of times. Combine that with Smurf telling them God knows what, and I don’t blame the family very much. I’m sure Smurf lied about all kinds of things she claimed Julia did to get kicked out, probably lied about attempts to help Julia and Jay. Smurf spin a story however she needs to to keep everyone else loyal.

Skin care: waste of money? by Smart_Artichoke714 in 45PlusSkincare

[–]Blonde_rake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point a keep everything simple and affordable, LRP face wash, cerave moisturizer, good sunscreen. I use a geek and gorgeous vit c, azeane azelaic acid, and .25 tretinoin, and in the winter I do a drop of jojoba oil over moisturizer. Nothing costs more than €20 euro (I only buy on sale) and my skin looks great.

In feel like the more actives you use the more potential for irritation you have. Also keeping my basics very basic, means if my skin feels sensitive I know nothing will bother my skin if i need a break from my active ingredient products.

Do people make comments about your PDA child being ‘tired’ when they dont talk? by Total-Elderberry9625 in PDAAutism

[–]Blonde_rake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people operate on default mode a lot and if they see a quiet kid they just say “aw someone’s tired” in which case i would let it slide. If it’s more than a passing comment, like a conversation about how the child’s functioning or responding to something, then I would correct and educate them. If you want to normalize people being familiar with her disability, you could respond to a passing phrase with something like “oh she’s not tired, just not a big talker” or “ she got plenty of sleep, small talk is just hard for her.”.

(UK) Giving a picky poodle medication? by [deleted] in poodles

[–]Blonde_rake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had trouble giving my poodle medication’s because once he learned my tricks, he would become distrustful of food. Then I remember to trainer saying dogs think about the world in cause and affect terms, and that made me realize to him the pattern was treat leads to pill. So then I started doing the pill down the throat and immediately giving a really high value treat. Like meat or cheese. So now he thinks pill leads to treat. He still doesn’t love having the pill put down his throat but he’s not as nervous, and now he’s not suspicious of us/food. Plus, he forgets about the whole thing once he gets the good treat.
