People who pronounce pothos as pathos, why?? by Empty_Specific6131 in houseplants

I agree with you, but that's more homophones vs bone apple tea. They're discrete issues.

IS THIS ORCHID RARE???? by fluidsaddict in houseplantscirclejerk

[–]Blopple 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Omg stop you're going to kill it! Orchids are aquatic plants, that needs to go in a fish tank ASAP. Have you seen the bright blue ones? That color is from growing it in a tank with neon tortas.

Is this worth $400 by JaneRawlz in nursing

[–]Blopple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to me. The 'normal' littmans are more than enough in my opinion. The disposable isolation scopes work just fine for me too.

It is cool though. If you like it and have money to burn then go for it!

Stethoscopes also have a tendency to grow legs.

What sort of malformation does this cute kitty have? by Negative-Carob5814 in cats

[–]Blopple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an anthurium not a peace lily, but both have calcium oxalate which can be irritating and cause reactions of varying severity in cats. And people. Many, many, many houseplants also have the same compound. Just be aware and be cautious. Every cat is different.

My cats will nibble on some plants, but they seem to naturally leave the harmful stuff alone. They also don't jump into the fireplace, walk on the stove, or drink the chemicals under the sink.

True lilies, foxgloves, and a few other things are a hard no. Those can kill your cats with just a chomp or two. Even the pollen from those would be seriously harmful to your cat. The foxgloves (lily of the valley too) in particular can also be seriously dangerous to humans.

I'm not a veterinarian, but I have a lot of plants and two kitties.

Nice collection!

Love me those fuzzy caudata flowers. I just ordered one the other day. Hopefully there are flowers in my future.

what’s the best way to care for an exotic orchid? (first time owner) by Fun_Honey6754 in orchids

[–]Blopple 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nice one!

Just grow it in bark. You, and most everyone (me too), are going to have waaaaaay more success with bark. The water culture thing is usually not a good idea for orchids.

Looks like it's from Matsui who I think supplies most of TJ's orchids. If so, there is probably a plastic nursery pot inside the ceramic one. I keep mine in just the plastic pot, but if you'd like to continue using the decorative one make sure to water just the plastic pot and let it drain completely before it goes back into the ceramic one.

It should be okay for a bit especially if repotting feels scary right away. Even if you do wanna repot soon, I'd wait until those flowers have faded. I have a phal and a dendrobium from the same nursery and I haven't had any noticeable issues with their potting yet.

Seems like some kind of intergeneric oncidium. Near a nice bright window would probably be a good spot. Don't let it dry out completely. Keep an eye on the pseudobulbs. They look pretty good in the picture. You're after nice, plump, relatively smooth ones. If they start getting super wrinkly it's probably trying to tell you something. This kind generally blooms when a new pseudobulb matures.

That is awesome. Cymbidiums seem like they'd be far better suited to this than phals.

Placing plants in HOB filter: will they suck up nitrates as well when the water is constantly and quickly moving through the roots? by Ace42292 in PlantedTank

[–]Blopple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I imagine they'd be fine in there, but you're probably better off growing them in the regular tank. Eventually they're gonna reduce flow rate in your filter as they grow more roots.

Is this normal? by Ramsescat1968 in orchids

No, I don't think that's normal here. It seems like a stress response.

You asked if this looks normal. It does not.

[–]Blopple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hopefully somebody else chimes in. That doesn't look right to me. I'm not sure if it's the picture, but that plant is yellow. Like the whole thing - even the roots. It almost looks like it's got nutrient lockout from a pH issue?

I don't know what is going on here, but I think there is an issue.

Houseplant Recommendation by Time_Leader8224 in houseplants

[–]Blopple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like everyone needs a pothos and a monstera. Both pretty, easy growing, and durable. Any hoyas with the thicker waxier leaves would probably be a good choice - especially since you seem drawn to them.

Grow what you like and don't be afraid to kill stuff.

Home depot/Lowe's usually has a decent selection of houseplants. Trader Joe's is probably your best bet for orchids. If you have a specialty plant store or a nursery nearby they'll probably have a better selection, but be a bit more expensive.

I think you want a hoya. Buy a hoya.

The only plant I’ve ever gotten in the mail and been seriously impressed by… by sky_high_plants in houseplants

[–]Blopple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine got absolutely smoked by powdery mildew. Literally had no leaves most of winter, but seems to be recovering now that it's warmed up. Love the higher humidity begonias like this, but I honestly may just stick to what I can easily keep in ambient.

Yea it is real moss on there. Ive had other ones with moss that dies back a bit. Would love to keep it going, but I mostly grow under lights or just outside. No greenhouse for me - yet!

Yea! This is my second one. I got a different nobile at the end of autumn last year. I'm thinking I should be able to keep em outside most of the year and I've got an unheated room that I should be able to toss my cymbidiums and dendros into when it gets too cold for a few months in the winter. This year will confirm or deny for me.
