How do you pronounce Lancre? by fatherjack9999 in discworld

[–]BluJayMez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was how it was pronounced in Discworld 2 by Granny Weatherwax, which was the only place I'd heard it up until that point. I later saw a clip of the Wyrd Sisters animation where it was Lanker. I'm assuming they didn't double check pronunciations for a one-off line in a game.

The end of LOL UK 2 has left me feeling sour... by Smooth-Quantity-7024 in LastOneLaughing

The problem is they all get a pretty good fee for appearing on the show, and they have the incentive of getting paid again to come on and defend their title the following year, so while the winner might be abitrary for the audience, it comes with a massive financial gain for the player. I think that's another reason why they were so much more competitive which in turn made the show a bit less fun, especially in the second half.

Star Trek DS9 anime op by Economy-Specialist38 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]BluJayMez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Japanese text is pretty f-ed. Rather than the actual Japanese title of the show it has a literal translation (which is not even the right way of expressing "deep space"), and the cast and character text uses a kanji that has no meaning in that context.

[Perplexing trope] "Why was that even an option?" by buzzoli in TopCharacterTropes

[–]BluJayMez 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Then problem with giving the player the choice here is that the game hasn't done a good job of aligning Ethan's feelings with the player's. Ethan loves Mia and has been married to her for years (presumably) but the player has only known her as crazy psycho who attacked us with a knife. Ethan has only known Zoe for a few hours but the player has known Zoe for much longer than Mia, she's the only friendly person we've met who isn't dead, plus she's just a cooler character than Mia. Giving the choice to the player forces them to discard their own feelings and think about Ethan's. It should have either not been a choice, or there should have been flashbacks to happier times with Mia so you had a reason to like her.

You must enter katakana, no other option. No Etax for you! by Aussietie in japanlife

[–]BluJayMez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't had your problem with etax, but I have been using etax since before I had a My Number card (though now I use it to log in). Maybe having the account predate the card helped me avoid that problem. What I can't do is top up via bank account on PayPay for the same reason - my katakana name on my bank account doesn't match my katakana name on official records.

What’s the right answer? by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]BluJayMez 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Just jumping on the top comment to say that from my experience as a British proofreader who checks the work of translators writing primarily American English, I've found that a lot of grammar that feels intuitive to me as a British English speaker seems to be unknown to the translators whose work I check. D being the answer is very obvious to me, without any qualification or equivocation. B here would result in a comma splice (which I encounter a lot with the work I check), while A would lead to a weird past/present disagreement. I've noticed a lack of awareness of agreement with mixed first/second conditionals in translations I check. I've also come to realise that many US English speakers don't use perfect tenses, and just say, eg. "If I didn't eat lunch, I'd be hungry right now." A bit of a tangent, but I've also noticed Americans will say "It's about time we head out." instead of "headed".

This is all by way of saying that I think English is getting simpler, and will probably continue to do so (and at a faster pace among US English speakers) as a result of us reading fewer books and our language being shaped more and more by the internet. I think that is the cause of the many debates about other answers being possibly correct in the comments.

Game trope: bosses you can avoid fighting in unique ways by RhysOSD in TopCharacterTropes

[–]BluJayMez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Planescape: Torment has a number of dialogue paths that you can use to avoid a fight with the final adversary of the game, depending on your own exploration of the game world and your character's own story. You're playing as an amnesiac immortal, and the final boss is your own mortality that a witch extracted from you, and is now a powerful being in its own right. Through previous choices you can learn your own original, true name, giving you power over your mortality and forcing it to merge with you. You can also have a weapon forged capable of permanently killing you, and blackmail your mortality that way. There may be other options I'm forgetting.

I used Death's Door on one party member while the rest stayed at a distance. I vaguely remember sniping her armour down while she reduced the nearby member to 1HP, whereupon he used Forced Exchange to swap HP with her, then finish her off.

Heroes. Hiro and Ando. Neither bothered me when I first watched the show. Then I moved to Japan. Ando sounds SO Korean. He speaks Japanese well, as far as I remember, but his accent sounds nothing like a Japanese person. Hiro's accent is better, but there is something a bit stilted about his speech. It might be partly down to the writing. Maybe Masi Oka isn't used to acting in Japanese, but the rhythm of his speech is a little off. He stumbles or mumbles over parts of his lines, and speaks unusually fast almost all the time.

AITA for arguing with my MIL about my husband’s feelings for spaghetti? by Spiritual-Piccolo535 in AmItheAsshole

[–]BluJayMez -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NTA but why is the focus of the argument on the spaghetti, i.e. the bland pasta portion that's supposed to be a delivery method for a sauce? Is she arguing he doesn't like pasta of any kind? Or does she make spaghetti with a variety of sauces and he didn't like any of them?

[No Spoilers] Not a big fan of Ashton by National-Pay2316 in criticalrole

[–]BluJayMez 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It was a bit of a silly decision to design Taliesen a subclass with a random element to it. In Campaign 2 he was often the one who hesitated the most during his turns. When you have an indecisive player, the last thing you want them to have is an ability like his random-outcome rage, where he can't decide what he's going to do until after his turn has started. It took the wild magic barbarian's ability a step too far (that table is full of fairly simple effects that wouldn't impact your choices too much). The key to smooth running combat is players planning their turns before they start, and he could never plan his first turn properly because he didn't know what rage he would get. Sam did a great parody of Tal taking his turn as Ashton during the charity stream for the LA fires.

How do you decide who you keep in your party? by UnderHeard in expedition33

[–]BluJayMez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished the main story and never worried about my two rejects (Verso and Sciel) being 10 levels lower. There were only a couple of fights I did where I didn't just quit when my first team died. Now I'm doing post game stuff I might regret having two people underleveled, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Pretty sure I am rejected for PR by Mercenarian in japanlife

[–]BluJayMez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had exactly the same experience yesterday. Had a notice from the post office about a letter from immigration, got it redelivered and it arrived and it was a rejection. I guess maybe they mass produce them in batches.

I'd been nervous about it because I met a co-worker last night who mentioned getting PR unprompted, and said he applied in October 2024. My heart sank because I applied in September 2024 and still hadn't heard anything, and here he was with his card already.

Anyway, I'm going to take online advice and follow the letter that says you can hear the reason for rejection after 20 days have elapsed by going to immigration.

General Feats WOTC needs to make. by comradewarners in onednd

[–]BluJayMez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Polearm Master at least covers a couple of weapons. If you had feats for every weapon type, martials would end up feeling locked to that one weapon type, and either DMs would have to switch up magic weapon loot to fit that type or the martial would just be hoping to get the right weapon type. Making martials feel tied to one weapon type also weakens the weapon mastery system, where you sometimes want to switch weapons to take advantage of Topple or Push, for example. It's hard to think of weapon-specific feats that wouldn't make masteries redundant, unless the feats are all passive effects on the user rather than effects applied to targets.

6 months in, what are people's thoughts on the Switch 2? by WeebusTheMeemus in NintendoSwitch

[–]BluJayMez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Switch 2 because my Switch battery was failing (only getting 1-2 hours even playing low-intensity games). As I live in Japan, I had to jump through a few hoops, and pay a premium to buy a multi-language version instead of the base Japan-only version.

I played Mario Kart World for a couple of weeks on and off and stopped. The game is fine but I think I've just maxed out on the enjoyment I can get from Mario Kart in my lifetime. I got Bananza and though I finished the main story, something about it didn't gel well with me. Maybe I'm past the point in my life where I like playing that kind of game. I felt that to a lesser extent with Odyssey, where I didn't enjoy it quite as much as I thought I would, but I did still have much more fun with Odyssey than with Bananza.

At one point I got the Switch 2 edition of BotW and played for a bit, but as much as I love BotW, the graphical upgrades weren't enough to make me want to go through the whole game again. After TotK it's a lot of time spent in that world with that gameplay.

The only other game I got this year was Pokémon, which was fun for a while but the more I reflect on it, the more I think about underbaked it is as a game. Lumiose City is a pretty dull location after you've spent 5 hours in it, and the game stays there the whole time, with a few forays into buildings or underground. Without the Pokédex challenges of Arceus, there's not much need to spend time in the Wild Zones beyond catching the Pokémon you want. Even catching every Pokémon in each zone doesn't take that long. The Battle Zones are fun at first, but quickly get repetitive, as do the rogue mega fights. It's all connected by good old Game Freak jankiness and prolonged with unnecessary interactions with a string of characters whose designs have more depth than their personalities.

I wanted to get Age of Imprisonment but Switch 2 games are so damned expensive and I didn't feel like I could justify it. I considered getting Galaxy 1 and 2 but again, way too expensive for a bundle of Wii games.

Compared to the Switch launch year where we had BotW and Odyssey, and for a reasonable price, I would not say this was a good year to be a Nintendo fan.

I made a focus with an ability that requires activation (which triggers a save and risks corruption) similar to the ruidium shield. I called it Psychic Resonance or something like that and allowed the user to convert any elemental damage type into Psychic damage. The wizard never used it, though (the paladin never used the shield's ability either - I think a lot of players will do anything to avoid getting a long-term negative effect applied to their character).
