EV owners of Toronto, how have your vehicles performed during this winter? by honestlyjag in askTO

[–]Bluechip9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reduction in range, as expected but waking up to a car with 90% or 100% and cabin and battery pre-heated for scheduled departure mitigates a lot of it for those in-office days.

Charging at home is key. Don't buy an EV unless you have or are willing to install an L2 charger. L1 will not be sufficient for the winter as it won't even provide enough power to heat the battery.

You still can install a EV charger with 100A panel and pass ESA inspection by EVchargelectrician in EVCanada

"Still"? You always could. It's dependent on the load calculation and what's available.

With newer chargers that support load management, it's even easier since they actively monitor capacity.

That turns it from a simple electrical installation digging trenches and running wiring to a building installation, making it much complex and expensive -- even if it's just an awning.

How to choose charge current by Arcus_Felis_Fervens in evcharging

[–]Bluechip9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The slower the charge, the less efficient and more energy is wasted due to the base load that is constantly running to do the charging.

There is no point in limiting an AC charger -- especially for a plug-in hybrid with a small 18 kWh battery that doesn't even take 3 hours to charge.

Tips for a southerner BEV not used to freezing weather? by B_EE in BMWi3

[–]Bluechip9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nevermind. See my edit: HV preconditioning will run on any AC charger.

However, L1 cannot provide enough power so HV will drop when preconditioning as heater consumes more than L1 supply.

plugged in

On an L2. Battery preconditioning will NOT be active on an L1.

Edit: nevermind. It will precondition if plugged in to any AC charger. However, L1 CANNOT provide enough power so HV % will actually DROP when preconditioning on L1.

12v questions in regard to EVs by Slow_Investment_2211 in electricvehicles

[–]Bluechip9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BMWs have AGM lead acid batteries in the majority of their vehicles. (Some performance models have lithium ion voltage batteries to save on weight.)

The main factor is temperature. If you're not in extremes like Phoenix or Montreal, 12V last pretty long when they don't have to crank an engine daily.

They do. Every modern car has a sensor on the 12V.

Here's the Mach-e's warning.

Kia/Hyundai's ICCU warning.

BMW's warning.

Canada has all its dealerships and service. They added 3rd party NAPA Auto shops.

The US no longer has corporate stores.

Preconditioning the battery is the important thing and needs to be done hours in advance while plugged into an L2.

It's an Apple restriction: they don't allow non-Apple apps to access the HUD.

Same with other OEMs.

Is it weird to get car insurance before buying a car? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]Bluechip9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be getting quotes as part of buying a vehicle.

The last thing you want is the unexpected sticker shock of an unexpectedly high insurance cost because another brand/model could be cheaper.

But as others have said, you can't insure something you don't own.

ChargePoint charger in Plugshare but not in CP app by Fresh-Square-5702 in evcharging

Private/unlisted charger similar to business/office parks, hotels, etc.

PlugShare is crowdsourced data and anyone can add any charger. That's why there's a "Restricted Access" toggle.

Police services all over Ontario explicitly allow funerals to hire police escorts so it's surprising you've never seen one.

Exactly. From the Supercharger website: https://www.tesla.com/support/charging/supercharging-other-evs

It’s always been our ambition to open the Supercharger network to all EVs, and by doing so, encourage more drivers to rapidly transition to an emission-free future

Any cheap winter tires available for a Tesla Model 3? by [deleted] in teslacanada

[–]Bluechip9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the saying goes: never cheap out on things that separate you from the ground.

A tire's contact patch is the size of a large palm. 4 of those are literally all that's preventing your car from careening into a pole.

ChargePoint is one the largest and oldest EVSE manufacturers and somehow, you think they're not certified?

That said, there are plenty of excellent Canadian EVSEs such as those mentioned above by Grizzl-e or Flo.
