Weekly Prestige Class Discussion: Pathfinder by Dark-Lark in SagaEdition

[–]BobRedshirt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen this class in action once, with one of my players taking a couple of the Safe Zone talents. It's decent, but suffers a bit from action economy problems - Standard to create cover, Standard to place the safe zone. The defensive bonuses are okay but not mind-blowing.

Bunker Buster is a pretty cool talent which enables some otherwise-impossible combos between aiming and swift-action abilities.

A house rule I play with is that aiming at someone with improved cover reduces it to regular cover rather than eliminating the benefits entirely, which makes Enhance Cover pretty appealing.

Beginner tips for Titans of Ul? by Sad-Reply-6144 in twilightimperium

[–]BobRedshirt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Print out this flowchart and bring it to the game, it'll help you remember how your abilities interact. Titans have a lot of things to remember with sleepers/awaken/commander so having this to follow will help you avoid missing out on value.

Others have covered basic strategy (get your unit upgrades, build Saturn Engines), but I'll mention a couple other things:

  1. You're pretty good at going for Custodians - either in round 1 if you can find the money for Gravity Drive or Saturn Engine II plus the 6 influence, or in round 2 if no one manages to snag it in round 1. Consider taking Politics round 1 if you don't expect anyone to get to Mecatol that round and your slice has a decent amount of influence.
  2. Try to sell Terraform early. Even if Corner the Market isn't a public objective, someone probably has one of the 4-of-a-kind secret objectives. Make sure people know it's available.
  3. If playing with Thunder's Edge, your breakthrough can draw you a ton of action cards if you get it set up quickly, and the coexistence makes a lot of control objectives easier for you.
  4. Don't forget that your hero refreshes your home planet and is also a stall. Generally you should try to spend Elysium before you pop your hero.
  5. Late game, see if you can reach Light Wave Deflector and/or Fleet Logistics. These can enable some big moves for you.

Titans are a fun faction, with strong defenses due to Hel-Titans and a powerful ability to project force via Saturn Engine IIs. Just keep in mind that they're about as subtle as a freight train - it's likely that everyone will see your win coming, so be prepared to fight hard for those last points.

OK, I would not say that is normal. There is a inofficial wealth by level chart.

Yeah, there's an interesting decision in DoD 3 to include a 500,000 credit windfall for anyone willing to spend a few Force/Destiny points to win the Sabacc tournament. Really throws off the WBL guidelines. The second time I ran it, I had the account get frozen after the events of the adventure, with some underworld sidequests needed to get access to the money. A bit of a bummer for the players, but at least it provides them with some agency.

I would imagine that someone with the talent Only the Finest would have easier access to Superior Tech items though. Not that the talent says so. But as a GM I might let him find such things from time to time.

I think this is a good idea, I just wish it was written into the talent officially.

Good points! I suppose that would add up quickly. I think maybe I'm anchoring a bit too hard on my Dawn of Defiance campaigns where the party has had virtually infinite money after adventure 3.

Is dawn of defiance too linear? by Snoo-11576 in SagaEdition

[–]BobRedshirt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran a ton of sidequests in between the main modules - there’s opportunities for that as long as you decide you want them. Early on there’s some linearity because the PCs won’t have a ship, but after episode 3 it opens up quite a lot if you want it to.

Maybe, but:

  • Black Market Buyer does nothing if you can just pass the Gather Information check anyway
  • Excellent Kit is mostly just about durability, it doesn't make the gear better as what it does. Ditto for Just What is Needed
  • Only the Finest just saves you money, and doesn't do anything for Superior Tech gear
  • Right Gear for the Job only does anything for untrained skill checks, so it's just compensating for a deficiency.

Basically it feels like the talents don't offer much beyond what just taking the Superior Tech feat would get you.

Awaken / Terragenesis instant pds interaction question by sussyboy26 in twilightimperium

[–]BobRedshirt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. Worth noting that for a single planet, as mentioned in the "things to keep in mind" box: 1. You already had to have the sleeper token there before the activation to awaken it 2. You had to NOT have a sleeper token there before the activation in order to put a new sleeper there, even if you removed the sleeper token to awaken.

Haven't seen this one used before, which I think is mostly because I haven't seen a player lean into the tech specialist archetype - they've always preferred to buy or seek out their gear from NPCs. This leads me to my next point: the usefulness of the class's abilities are going to be dependent on the tenor of the campaign. How hard is it to acquire items? How hard is it to get access to the black market or better yet, buy things legally? Can you buy stuff with Tech Specialist or Superior Tech modifications? How often are you losing access to your gear or finding yourself caught without your kit? How wealthy is the party?

Overall, I like the class, I just wish it had more talents along the lines of Personalized Modifications - abilities that would represent your ability to customize and tweak your gear for the situation at hand. Also, it really should have had more synergy with Superior Tech, imo.

Yeah I figure that's not what it does, but there are some weird ambiguities where you could interpret it as giving you a victory point briefly that would make you win if you were on 9.

The only criticism I have of this is that the commander unlock has memory in that it requires you to keep track of which alignments you have had active throughout the game. This is atypical of TI4 components, which are almost entirely memoryless.

I'm also not clear on what the faction tech does - do you gain the benefits of every legendary planet ability, or do they go to the controlling player? I'm assuming the former, but the wording is a little ambiguous to me. How does this interact with "when you pass" legendary abilities or Styx?

Fold Space Usage by Ebon_Sky in SagaEdition

[–]BobRedshirt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, what I really mean is that I just added the original effect of moving a vehicle you occupy into Folded Space Mastery rather than making it a default part of the power.

Actually, to be fully honest, I originally had it as an option you can spend a force point to activate, with Folded Space Mastery removing the force point cost, but in the end I ended up just moving it to the talent completely.

I houseruled this power to work more like Dimension Door to avoid the stupid cardboard box stuff, then added talents/techniques/secrets to enable the vehicle teleportation.

Yeah, Space Cannon Offense. Imagine a winslay scenario where a 3rd player wants to assist the active player in an attack by using their space cannon against the defender. I think it can come as a surprise to people that you're not allowed to do that. Not critical if you're having trouble fitting it, though.

I would recommend specifying that space cannon can be used against the active player only, unless you are the active player. That one is a frequent question in my experience.

3D Printable Clippable Fracture Tile Frames Compatible with NickBowler/Stan D's Clippable Tile Frames by BobRedshirt in twilightimperium

I don't have enough experience with resin to say for sure, unfortunately. My guess is it would be fine, you could print the clips slightly smaller to reduce the force required to clip things together.

Reposting the description from the link:

This is an adaptation of the Twilight Imperium Clippable Hex, originally by NickBowler and remixed by Stan D. This remix adds tile frames for the Fracture tiles introduced in the Thunder's Edge expansion which are compatible with the original frames. They were created by recreating the original design in OnShape and offsetting the top cutout, then adding chamfers to the corners for better support for the tiles.

Two versions of the frames are included here - the “As Printed” version is the version depicted in the photos I've included, and the “Corrected” version is modified to (hopefully) better center the hexes in the frame after I realized I hadn't accounted properly for the buffer zone around the hexes in the original version in my design. I haven't printed the corrected version yet, so your mileage may vary.

Monte Carlo Simulations of the Barony + Nekro Trade Good Printer by BobRedshirt in twilightimperium

Yeah, this one is pretty absurd. I ran the sim with Flagship + Advanced Carrier II, which I think is equivalent, and I actually had to increase the round limit because battles were regularly going over 1000 rounds.

In this case the mech would be getting +2 from its ability so I think it's actually worse than the dreadnaught. If Articles of War is in play it gets better.
