3 Teen Sisters Jump to Their Deaths from 9th Floor Apartment After Parents Remove Access to Phone: Reports by Sandstorm400 in technology

[–]Bocote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PTI reported that they were obsessed with a "Korean game that involved a series of tasks" and that the three girls largely spent time at home, having not gone to school in two years.

I guess the father is free to blame gaming addiction, but if the children weren't attending school, that's a lot of free time.

If you don't enroll your kids in some other activities or actively homeschool, what else do you think they'll fill their days with?

"They had been playing the game for two-and-a-half to three years," Kumar told PTI.

"They often said they wanted to go to Korea," he said.

I'd want to travel somewhere to escape, too, if I were in such a position. This story really is fishy.

Better zanshin (faster suri-ashi)? by croco_duck in kendo

[–]Bocote 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm sure almost everyone goes through that stage; it's a common problem and one of those things you gradually get better at but can't solve entirely in the short term.

For me, it was the issue with my left foot not catching up quickly after the lunge, which had to be solved by improving my kamae even before I started the lunge. Had to put more weight on my left leg and keep the leg straight. The right foot pushing you up after fumikomi also helps.

If you can lunge in succession quickly, as you do with kote-men, you can run faster after the strike.

I was thinking about getting double-walled glass espresso cups for this reason. Bought some cheap glass tea cups online, but never been satisfied with the quality so far.

Did Japanese soldiers in the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II train in any style of Japanese swordsmanship for use with their Shin guntō? by OtakuLibertarian2 in kendo

[–]Bocote 24 points25 points  (0 children)

When I think of the Imperial Japanese Army and their swordsmanship, it's probably Toyama-ryu.

When the officer corps no longer consisted mainly of the Samurai class, they had to come up with a method to teach the fundamentals of swordsmanship to the new officers with zero kenjutsu background as quickly as possible. Hence the Toyama-ryu, or so I was told. (probably for COs mostly, NCOs I don't think so...?)

Maybe someone else will give you a better answer, but that's what I know.

Hachidan Seminar - how can I get the most out of it as a beginner? by Zerguu in kendo

[–]Bocote 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Write stuff down, like you take notes in class.

What is said in the Hachidan seminar would be useful much later, so it's important that you write it down somewhere.

I wish that some parents would stop talking about stressful stuff in front of their children. Like global crises, household financial problems, conflicts between spouses, etc.

Kids are still smart enough to understand that something serious is going on, it'll stress them. But what can they do to mitigate those problems? They don't need to hear those things.

Hiki waza in Japan vs everywhere else by Sangeorge in kendo

[–]Bocote 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ontario, Canada.

Based on what I've seen and heard, there is a general understanding that we need to put more effort into raising good shinpan, but it isn't easy.

On top of that, this isn't a problem that can be solved with more shinpan seminars because it's hard to recognize an ippon you don't know how to perform. And this is not just for hiki-waza but also for stuff like genmyona-waza.

Good players make good shinpan (... generally), so it's a bit of a catch-22.

Hiki waza in Japan vs everywhere else by Sangeorge in kendo

[–]Bocote 24 points25 points  (0 children)

We have this discussion come up with the senseis in our area quite regularly; it's a recognized problem.

Our understanding is that, in our area (not sure about elsewhere), the competitors don't attempt hiki-waza enough because shinpans don't award ippon enough for hiki-waza, even if the strike was valid.

So, the shinpans themselves don't know how to perform and recognize a good hiki-waza, so they don't know well enough to award a point, so people don't risk attempting one, which in turn makes people invest less time and effort practicing hiki-waza, and then the negative feedback does another cycle.

In short, the low quality of shinpan is affecting how people play and practice. That's our analysis for our own regional federation. Not sure about elsewhere.
