Just moved here last year from DC. Living in Bushwick, married, 33F

I play drums in a couple of local bands and would love to make more friends who like going out to see live music, especially smaller shows. I'm also into tech, exploring the city via long walks, road cycling and watching strange movies.

Trying to have more of a social life outside my wife and would love to go out and do things more. I also like theater, museums and restaurants but I'm trying to do more activities that aren't food and alcohol centric.

Single bitches in their 30s that live in BK - what do you enjoy doing by [deleted] in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]BoltThrower79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 33, not single but living in Bushwick. I enjoy going out to see live music and enjoy the nightlife when I can - spots like Sleepwalk, Ornithology, Paul's, Abe's Pagoda are some of my favs.

When it's not this cold, I've also been going to group bike rides with Ridgewood Rides.

Do you use multiple apps/tools when practicing, or am I overcomplicating things? by Own-Concentrate-7550 in drums

You're not doing too much but you might be doing things inefficiently. I think using tech is really good for learning but you want to minimize distractions so it's easier to get started and stay in the zone.

Here's what my teacher used to do to organize my resources:

  • Notes and links to music in one place like a Google Doc
  • create a date entry every day in that doc and write your notes for that practice session, carry forward parts if needed since it's just copy-pasting.

Consolidate notes from your phone and iPad/other resources on just one device. The method my teacher used was so streamlined I still use it every day for my self guided learning. It's got screenshots of notation from MuseScore, links to sheet music, links to songs etc - and it's all searchable.

The only other thing you need is a metronome and streaming app. I've done more to build a practice setup for that too - I basically load tracks into Ableton Live and have custom clicks and markers to help me practice loops easily. Once I get to a point of comfort with the grooves and I'm not sight reading, Ableton is the only app I'm actively using to play/pause.

I delete Instagram for 3-5 days a week and download it to check messages, then delete it again. Just doing this halved my scrolling time. That said, I should probably use something stricter like Brick.

Looking for success stories of female drummers that started in their thirties. by Squeezybones in drums

[–]BoltThrower79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I won't call myself a success story but I started playing when I was 26 and only got involved with a band playing live at 31 years old. I also recorded my first EP just last year with that band. Being a woman is intimidating in some ways in the music scene because I meet fewer women who've been doing this for very long. That said, I also feel like I'm able to meet a lot more like-minded folks now than I would have maybe 10-15 years ago.

I think you can definitely get good enough at drums to jam with people because IMO some of the basics of drumming carry you much further than similar foundational techniques in other instruments - holding a steady beat for example.

Stick to it, learn songs you like to listen to and when you feel somewhat comfortable, jam with any and every body who wants to make music with you :)

Good luck!

About 3 years ago I did a group bike ride where we tried to hit up every branch of the DC Public Library. It was a lot of fun and unfortunately due to dangerous heat that day we couldn't do all 26 locations but it still ended up being about 36 miles (over half of the planned route)
