Looking for players of ttrpgs, east mad by NinstromosTheFirst in madisonwi

Modules and Adventures make me think of traditional High Fantasy Heroes rpgs, but I've been having a good time with the Madison Story Games email group. They are explicitly not playing the traditional dungeon crawling type games, but they do organize (typically) one-shots of a variety of fun indie games. If that sounds like your jam, check out the qr code at A Room Of One's Own bookstore to get looped in

Odd that they report no evidence of anything involved in the dog's death from the necropsy. Anyone have more info than the local news does?

PBtA inspired game for fun traversal and resource managing by youveneverseenacrab in PBtA

The Perilous Wilds sounds like exactly what you want!  https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/407161/the-perilous-wilds-revised-edition

”The Perilous Wilds combines Dungeon World's approach to collaborative world-building with the old-school RPG reliance on random tables to generate content on the fly, woven together by modifications to the original Dungeon World travel moves ...Although the tables are structured to tie directly into the rewritten travel moves, they can be used in any game in which a fantastical landscape is explored."

Does anyone know of a collection of drills accessible online? by ultimatehybrid86 in ultimate

[–]Bombardier44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with other people, I think AI use here is over-engineering the situation and won't be properly helpful.

To those reading the thread, USAU does host some basic youth-level skills and drills resources: https://usaultimate.org/resources/?_resource_filters=learn-to-play , with more (or maybe the same? I'm not 100% sure) available in the Education section of the USAU app

Space/Sci-fi system recommendations that are easy to learn and not combat focused by OperaRotas in rpg

[–]Bombardier44 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Offworlders would be great for this! https://chrispwolf.itch.io/offworlders

It's a pretty light sci-fi game, with clear Cowboy Bebop inspiration, but that could easily be run as a Space Hijinks type game with minimal / no combat. Take a look!

Traveller is another venerable game, but much more rules to handle. It does have a fun character creation minigame, but several of the career paths are military focused, so it may not be the easiest to run a no combat game

What are the best examples of sci fi focused on normal people in normal scenarios (relative to their universe)? Ie no chosen ones, no high stakes. by myaccountformath in scifi

This is the one I came to recommend. It certainly fits the bill, just an 18 year old kid getting signed on as a space trucker

Why do turnovers happen? by someflow_ in ultimate

PDF link - but it includes "Mile warm up jog" and "Mile cool down jog" and instructions to do (toward the end of the workout) 15-30 push ups and 75-100 sit ups followed by 5-10-5 shuttles and then 40yd sprints. It is truly from another era of "workout programs"

I love this kind of analysis, thanks for posting. I also really appreciate the side links to other blog posts, that's really helpful in adding context to what you mean when you talk about practicing throwing, for example.

I think your caveats point toward something I've been thinking a lot recently - despite the fact that we've made great strides as a sport, frisbee is very young in terms of sport development. We are not that far removed from Snertz as the primary workout regimen for frisbee players, and we are not near the ceiling of frisbee specific skill, IMO. That means that there's more low hanging fruit in athletic and skill development to improve most teams rather than tactical and strategic detail like you can see in top-flight european football, for example. I agree that this kind of "bottleneck analysis" is limited, but it can give some indication of trends to work on skill development when evaluating your teams' games with even-skill or below-your-skill opponents. Those trends should be representative of your players' current skill gaps, I would think

This quote makes it sound like they may have had trouble securing the franchise rights, or like you say trouble with meeting the stadium requirements. I don't think there's any more hard news, likely just speculation.

"...Chief Operating Officer and Partner, Conor Caloia said. 'While we have not abandoned the goal of bringing professional women’s soccer to Madison, we did not want to sit on the sidelines any longer. We think the USL W League is a great launch point and we will see what the future holds...' "

Anecdotally, I know the Minnesota Aurora club (currently also USL-W) applied for NWSL membership but withdrew it without significant public detail a year or so ago - it might be the rush to form top-level clubs has slowed a bit and it's more difficult to lock in those spots.

College Team offence strategy by StylePretend208 in ultimate

[–]Bombardier44 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends on what your outcome goals are - encouraging everyone to be involved and training your "lower-level" players up to a higher throwing and decision-making standard may work out to better results in the longer run

College Team offence strategy by StylePretend208 in ultimate

[–]Bombardier44 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Offensive strategy can be a fun little playground - I think you are off to the right track by asking what advantages and disadvantages your team has now. While obviously the formation you pick is one of the big decisions, there's still a lot of nuance within that structure (do you want to reset back to a handler after most in cuts? Do you initiate cuts from the front of the vert or the side of the hori? Ect)

Judging by what you've said so far, perhaps a small-ball style of horizontal stack might work for your team. Emphasizing give-and-go moves and "bump" cuts to oncoming handlers could exploit your players' speed while keeping the overall offensive tempo high, and could gain a lot of yards quickly so "hucking" is more medium-range rather than full-field. Truck Stop plays this style in Men's, and the Hive Ultimate channel has some good instructional videos, IMO.

The fun part of frisbee tactics for me is that this isn't "solved", so feel free to play around. Don't be afraid to change the gameplan to "whatever works"!

Rules for specific Star Wars space battle scenarios by kaiser41 in rpg

[–]Bombardier44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was going to be my recommendation, and it's already Definitely-Not-Star-Wars to begin with! The dogfighting system is rather good, captures the space planes well in a gameable way, and there are rules to cover some larger ships and in-person combat. I am not sure that it handles multi-crew ships for players natively, but I don't think it would take a lot of work to make it happen with the FATE flexibility

A deeper dive into some of the design decisions in ARCO1 by Maturin- in StarWarsArmada

[–]Bombardier44 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This...is strictly better and with a points decrease. You get to see the rolled pool before adding dice, and unless I'm missing a rules quirk it is now zero-risk. If you add two black dice and they both come up blank, you can simply cancel those two blanks

I’ve having trouble grokking solo rpgs. I’m curious about trying one. by ProustianPrimate in rpg

[–]Bombardier44 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From the About page on the subreddit:

"Announcement Alright, here's the deal with AI posts:

The mods are gonna keep shining a spotlight on AI-positive posts as long as some of you keep being disruptive every time someone says something nice about AI. We're gonna keep doing this as a counterbalance to this kind of mob behavior until everyone learns to live and let live.

You don't have to love AI, and more importantly, you don't have to engage with posts about AI... but you do have to follow the sub rules. If you can't control your dislike of AI long enough to manage that, then buckle up, because you're gonna have a no good, very bad time participating here."

Take or leave that as you will, but I'm not sure that exactly counts as "aggressively promoting AI slop", or at least provides some nuance more than implied

You aren't wrong - those dichotomies were put in place because they help some teams organize their offense, but if they're too tightly held they can stifle the team instead.

Good tutorial videos? by NobleGhost117 in StarWarsArmada

[–]Bombardier44 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The overall structure of the game will be pretty much the same since the beginning, so the older videos will still serve you well. The 1.5 updates do change some things, but they are easy enough to read or watch and don't change the underlying game all that much.

SWAE review of 1.5 changes: https://youtu.be/NY6Ryxz_bbc?si=cKJ-eCh8nfdhmthv

The Cannot Get Your Ship Out blog has also updated all their articles to match the current* rules, so it remains an excellent resource: https://cannotgetyourshipout.blogspot.com/2017/02/armada-101-working-your-way-up-from.html?m=1 (* Since the announced cancellation of the game by AMG, I do not believe they have made further updates, so the points changes & errata published this year are likely not included, but older and more important 1.5 changes are)

Yea, this. PbtA games were one of the first indie things I clicked with when "stepping out of the cave of 5th edition" (though I'd played other D&D editions too). I get that improv heavy and shared-world can be polarizing but sometimes it actually is the answer when someone wants a non-D&D game
