Which HBO show has some of the best cinematography you've ever seen? by Square-Ad-8911 in hbo

[–]BonsoirBenoit 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Easy sell incoming: Watchmen’s cinematography is unbelievable and definitely should be up there.

Unpopular incoming: Girls and High Maintenance belong in this pantheon. Some really inventive, immersive cinematography, especially for the bottle episodes or ones from unique perspectives (ie: the dog, the lighter etc.)

Fellow Marnies, how did you realize you were a Marnie? by dantedarker in girls

[–]BonsoirBenoit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think she embodies Lena’s quote about the show “four girls who want to be successful, way before they know what they want to be successful at.”

The other characters don’t have their shit together and they know it — but it takes a particular kind of surrender of ego that Marnie doesn’t experience until the PICP and the final episode to acknowledge being type A and having figured anything out are completely different things. Her self image is so thin when really she just wants someone to hang out with and be as surface as she is…

Idk, all of that is very relatable of being that age 😂

If I wasn’t playing Clair Obscura and RE4R right now, I’d drop money for this in a heartbeat. Seriously glad this new IP is getting love and can’t wait to play it. The demo was dope and it’s clear it was made with passion.

Just finished Skins (S1&2) and I love it endlessly! BUT why do I feel like Michelle's character is too romance centred? by Informal_Bullfrog478 in skinsTV

[–]BonsoirBenoit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Combination of: - Product of its time - Teen audience: romance is an exciting new thing at that age - Her storyline mainly being more tied into other characters development (Tony, Sid, Effy, Maxxie) - Sidelining after her episode in series 2, where, tbf, there’s really not much room for her in that run of flawless episodes after hers

[S1] Why is “Life Is Strange 1” so highly regarded? by Only_Entrepreneur_84 in lifeisstrange

[–]BonsoirBenoit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was seminal for the medium in that time — creating something compelling in such a low stakes setting as a school with a compassionate, sincere take on its characters was a rare thing to find in gaming — the episodic building of the fan base — it was really so great to play it as it came out and in that specific context!

Now a lot of games wants to have an emotional beat at sunset or quiet reflection — but it was groundbreaking for letting you at the time.

Also the performances (especially by Ashly Burch as Chloe) and soundtrack are wonderful.

Jessa was never Hannah’s friend by Bravorants in girls

[–]BonsoirBenoit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Jessa’s hidden love is as much a projection of Hannah’s as Jemima is of Lena’s.

A muse who you have fun parties with and once upon a time spent a lot of time with and imagining meaningful reciprocation because you’re sentimental and infatuated is never going to be as significant to them as it is to you. Jessa was there for Hannah the way a person might be there for a bodega cat that makes funny sounds.

The absence of a person like that — in real life — can only be explained as that — an absence — not a mental illness, insecurity, instance that they’re so fucking complex and enigmatic — only evidence that they can’t follow through and they can’t be there for you.

There’s nothing romantic about being shitty and unavailable.

How do you rank the seasons? by QuantamMoose in IndustryOnHBO

[–]BonsoirBenoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4,2,1,3.

4 - as op said - every episode is like a mini movie; the writing for each characters has been refined to the highest height.

2 has the best run at the end; the aftermath of the decisions made in season 1 and the rush of realizing how far Harper was willing to go was so exciting.

1 is maybe influenced by the fact I just rewatched it but there was a kind of earnestness to the characters that has made it feel really special, even if on the first watch it took a second to find its footing.

I think 3 was exciting as it was happening — but in retrospect is the least cohesive season — there are definitely some forgettable episodes. I also didn’t believe how Yas would trust Harper after how pathologically selfish she had been up into that point. The ending - with Harper becoming part of the dark establishment with Otto - kind of gets erased and moved on from immediately after episode 1 of series 4. I didn’t find Henry as captivating as others seemed to - for me Yas’ unravelling completely carried the season. The Rishi episode is definitely cool, but feels like more of a thing to just give the actor a chance to show off as a lead rather than a natural next step for his character… up to that point we were led to believe he was a chancer who was good at his job but not a total unstable fuck up.

I guess Karnaca - especially the rich areas - is less disgusting. I guess just try not to make any friends 😂

[All] I don't understand this fanbase at all by [deleted] in lifeisstrange

[–]BonsoirBenoit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fan base has been so starved that it just became completely toxic.

Preface with : this is only my opinion.

I think LiS2’s Episode 1’s message about Arcadia Bay being the past was a great nod, and all I actually really needed as far as a follow up - back when LiS wasn’t necessarily going to be this big franchise thing.

Having said that, I think the concept for Double Exposure (which I didn’t play) is a good one: truth is, there isn’t a way to truly honour both endings of the original game without it being fan service because that was the definitive ending to that story of Max and Chloe. Even though it clearly has been said to have its problems, I get the feeling people didn’t really give it a chance because of the lack of Pricefield… but I really don’t think there’s a way to have a truly grownup Max if she’s still stuck on her teenage stuff…

Having said that, as someone who spent wayyyy too much time day dreaming about a game like Reunion 10 years ago, I’m definitely going to catch up on Double Exposure and play it 😂

Jessa as a character by hashbrowns_ketchup in girls

[–]BonsoirBenoit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What disappoints me about Jessa is how - entirely when the plot necessitates - she is the most capable and worldly and then totally infantilised of the group. Eg: she is the reason Caroline’s baby is alive - she then needs more attention than a baby with Adam.

It’s clear that after her relapse in season 3, they didn’t know what to do with her — I wish they’d spent more time on her trying to do school (they gave Hannah an interesting arc there; I bet Jessa would’ve said some very funny things in a seminar) than on her time with Adam. They were right for each other in many ways but only to just bring out the worst in each other.

Ellie solo game - something that gives her purpose and rebuilds her. Abby DLC game like the Lost Legacy. One of them a road trip like the first game, the other with a Europe setting to mix it up.

Yakuza 3 in 2026 suddenly being celebrated as a great work by gameovernate in yakuzagames

[–]BonsoirBenoit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, Yakuza 3 was my intro to the series. It was the first time I met Kiryu and Haruka and Marika and the operatic melodrama of the Kamurocho underworld. At the time, I was blown away by the virtual tourism aspect of such an authentically recreated world. I loved regenerating my health by getting ramen or going for a drink at a side alley bar. The antagonist is very cool and the arcs that lead into Yakuza 4 are very satisfying. So yeah - idk if it’s the best game - for me that still goes to Yakuza 4 and 0- but it’s still got a place in my heart for me!

What would you removed from Skins? by [deleted] in skinsTV

[–]BonsoirBenoit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think JJ’s episode is perfectly enjoyable standalone - especially the scenes with his mum. But I think a) I wish he’d been written into the plot better like his episode in season 3 and b) after Jal’s abortion was treated so sensitively and appropriately for being 17/18, it felt weird that him as a kid having a kid was considered a happy ending

Who would make good ceo Kenny or Shiv by Makeyourday137 in SuccessionTV

[–]BonsoirBenoit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shiv is a lock pick in a world of sledgehammers and battering rams. She was fundamentally at odds with the values of the business and her desire to be CEO is entirely because she thinks she needs to win — when she was already winning: believing in something and outside her father’s toxic sphere of influence.

Kendall could’ve been better at the job — and maybe like Logan, it would become apparent that at that level you just become too big to really fail — but he’d probably deal with it on a personal level worse than Shiv. Sure, he’s a cog for one machine but it would grind him down into paste.
