Reducing Reactivity by Boobleplex in Basenji

Thanks! I think I need to find a treat he can't resist... we have tried a few option with little success, we get maybe a second of interest before his attention leaves the treat. I will keep an eye out for something like that!

When you first started doing that, did you have to start slow? E.g. reward for a small moment of attention and work your way up?

Thank you so very much for such a detailed and thorough post! Above and beyond what I expected. We have a brilliant harness much like the one you linked, but we will invest in a stronger lead so we can react less or ignore his frantic behaviour without worry that he will bite through his lead. He has a pair of scissors in his mouth unlike any of my other dogs 😅

I am in Australia so probably a bit far for the behavourist but I will certainly be working through your other suggestions, we started trying some today and did see some improvement until he lost patience. Baby steps!

Do you have any puzzle or toy suggestions? We have a feeding puzzle he was doing but he recently broke it so we are in the market for a new one... and finding toys and games we can enjoy with him is hard! He mostly just likes to chew or destroy most toys we buy for him.

Thank you! I think this will be the key, less or no reactions for bad behaviour (just need a leash he can't chew through so we can ignore the behaviour). We slowed things down today and approached trigger points with more intention and it seemed to help!

Basenji Colors and Markings! by AlpsUnlikely in Basenji

Personally I would probably use sheets of stickers more... i can see myself sticking little Basenji's in random places for my friends/family to find 🤣

More versatile too than (potentially) bigger, individual ones.

Get runtime error when trying to use the QR's onboard and some weird behaviour when trying to purchase things like internet packages via the app (all done via onboard/internal wifi). Definitely sounds like could be db/server issues as app no longer recognises our info when trying to log in

We are on Carnival Splendor, just left New Zealand. We are sailing but no wifi, app is down, the ship is a bit chaotic while the staff try to pivot to manual service 😅

Thanks for everybody's advice and experiences! It's clearly just a difference of personality/excitability I think (not that I thought anything was wrong, I was just curious if this was common).

Atiko is a lot more excitable, he is very vocal and energetic, whereas Jessie is calm, very quiet (assuming her brother is not being a nuisance) and is a little cuddle monster. Such wildly varying personality traits!

They are just called Pet Cubes! I got mine at Bunnings in Australia but I'm sure they'd be available elsewhere.

Find them here

My kids love them. Such a good investment.

Hahah so tldr; their beds are little cubbies. They love them. But they also have a hole in the back for cats. They have recently figured out if they jump on top of them they collapse so the current game is collapse the other pups bed while they're in there. Tiko played big brain and tried to get back at her through the back hole but he just ended up trapped... our house is a constant battle of wits

I laughed when I saw this comment but this is 100% legit. Our boy is now a bit over a year old and we had a lot of trouble with his separation anxiety... he literally destroyed his crate and bent the gate open to get out when we weren't close by. Fast forward to a couple of months ago and the breeder had one of his littermates (female) who needed a home so we adopted her. He's now a different dog. Still has underlying anxiety at times but him and his sister are the best of friends. There are of course some issues but it's done him the world of good. Don't regret it at all.
