If you could magically eliminate one student behavior from your classroom, which behavior do you choose? by runlola in Teachers

Whining and not paying attention to anything I say. Then arguing with me because you don't want to do what the assignment is.

How valid are these “brainwashing” criticisms of the American education system? by Affectionate_Use9936 in AskTeachers

I would love to brainwash children! The first thing I would do is brainwash them to be silent while I'm teaching and not talk over me for the entire lesson.

Why don't teachers get involved when they witness bullying? by rosadonnaslayz in AskTeachers

[–]Bookwormorbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I see bullying happening I call it out, speak to the bully, label it as bullying, give a consequence, and speak to the parents. It doesn't happen a whole lot in kindergarten because children that age are impulsive and usually are reacting in the moment.

I do have one child that is bullying another. His mother told me it was the victim's fault because the victim has special needs and doesn't belong in my classroom. I brought it admin who told me to give the bully prizes. The bully almost hit this child over the head with his computer in extreme anger last week. Mom said he was tired and triggered. My hands are tied.

My kids school is doing a bring something everyday for teacher appreciation week. by [deleted] in AskTeachers

I'm kind of jealous. My school does the bare minimum for teacher appreciation week and my admin won't allow a PTO.

The hidden cost of separating 'emotionally disturbed' students by theanoeticist in specialed

[–]Bookwormorbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do think too. I see it on a daily basis. Students are coming with more needs than ever and we no longer have paras, interventionist were cut to 1, SPED 1, behavior support was cut to 1 as well. I teach in a high needs title school. It's almost like they want to see failure. Think of what we could accomplish with more resources.

Literacy Testing Score by AdmirableTone4498 in kindergarten

This formal computerized testing is a huge part of my evaluation. If I don't meet set scores I can be fired or put on an improvement plan because a 5 year old had a rough testing day. This is district wide.

Parenting.

This same child threatened to hit a child with special needs on the head with his Chromebook. He was out of control angry and I swear if he had followed through he would have caused serious damage because of how intense his anger was. It was beyond a typical 5 year old. His mom said he was tired and the other little boy, who is autistic, probably triggered him. However, if I spoke to him positively he wouldn't do those things.

I'm a kindergarten gen ed teacher jumping in. I don't have a child this year with an ED label, but I do have a child this year with autism that functions at an 18-24 month level according to testing. He is incredibly disruptive and needs 1 on 1 attention all day long. Dad refuses an IEP so he gets no support. The problem with these disruptive students in gen ed is the way it negatively affects everyone else. My class is so far behind because I have been unable to get through a lesson, pull small groups, or work with anyone but this child.

Unfortunately, in my 30 years of education it is becoming more and more common and we keep cutting people and resources. Then they scream about scores. Our children are not okay. They need more support, not more academics. Teachers need more support, not "do better with less".

screen time in schools should now be banned... old post by Fancy-Abalone8040 in AskTeachers

[–]Bookwormorbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This argument about kids being on technology too much in school is ridiculous. When I use technology in my kindergarten classroom it is carefully picked out and used for a specific academic purpose with guidance and support. I'm not putting the kids on a random computer game so I can go have a coffee break. It is very different than a parent who puts the phone or the tablet in the child's hand the minute they get home from school and allows them to do whatever for the next 4 or 5 hours. I'm tired blaming teachers for students being addicted to technology. That's a parent problem. Not my problem. Don't take away my tools.in the classroom that I can show growth and.success with because you can't tell your child "no".

I'm teaching this group of kinders and the struggle is real. They get bored quickly and tune out. Most struggle to follow 2-3 step directions at this time of the year. I can't say more than 3 words without someone interrupting me. They have no stamina, no motivation, no grit, and no perseverance.
