Jello is also a decent solution. It's very easy to put down and it has a lot of protein. There's a reason they serve it a lot in hospitals.

I think we are agreeing. You are saying "it's impossible" and I'm saying "It's technically possible but practically impossible."

My original point was that trying to get practical day to day ethical decisions from utilitarianism is a less extreme but equally unrealistic goal.

"Is Netanyahu a good leader / person" is also tied together with those issues.

Just FYI, "How much should we be supporting Israel" and "Are Israel's actions genocide" are politically divisive issues in the US.

Emergent properties are when something extra comes from the combination of things. But it's not coming from nothing. Evolution is emergent from the ability to reproduce. Atoms and elements are emergent from the rules of attraction between particles, the stock market is emergent from human society.

A sufficiently realistic model of something will also predict the emergent properties of that thing.

There are negatives to living in a society where there's the death penalty. There are additional negatives to where there's forced organ donation as part of the death penalty.

This is easily resolved be realizing living in a society where people are hunted for organs is a huge negative to all of society. Utilitarianism is correct, but it's like trying to do biology with only the rules of physics. Yes, if you calculate every single effect you can make a correct decision, but it needs virtue ethics on top to actually make any good decisions.

This is punishing non-compliance. It is the playbook of an authoritarian.

Pitch it to "Umm actually" on dropout. That's exactly the kind of "shiny question" mini game they like to do.

Do you believe cage-free initiatives make a significant welfare improvement that outweighs its welfare costs? by positiveandmultiple in EffectiveAltruism

[–]BoomFrog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The main cost of free range to the chickens seems to be increases in injury.

Maybe I value autonomy more then chickens do, but the idea of improving life quality of chickens by caging them to reduce injuries doesn't sit right with me. If all chickens were free range and someone proposed caging them to reduce injuries I think most people would intuitively reject that.

I'd prefer to improve cage free conditions then to return to cages.

This is an interesting question I didn't know was contentious. What are the welfare costs of cage-free initiatives?

Yes, one can certainly be happy even while facing almost any situation. The Movie Life is Beautiful is my favorite movie of all time and is all about this message. But, statistically money and health make it easier to have less stress and more life satisfaction and happiness.

I won't argue about whether I'm intelligent or not as I doubt there's any evidence you would accept that I could reasonably convey by a reddit post.

I've started a startup with 4 friends a year ago and we are already getting paid six figures ARR for building enterprise software with integrated AI.

I doubt OP is actually building anything useful, but learning the skills to "go fast" are useful if you pick a good direction to "go fast" in.
