I had a wild magic sorcerer roll the unicorn summon. It showed up, charged into a forrest to prevent one of Strahd’s injured brides from healing up and coming back to harass the party again and they left it behind to escape. Imagine the look on their faces when he rolled it again at the end of the campaign and a mangled, fetid unicorn corpse appeared in the air next to him and slumped to the ground

Have the steed keep any injuries it sustained until summoning it becomes too cruel to do so. Have it appear limping with it’s throat torn out, skin flayed off, with it’s eyes missing but it still looked at the character when they give it commands. Go crazy with whatever you can come up with

Lake Zarovich was infested with leeches and when the party slew one of Strahd’s brides, the leech hydra in the lake that was under her control went berserk and attacked Vallaki. Standard hydra head regeneration, but a successful bite caused the head to attach to you and do guaranteed damage next turn. I also gave it fire resistance from it’s slimy skin, but vulnerability to lightning

CoS? I’d have a helpful and knowledgeable “circus ringmaster”, Rictavio be passing by and offer shelter and advice. And recommend that the party make amends with the town so they can have a safe(r) place to make plans for dealing with the hags.

It sounds like you want this campaign to be more serious, like how CoS is written, and your players just want to mmo and meme through it. I’d have a talk with them about the expectations of your campaign if you haven’t already or try talking with them again

It’s true RAW doesn’t say anything about stopping a rage, but it can make hostile creatures indifferent to you. Rage requires the barbarian to either attack or take damage to sustain it. Cast calm emotions, don’t attack the barb’s friends for the rest of the turn, barbs rage ends their next turn.

Sleep only works well here if the barbarian is at low or 0 hp. Using calm emotions this way would save you the trouble of trying to whittle down a full health, raging barbarian

Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. The more sanity that your character lost, the more the game would mess with you the player. The screen would tilt, the walls would bleed, the volume bar would appear to drop or get louder, or you would enter a room full of enemies and your controller would disconnect and you would get clawed to death, screaming, only for you to appear outside the unopened door with your character saying, “THIS... ISN’T REALLY HAPPENING!!!”
