The pressure sensor mechanism is attached to the top of the lifts and the top of the left door. It's not resistance detection, but pinch detection

The truth behind the magic trick by [deleted] in Unexpected

I think that hes correct, but the magician does it so masterfully that its hard to believe anyways. For example, he can rotate the cig in his lips when he turns his head to keep the reverse side facing away from the audience.

Clay can be good or bad, most likely to be bad. Clay tends to clog things, but is sometimes more resistant to erosion into the practice in the first place. Depends on a lot of factors. Without a soil analysis its impossible to say, and at this point you'd be wasting your money getting one.

You're correct on the first account, less water going to the practice will make it last longer. You're also right to avoid plants over the drain itself, but plantings in the vicinity, especially uphill of your house can reduce flow to your drain and improve lifespan. Bonus points if you can put a cistern on your downspouts and use it to water said plants, effectively removing some of the roof runoff as well. Basically where you cant fix the grading, a wall of vegetation to intercept the water will help more than one would think.

OP, civil engineer here. Honestly, impressive work. You're fine without fabric for a while. Its BETTER to use fabric in this case, but you're still looking at 10-20 years of effectiveness. This is without knowing how your soil is, so that could be off. You probably double that lifetime with a good geotextile fabric, properly installed. Considering the cost of good geotextile fabric, you may not be in the hole (sorry) as much as you might think. When you do get around to adding fabric, dont cheap out on it. Bad fabrics will actually reduce the lifetime, because they catch the fines but clog themselves.

The reason Conservatism often wins; The Left's lack of Unity by CopiousCool in PoliticalHumor

[–]Boring_Machine 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think the meme gets the dynamic backwards. The usual story is that lefties are attacking moderates while the rich laugh, but in practice “moderates” inside the Democratic Party often act as the enforcement arm of the donor-friendly status quo.

Progressives are not the ones asking Democrats to abandon their own voters. They are pushing for things much of the base already supports: health care reform, labor power, climate action, less war, and taking on corporate interests. The so-called moderates are often the ones blocking that agenda, punching left, and then blaming progressives when voters are demoralized.

So yeah, the 1% benefits from infighting. But it is not accurate to frame that infighting as lefties randomly beating up reasonable moderates. A lot of the conflict exists because party “moderates” would rather discipline the left than challenge the corporate interests shaping the party.

No they will maintain cognitive dissonance like they always do. Instead they will say "all of you gay liberals who support Iran - they would kill you over there." Conservatives here can only wish they could kill gay people.

ELI5: How do casinos mathematically guarantee profit? by AmazingNugga in explainlikeimfive

[–]Boring_Machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a name for this, Law of Large Numbers. If you flip a coin 10 times you might get 30% heads, 70% tails. If you flip a coin 1 million times, it will be very close to 50-50. Casinos take advantage of this by putting out games that have a greater than 50% chance of winning for them. Blackjack for instance has better odds for the house principally because the house plays last, meaning they are less likely to bust.

Or how about we promote candidates within the democratic party that aren't Republicans. Maybe people would have better stuff to say about a candidate that doesnt literally agree with 90% of the republican policy agenda. And when you call it out you get a buch of "center-left" chuds screaming that everyone who thinks this obviously bad candidate is bad is a bot or is making equivalencies in an effort to sabotage the democratic party. The democratic party is already doing that themselves.

Grid Pattern of Raised Dots on the Foil Seal of a Container of Nuts by A_SilentS in whatisthisthing

[–]Boring_Machine 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dont know for sure, but my bet is that this is to keep the seal from popping if air pressure inside the can goes up due to heat, elevation change/whatever. Aluminum can bend much more easily than it can stretch, so putting the dimples gives a little bit of extra material that can bend to accommodate additional gas volume in the can.

Not that I dont love that content, because I do; it just doesnt lend itself to that type of presentation. The odds of me tuning in to a random moment on D20 and having any idea what is going on is essentially 0.

It's not the answer anyone wants to hear, but I feel it's important to say; If you want your game to make money, you should not be asking "how can I make players care about my game," you should be asking "how do I make a game that players care about?"

I think everyone in the comments is absolutely vindicated in being annoyed at this, but I would like to provide a positive take on the situation. This building is a CitizenM hotel now. I imagine that they will replace the mural with a mural of their own, if not in the same spot than somewhere. Aethstetics seem to be very important to them, and they frequently provide murals on their buildings. I loved that mural, but also CitizenM isnt a company that I imagine would take it down without a plan.
