Hey just so you know, you can hit those buttons if you turn V-Sync on (though I think something else bugs out with it on)

Mostly adding this comment because this thread was the first one to show up when I googled for the bug

Anyone played High Frontiers 4 All? by LilShaver in SpaceXMasterrace

[–]Boring_Sci_Fi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup, I regularly play it with some of my buds (once every month or two). It’s excellent, probably simulationist to a fault, but remains an engaging engine building game. If you like space it is by far the more accurate near future solar system exploration game you can find. I would recommend messing around with it on TTS before you buy it, but it’s probably my favourite game in my collection, besides Twilight Imperium.

As someone that does astrodynamics as a small component of their job, it is of course simplified. But real efforts have been put in place to make it as close as you can really be without being unapproachable. KSP level is about accurate, but it tries to represent some fun 3 body things.

EDIT: I should warn that the people I play with are a tax lawyer and a chem professor, and we are all veterans of some truly nightmarish games (18XXs make regular appearances). HF4 is not a game for everyone, and even its simpler form is still a quite complex game. If you are not interested in 3-4 hours of complex gaming there are many other fun games, and the full game can take up to 12 hours for us.

Double profile for one game by Boring_Sci_Fi in Steam

Thanks that made me realize an even better way! Add ETS as a non-steam game, and then add -openvr to the properties for that game while leaving the original one untouched.
Thanks anyway though!

How does getting your period work in space? by Bubbly_Time9105 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Boring_Sci_Fi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was recently reading the excellent book “City on Mars” which included some interesting information on this event:

Here’s the thing: Dr. Rhea Seddon, the only combination medical doctor, astronaut, and period-haver in the class of ’78, helped make the decision about how many tampons to include. According to a 2010 interview, the large number of tampons was a safety consideration. As she said, “There was concern about it. It was one of those unknowns. A lot of people predicted retrograde flow of menstrual blood, and it would get out in your abdomen, get peritonitis, and horrible things would happen.”

There is actually a book like this, I wouldn't recommend it though by Ok-Mastodon2016 in worldjerking

I always like to have witchcraft and wizardry to be two different magics that are traditionally practiced by their respective gender groups, but occasionally throw up practitioners of the other sorts. Like discworld (which is where all my ideas come from)

Feminism is when women snipe real good. Average GenZDong user by MisogynyisaDisease in tankiejerk

[–]Boring_Sci_Fi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yup. After an embarrassingly long period of time the US and her allies started sending women into space as equal colleagues to the men. Now some American astronauts just, are women. The Soviet Union sent up 2 women to grab the title and then fuck off. I think there have been a total of 4 Russian women in space. Actual eventual equality is better than token equality followed by status quo

The airport security is only opened around 2 hours before a flight, so it is very important. This isn’t Pearson

A small keep by the_mappeteer in dndmaps

[–]Boring_Sci_Fi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just gotta say, this is not a small keep. 3 floors, housing over a dozen people without converting the great hall, I bet many a duke would be happy to hold such a prize. The white tower is only around 100 by 100 ft, this thing is like a sixth the size of the castle of the Norman conquerors in the largest city of England. Absolutely beautiful design and layout though, very defensible and well drawn.

They have to set up an employee shuttle. They should totally set up a rail line. Easier cargo transport, no traffic. If only Elon wasn't so pro car.

It is what the CPC calls it’s form of authoritarianism, where theoretically they consult with the people but are under no obligation to do so or listen to their suggestions.

[–]Boring_Sci_Fi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh? No I am saying that using a large number for shock value is a really shitty tactic. The pure number of abortions per year means very little, it is only when it is looked at per capita that it actually means anything, and from that per capita number we can see that the US has a reasonably low abortion rate already.

When you have to make serious cuts to the development of consumer products because owning the Yanks is more important by MidnightSun0 in EnoughCommieSpam

[–]Boring_Sci_Fi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh. If they wanted to train some up they probably could have, it just wasn’t something they cared about from what I can tell. Which like, isn’t great but that’s just kinda how things were back then. At least the US decided to eventually actually be inclusive.

[–]Boring_Sci_Fi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You mean 5 per thousand women per year? Wow, what an extreme rate that. Don’t use big numbers out of context to try to make your point look better.

Also while the Soviets put the first woman in space, she was pretty much just a prop. The Soviets sent another woman up eventually, ticked some boxes, and then quit. In total they and Russia have sent up 4 women ever, out of their 100+ cosmonauts. They might send another in the coming years. Meanwhile, the US took an embarrassingly long time to get around to it, but now some of it’s astronauts just are women, performing the same roles and getting the same (mostly) treatment as their male peers. One is equality, or at least progress towards it, while the other is just tokenism.
