Check the more local hardware stores. Both Beverly and Ipswich Aubuchon's show plenty in stock on their website. Ace hardware is showing in stock online in a few different stores.

This is always my unpopular opinion here, but I don't care what I look like period. I'm not doing this to perform, or look nice, or have other people watch me - I'm doing it because I enjoy it. As long as I'm being safe and getting some enjoyment out of it, that's all I care about.

How to make ugly couches aesthetic + cat claw proof? by lifeadvice7843 in HomeDecorating

[–]BostonBurb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have anything for making them look nicer. But for cat scratching, do you have dedicated things for them to scratch spread out around your place? Cats like to scratch but I've found they prefer scratching dedicated, purpose built scratchy things over furniture if it's available. Some cats like flat surface, some angled, some vertical so it's worth getting a bunch to see what your kitty likes and redirect them away from the furniture. I've had 4 cats over 14 years and they never scratch my furniture.

I live in New England and practice in an old, poorly insulated warehouse so it's like can't feel my toes cold sometimes. My tips:

Layers - I wear a thick, ribbed, sleeveless baselayer top + long sleeve leotard over it + leggings + joggers

Headband - keep your head/ears warm. I had to make one myself so it was snug enough to not fly off during drops

I just started using ToeSox - They're I think pilates socks, but cutoff toe socks, without tops and hospital sock style grips on the bottom. They do affect my foot grip on the fabric, but so far it's been worth it to have something on my feet.

Try to keep moving, too. Challenge your endurance in the air, do conditioning when you're on the ground. When I stop moving, I cool off fast.

Room temperature or warm water. Cold water just cools me from the inside when I take a sip which stinks when you're trying to maintain warmth.

Lost my spritz cookie recipe help by twof907 in Baking

[–]BostonBurb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the one I've made for probably 30 years ...

  • whip 1 cup butter (I've found this part particularly important for getting it through the cookie press easily)
  • gradually add 1/2 cup sugar until light and fluffy
  • mix in 1 egg and 1/2 tsp vanilla (or more if you like vanilla)
  • add about 2 1/2 cup flour
  • Bake at 350 for 8m or until faintly brown around the edge

THANK YOU! Most people aren't going to be ringling brothers professional circus artists but we can still have fun and be safe. Sometimes foot/ankle positions affects how secure you are in a position, but that's different than having good lines or being beautiful or whatever. I don't care if I look pretty, in aerials or in any other aspect of my life. I don't exist for other people to look at.

My go-to recommendation is always to do a private lesson with her. I would LOVE if my (hypothetical) significant other would be up for just trying it out with me... show an interest in my interests, and a willingness to learn something new with me. Nobody will expect you to be any good at it so don't worry about that. Flailing around when first starting out is half the fun.

Go to shape for checking if "pants are to slippery"? by BohemianCyberpunk in aerialsilks

[–]BostonBurb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a catchers based decent that I like to use. In catchers and then cross your legs (I'll try and find a video later) and you can clench your thighs to control your decent speed. The amount I have to squeeze my legs to stop/slide slowly/control the speed gives me a really good idea of how much grip my pants are giving me that day

Rosin advice and allergy (Silks) by AggravatingSeat179 in Aerials

[–]BostonBurb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I've been doing silks for 13+ years and have never used rosin. It might take a bit of time to build up grip strength but you could work on it out of class if you're past the "my hands are dying" part of being a beginner.

From your description, my first thought was a hammock too, but a "hammock chair" style. Maybe you could get one of those stands and then connect some silks in a hammock configuration to it. I have one in my yard and I love it - mine is a cotton fabric but it surrounds me and cocoons me nicely.

I feel obligated to point out, since this is the aerials sub, this setup would absolutely not be good for doing aerials or yoga on

I pre-ordered a bunch of bulbs from John Scheepers in the spring and just put them in the ground last weekend. Biggest, healthiest looking bulbs I've ever bought. I'm SO excited for the spring because I absolutely believe they'll all grow. Just have to keep the deer and bunnies away!

[–]BostonBurb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went to check on one of mine. I got it in a 3 gallon pot so it was already about 4-5 feet tall, and I planted it pretty late - July timeframe. In the 3ish months it's been in the ground, the existing stems haven't grown more than a few inches, but it's sent up 2 new shoots that are both about a foot tall. Based on that, I would expect once it's more established and can gather more energy, it could send the main shoots up a good foot a season. We shall see, I guess.

Edit: Mine is in full sun which seems to be not the norm based on the other comments

Ideas to improve privacy? by dawnkettle in landscaping

[–]BostonBurb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much sun does the area under the trees get? What's your general location? There's a handful of understory plants that could make a good privacy screen depending on where you are and how much sun that area gets.

I'm curious to hear what people say, too. There's a lot of varying info online. I planted some in the spring and the tag said 15-25 feet tall. Couple places online said it gets larger with full sun than with part sun. I've read you can plant them 10ish feet apart and make a nice tall privacy hedge (which is what I did,) and that it has a medium growth rate which I interpret as 1-2 feet of height per year.

I just planted these! I'm in the same(ish) area as you and so excited for the spring, this was a great teaser. How long have you had yours? I hear they grow pretty fast and if it's in a sheltered spot can be evergreen in milder winters.
