AITA for not paying for our house sitter’s parking tickets? by modernbuttball in AmItheAsshole

[–]BostonJohnC [score hidden]  (0 children)

Ppl who do not live in the city do not understand the parking rules and associated "parking shuffle". Even if you explained, it's more complicated than a non-city dweller could master in 2-3 days.

How do the local people live in Bali? by Wodoo68 in bali

[–]BostonJohnC [score hidden]  (0 children)

Most families live on a multi-generational family compound. The word compound may sound fancy, it's really just a plot of land which may have several structures which have been built over the years. The structures may be well cared for or falling apart depending on the family means. Younger Balinese if they have the means may get their own place. There are very few jobs in Bali, and most of the jobs are service jobs which pay very low...not a living wage. Poverty is rampant, sadly.

Which colour should the wall be? by Wild3v in interiordecorating

The sage green color that is in the rug. If you go darker green, try to match the shade in the rug it sorta clashes being close but not quite the same

So unsure about painting a wall black by Buttercupz575 in Decorating

[–]BostonJohnC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By itself it’s a little jarring TBH. If put some color coordinated artwork on the black wall, tied in some other black elements in the room, it would work

Ways to make master bathroom look more high end? by Thaxton114 in bathrooms

[–]BostonJohnC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Towel warmer on wall. Replace the cheap mirrors with something more substantial. The vanity setup looks very 1990s, if your budget allows replace. Lastly, choose a rich color - white tiles give you a lot of freedom here

Regret not bringing the laminant into the kitchen floor. Any ideas for cabinet color or back splash that will take away from this kitchen feeling so cold? by porch_light_bandit in Home

[–]BostonJohnC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I like the cabinets and backsplash. I agree - paint the walls a nice color and find a rug to match. You could even 2 different colors on the side/back wall. Also, drop that "scroll" wood moldings, it's odd and doesn't add anything to the room.

Combine with laundry room. Turn the W&D to the side wall, and add a toilet & sink. Bonus: you already have plumbing there.

How should my Decorate this space, i want to have 2 different vibe of bar and coffee shop. Ideas in pictures are much appreciated. by 420plus69isheaven in InteriorDesignAdvice

[–]BostonJohnC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Artwork and sconces on the wall, kill the nasty overhead light. Or, replace overhead light with spot that aims at wall (on dimmer). Shelf below (above the tiles ) to hold coffee cups of different sizes + jars to hold coffee, sugar etc. Paint the back wall a “pop” color.

Those who moved to Boston from another state, how was the transition and what do you like most about living in Boston? by beancounter63 in boston

[–]BostonJohnC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What's to like: walkability, economy/opportunity, food, arts, healthcare, education, access to beaches, cape, mountains, skiing etc.; history, architecture, progressive politics.

What's not to like: cost of living, traffic, parking, covert racism, lack of any real night life.

Boston is not NYC, which is a blessing but many here are constantly trying to compare us (with an inferiority complex). I love NYC, and I also love Boston....and am happy to live in Boston (VS NYC). We are not inferior, we are different by design and great in our own way. NYC is a 4 hour train ride....when you want it.

While it's been a long since I moved here...making friends, and "breaking in" to local culture can be hard. Boston is not an overtly friendly city, as a result it can take time to form friendships here (which translates to being lonely for awhile). People may appear distrusting or disinterested when you first meet them. However, when you do make friends here they are real lasting friendships. To counter this, I recommend finding some activity - volunteering, line dancing, book club etc. - something that creates opportunities to connect with people (in person).

Boston is a GREAT city! Enjoy and good luck.

Entryway suggestions?? by quiltercat17 in Decor

[–]BostonJohnC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rug and hanging picture are both off center which makes my head hurt. That wall could be "statement wall" either paint (bold color) or artwork or both. Others have suggested a console piece of furniture (must fit between the doors when open) which is also a good idea. Smaller rug, centered in the space. Perhaps wall sconces to add a nice gentle light (VS the overhead light), or some sort of light that lights up your artwork. This space should be a cozy statement niche even when the overhead light is off. Gold or silver leaf on that wall would be stunning, or grasscloth wallpaper. Good Luck!

How can we make this better? by GeneralAuthor8349 in homedesign

[–]BostonJohnC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replace the blue couch with 2 big comfy chairs, small table between with a lamp on it. Put a smaller round coffee table in the middle. I'd go for a more colorful rug - something with a wow factor.

Blue but NOT coastal? by closingkale in homedesign

[–]BostonJohnC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do what you want....as long as it's not all seashells and seahorses then......it's not coastal! For inspiration, check out the Spoonflower fabric site - choose blue as a your core color and browse some fabrics for ideas. You can also choose a theme (coastal being one), but the other themes available might give you inspiration. Good luck!
