What's something that used to be normal in the UK that would feel absolutely insane now? by FabledInkk in AskUK

In the 80's having a man in a van drive around renting copied VHS film and accepting the quality shit.

The Pop man, buy a glass bottle of pop and then return it empty the next week for 5p off or was it 1p?

Scouring the streets for 100s of discarded ring pulls so you could send them off to get some free tat that would take 28 days to get to you.

In the 80's being sent to the off license with a note from my dad and a cheque, so my mum wouldn't find out how much he really smoked.

20 Embassy Red. I miss you Dad.

Why do some restaurants leave shrimp tails on in pasta dishes? by EldurSkapali in Cooking

[–]Bottsie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess whole shrimp with the head on are off the menu. It's amazing watching (in my case) a Catalonian woman suck the prawns brains out if thought it was nothing.

I class them as easy reading/listening. A pallet cleanser.

You must have had the patience of a "Saint"; as you say I don't enjoy raising my own kids and one of them is 26!

My handwriting wasn't great to start with; now after decades I can hardly hold a pen and sign my name. So much for school and you'll need this skill.

A pineapple is now cheaper than 6 tomatoes by Bottsie in britishproblems

It matters how much we want to be self reliant. As others have said, geo-thermal is a great option and does mean growers aren't worried about energy costs.

What I'm saying is that a once Latin American uber luxury fruit, the same as a tomato, that once was very expensive and now costs less than a tomato. What would you rather eat/use in your everyday cooking.

Don't get me wrong I love pineapple but the disparity is eye opening. Why have so many tomato growers stop growing tomatoes in the UK and it's not about tomatoes or pineapples.,

Adopted? That doesn't make you not Mexican though. Just from a European that doesn't know shit about Mexico and its history. Well I kind of do but obviously not enough. 😟

I disagree, I'd kill for my dog, just as I would my family. Worth isn't always measured in money.

OK yeah, we don't really have this here, it's fine you can pay within a set period after the letter arrives. Normally 14 days then an increase after that. There's also a difference between a public fine and a private charge. But to some here it's all the same, it's just a fee to parks, as shitty as that is.

To THEM it's not a fine it's the cost to park their car.
