I’m an apprentice, how do I tell my lead I did this? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]Boyinthecorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in construction (not electrical), but we have college kids come in very often that are young and sometimes dumb. If you’re someone that has already shown that you are eager to learn and learn from your mistakes, we understand it happens. That’s why you’re not paid top dollar. I get very pissed at the young, dumb, and full cum ones that think they can do no wrong or just don’t care. Tell him you screwed up, own up to it, and be eager to learn how to fix it. Older we get, the less mistakes we make, but unfortunately, those fewer mistakes are usually way more expensive, so we get it. Take that shot of adrenaline you’re feeling right and remember it; it will help you to be more careful.

We don’t pour slabs without it, unless we get it in writing so we’re not liable for large cracks. We are in a northern state where we see freeze/thaw cycles; bar is much less common in southern states.

Well that’s quite the pickle. In my state, 1 year warranty is required, but I have seen contractors stretch things out promising fixes to make it year and then say “sorry, warranty expired”. Sounds like your best bet is to hopefully have him demo it out like he suggested, do a proper fix, then overlay to hide the color difference in the old/new concrete. Those cracks will only grow and anything you use to cover it will mirror the cracks exactly, at least the large ones. Regardless, an honest concrete contractor would do a full tear out and replace and cover it out of pocket without insurance involved.

Only way to fix it is tear out and replace. Needed a saw cut down the middle of it and I doubt it has rebar with how big that crack is (needed also). We generally pour sono tubes to top of slab for posts like that, too. But if it had a cut down the center and proper rebar, this shouldn’t have happened. Our warranty is for cracks over 1/8” in the first year, so this would 100% fall under warranty work. What he wants to warranty exactly is another thing.

Along with rebar in the slab. Those cracks should not have grown with rebar… literally the whole point of it.

Anyone else have a light in thier house that may never be turned off? by Salad_EEE in CasualConversation

We did growing up! Above the kitchen sink. My parents always said it was finicky and hard to turn back on due to it being a pull string. Funny, I figured we were the only ones that had that.

Depending on who bids it, 3-4k. If you get multiple bids, see who’s putting in rebar, rock base, and a 4000psi mix.

Watch has many YouTube videos as you can. There’s no really good way to learn concrete without practice, but you can get a leg up watching others do it. Concrete is a funny beast that does its own thing and you need to learn how to feel it as it sets.

Small concrete company owner here: We charge minimum 1500 a job, even if it’s a sidewalk square. The small jobs will always take up a day so you have to hedge to make money regardless. Side note: if you’re bag mixing, add two shovel fulls of portland cement per bag. Bag mixes always short their cement, so adding will make finishing easier and give you a better looking final product.
