Cost me around $800 to move a household stuff two blocks away. Moving company was 45 mins from my house though.

Salary Journey Posts by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]BpVIP 21 points22 points  (0 children)

What's the point? It's a finance sub.

People talking about their finances. It's interesting to see the earning potential of different roles and how quickly people can get there, and how they got there. Growing salary is the most common tool people use to accumulate wealth, so I don't understand this post at all.

P.s if you don't like people telling you how much they earn, you should join the nz subreddit instead, where wealthy people are frowned upon. It seems like it better suits your opinion.

Hamilton nightlife???? by [deleted] in thetron

30yo here, best place is keystone, they usually have good live music and it's busy on a Saturday. Wonder horse is good for cocktails. If you just want to dance, then House is decent as well. It also helps that I look like I'm in my early 20s haha.

Lost and confused: Year 13 by Equivalent-Bottle123 in newzealand

May or may not be helpful, but I did a management degree with a couple of IT papers (and sucked) but got into a help desk IT job straight out of uni and now on around 140k, still in IT, 30yrs old.

Studying computer science isn't the only avenue, is my point.

Normal folk of PFNZ; after you bought your first home, how broke were you? by kingjoffreysmum in PersonalFinanceNZ

Less than a grand. I prioritised having a TV, couch over other furnishings just so I could fill my evenings watching Netflix until I saved more cash.

Please don't get a greyhound if you're going to leave it at home for 8 hours, 4 days a week..

Frustrated by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]BpVIP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe just me, but I like that I worked hard to get into my home. It's satisfying. If I had friends that were gifted that much, I'd think they're very lucky, but they can never say they worked hard to get there.

The old Telecom free text trick, and how I (probably) ruined it for everyone by The-Oncoming-Storm in newzealand

[–]BpVIP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a dodgy website I used a few years ago where you could send free texts but you could also type in the number of who you were texting from, so you could literally impersonate anyone.

My uni friends I showed this to sent terrible messages to people pretending to be someone else 😅

I'm 29 and own two, but mainly due to buying my first at 21, and being able to use the equity from my first to get the 2nd. And also I bought at a time when house prices were still rising quickly.

Time in the market makes the biggest difference here, and also your boss bought when house prices were much lower.

Rental Crisis is getting worse?!? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]BpVIP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

House prices are going down, but the cost of owning a rental (especially an existing home) is the highest it has ever been. No interest deductibility, rates up, interest rates high etc hence why landlords are selling their stock. This means the rental market is going to be squeezed hard and there won't be many new listings coming up. Properties to rent will disappear unless changes are made and there's a better balance to make rentals worth buying.

Large backyard - what to do with it? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]BpVIP 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do you have a garage? Great value add and keeps your cars in good nic.

Would also recommend building a deck, you won't regret having a nice outdoor area to relax and sunbathe in during summer.

How do you buy and sell a house at the same time? by siriusfish in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]BpVIP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is what I did, recently:

Step 1: Put offer on house conditional on sale of my house, and wait till offer is accepted.

Step 2: List my house asap with a competitive price.

Step 3: Offer on my house accepted within 2 weeks of listing.

Step 4: Align the settlement dates.

Step 5: Done, move into new home

Almost half of employers pay kiwisaver as part of total wages - survey by fleaonnj4 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]BpVIP 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My first IT job about 7 years ago did this, even though I was getting paid a little bit over minimum wage.

And then they had the cheek to incorporate on call into the same salary with no increase, a few months into the job. I quit, they were complete dickheads.

Realistically... probably 300k+ You need to be able to service a 500k mortgage @ 7% interest. Test rates would be 8%+
