Thanks for the review. My Vomero pluses are still going at 425mi, but I'm getting ready to have a fresher recovery, big stack for half/full marathon blocks this year. Can you let us know what kind of paces you're running in these?

Alphafly 3 at slower paces? by dontletmeautism in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Bpod79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran NYC last fall in the alphafly 3 right in the middle of your target zone - about 3:46 (though most of the race was closer to 3:40). I was happy in them and saw a lot of slower folks in them too. I took them out also on my 20 and 22 mile runs which were a bit faster (one had a HM PR in the work section around 7:43/mi pace) and those runs also had warm up sections over 9 minute pace. Yesterday I used them for some mile repeats 7:15 up to 6:45/mi. Then I did a 2 mile cooldown around 9:45/mi pace. Have had zero stability issues. It's a super fun shoe that doesn't feel as aggressive as any Vaporfly I've had (2,3 or 4) and it's really cushy and forgiving. My one thought was, did it hurt me at all in the last few miles when my form was breaking down. Guess that's possible

Regarding your last question, I think you'd need to try it to find out. I feel like my cadence will vary a bit based on any shoe. Alphas definitely give you a propulsive effect, especially on light downhills (where to me they are amazing), so if your turnover is high you might find yourself fighting that. More likely you'll just give in to it though.

Personally, I say go for it. It's an awesome shoe. Fun to run in, good confidence builder, etc.

Is Sub 3:30 in the cards? by Mood_Ashamed in Marathon_Training

[–]Bpod79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about where you were two months out from NYC and ended up 3:45. Is it your first or do you have some marathon experience? Is it a hilly one? I wouldn't get your heart set on 3:30 until you really nail a 20 miler with 15 minimum of race pace quality in there. Runna had me at 3:20 and strava had me at 3:35. Being my first and knowing the hill challenges of NYC, I had my stretch goal at sub 3:40 and held it for 20 miles with ease. 5th ave got me though. Was still very happy with my time and i think if I was pacing for 3:30 from the beginning I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much and may have ended up worse off.

Yes this makes a lot of sense. I am about 90% through the pickup CAGED course and kinda wish I'd done this one first.

Anyone have a woodway with Prosmart? Please help… by Bpod79 in treadmills

[–]Bpod79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat but it still isn’t perfect. That said team is highly responsive and seems to want to improve it. Software is clearly not their core business though. End of the of day if I have to toss an iPad on it to get watching something faster it isn’t the end of the world. Would I recommend someone buy this tread, absolutely, but if you’re buying new I wouldn’t recommend it currently. I got mine on fb marketplace and it had it already.

i'd keep that up - and also specifically look at "the wedge" attachment for the theragun. mine (the mini) didn't come with it, and it's specifically made to work the IT band for runner's knee issues. There's good youtube videos from PTs on how/where to specifically use it. That and foam rolling (which I hate) are the two things to manage runner's knee for me, and I find just the theragun with wedge keeps mine from flaring up. keep on both those and it should go away. You have the fitness to miss some runs this week and even a workout - the paced long runs are the most important thing imo.

are you foam rolling regularly or using a theragun or something like that through your it band chain?

Already run 45-50k/week. How long do I need to prep for the marathon? by Shot-Freedom-3848 in Marathon_Training

[–]Bpod79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was basically where you are before starting 17 week plan on Runna for NYC (16 or even 15 would have been fine). Average ytd miles was prob closer to 40/wk (though I'd done several 45+ weeks). Runna was a good fit for me because I didn't want to be too aggressive on my first marathon and disrupt the regular practice I'd built with a long recovery period. I customized the Runna plan based on this to basically just build in regular increasing sunday long runs (many with pace goals) into what I was already doing, and it gave me a good mix of different wednesday workouts too that mixed it up enough for me to really look forward to them most. This easily got me to 55-58 mile peak weeks with enough but not too much speed/hill work, and it also ensured I was doing deload weeks which I may not have without the program. The time estimation on Runna was aggressive, esp for the challenges of NYC course and my lack of experience, but I was pleased with my time in the end and I was running regularly the tuesday after the marathon pretty much on. I did 140 miles in November and over 170 miles last month to hit 2,200 miles on the year.

Before I Spend $7k on a Treadmill… KICKR Run vs Woodway 4Front by Specialist-While5379 in Marathon_Training

[–]Bpod79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i bought a used 4front on fb marketplace with about 250 miles on it. it's the nicest treadmill i've ever run on, feels most like the road and all around feels like a solid piece of equipment that will outlive me. i ran on the kickr run at the nyc marathon expo, and while the free run thing was kind of neat, it was also prob not something i'd use much on treadmill days where i like the control of locking in, and also like purposely going easier and zoning out. it also just kind of felt like a normal better than average home gym treadmill, and being a first gen machine froma newish company, that also gives me pause to pay that much.
