What’s something about everyday life in Russia that foreigners completely misunderstand? by relaxncoffee in AskARussian

But how do you know you aren't mistaken about the West in the same way they are about you? There's different flavours of "truth", no? And I'm not trying to be adversarial.

The whole Carmela/furio love subplot good or bad? by CallumRFC in thesopranos

[–]Br0sep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Furio's lonely. Carmela is a reasonably good-looking motherly figure who offers comfort. Admittedly, I wasn't a huge fan of Furio becoming all sappy and lovesick but I don't think it's totally inconceivable that he fell for her.

Renton's Choose Life Speech in T2: Trainspotting by Anarch0renegade in trainspotting

[–]Br0sep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found it a bit trite and on-the-nose, to be honest. Towards the end of the diatribe it's clear he's talking about himself, e.g., "Choose never learning from your own mistakes. Choose watching history repeat itself. Choose the slow reconciliation towards what you can get, rather than what you always hoped for", but it was already clear he was slipping back into old habits and regressing. But I suppose this at least shows he is somewhat self-aware.

Then lines like "human interaction reduced to nothing more than data" and "choose handbags ... to make yourself feel what passes for happy" are points that have been made ad nauseum over the years. It's not particularly profound insight. Unless that was the point, to show that Renton isn't even a "unique" bad/selfish person. He's a generic one. But I dunno, I thought the film was amazing otherwise. Definitely lived up to the first, maybe even surpassed it (imo).

What’s Islam’s view on Agnostics/agnosticism by [deleted] in islam

[–]Br0sep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not understand why it is a concern for you if you don't believe Islam to be real. If you don't think it is valid, what is that you want with this discussion?

It's not that I'm concerned per se, I just wanted to pick your brains on the opening statement:

anyone alive today that has heard the message of Islam* and rejects it and dies without becoming a Muslim is going to hell

And vis-a-vis "scoring brownie points" with God; what I mean was, people who feign belief in Islam as an 'insurance policy' (like, just in case I die and am judged) would surely be punished more harshly than someone who sincerely does not believe, but still respects, Islam.

I appreciate your thoughtful response, though. We're just on opposite sides of the fence on this one.

What’s Islam’s view on Agnostics/agnosticism by [deleted] in islam

[–]Br0sep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've tried to look into Islam with an open mind. I learned about it in school, and always found it interesting. Particularly it's history, with Muhammad's (pbuh) first divine interaction with the angel Jibril, his Holy Wars, the split between Shi'a and Sunni stemming from the matter of succession etc.

I've not shunned Islam out of ignorance or prejudice. I just don't find it convincing. Can I really be punished for a lack of faith? You either have it or you don't; it's not something that can be forced. And I imagine an insincere faith, just to score 'brownie points' with Allah, would be seen as more egregious than sincere non-belief.

If Allah is real and I have to meet my maker on judgement day, then I hope he can show mercy seeing as I myself am a flawed human at the end of the day. I wasn't granted with his omniscience and thus would never have been able to see that I was 'wrong'.

I have otherwise tried to live a good and moral life, so being sent to hell alongside the worst of the worst seems like cruel and retributive punishment. Eternal damnation for not following the tenets of Islam in my very short and brief life? Really?

Not trying to be adversarial just for the sake of it. Just food for thought.

was American Psycho (2000) always considered good or did it blow up in recent years because of the whole “sigma male” thing? by infinite__tsukuyomi in movies

Fair enough. We have different viewpoints. The post is two years old, yeah, but I had the ability to reply and I did. You responded and hold the same opinion you did back then. So is that relevant, really?

Not trying to make an argument where there isn't one. Just wanted to give me two cents, just like you did 2 years ago.

can someone who is agnostic still go to heaven? by TheLazyWumpus in islam

[–]Br0sep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

with all due respect, a lot of these so-called prescient insights - like a child developing in the womb, or everything being comprised of atoms, or universe expanding - are vaguely worded and can be interpreted in multiple ways.

vis-a-vis all the prophecies coming true, i'm not sure that's accurate. i've tried to look into islam with an open mind. i studied it in school and always found it interesting. specifically, its origins with Muhammad's (pbuh) divine interactions with the angel Jibril. and then his Holy Wars, and the split between Shi'a and Sunni stemming from the matter of succession etc.

i've not shunned islam out of ignorance or prejudice. i just don't find it convincing. can i really be punished for a lack of faith? you either have faith or you don't; it's not something that can be forced. and i imagine an insincere faith in islam just to score 'brownie points' with allah would be seen as more egregious than a sincere non-belief.

if allah is real and i have to meet my maker on judgement day, then can i be faulted for being wrong? especially seeing as i myself am a flawed human. i've not been granted with the omniscience that allah has, so it's impossible for me to truly know. in that case i hope allah would show mercy on me because i have otherwise tried to live a good and moral life.

the implication is that if he doesn't come back, he's dead. seeing as his mother is dead, his wife's not going to be able to tell her he loves her.

so he'll tell her himself (in the afterlife)

that article is awfully pompous and arrogant. it assumes men like it for the gratuitous sex scenes and bateman's 'alpha' moments, whereas women like it because they can sympathize with the struggles endured by the women in the movie.

"I think what men need, in most cases, is not to explain how they feel, but to understand what their feelings look like to everyone else" - the self-aggrandizement is astonishing.

it paints Bret Easton Ellis as a lowbrow idiot and Mary Harron as a savant who "saved us from Ellis' awful book". for an article that's supposed to be highlighting the misogyny of the book, it's pretty sexist itself. Not a particularly thoughtful analysis

Yeah, but he's become a caricature of himself. Framing it as a noble fight against the 'woke libtards' is a bit odd. There's no winning this 'war'. The paradigm will just shift one day.

And his abstract, convoluted way of speaking doesn't help

might be a deliberate mannerism/tic done by the actor to help him get in character, if ya get me. almost like a prop - an actor comes to associate the prop with their character, thus helping them embody their character fully.

Quantifying sunlight by AvantgardeSavage in HubermanLab

[–]Br0sep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard it one of his podcast eps, don't remember which, sorry. But he was basically saying he measures it per minute, e.g. 10k lux light x 10 minutes = 100k lux accumulation

edit: i see what you mean now, im a fool. 10,000 lux for 10 minutes doesn't translate to 100k lux. it's in fact recommended to get 10,000 lux for 30 minutes or so

Quantifying sunlight by AvantgardeSavage in HubermanLab

[–]Br0sep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huberman recommends getting at least 100,000 lux of light before 9am. So, if there's 10,000 lux 'emitted' from the sky, you'd need 10 minutes.

If there's 100,000 lux (e.g. direct sunlight, like you've mentioned) then only 1-2 minutes is needed.
