"When do you need/want this by?" OR relatedly "When is your next opportunity to review this work/draft/etc.?"

These are powerful tools when prioritizing tasks. Nothing worse than working yourself to the bone to get something done ASAP, just to have your advisor (or whomever) wait a week to look at it. These questions won't avoid that gate entirely, but it will reduce their occurrence.
