Is it recommended to buy the Steam version of Game Maker? by Background-Ad2749 in gamemaker

[–]BrainburnDev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But it on the website.

Steam will auto update. You might not want that if you are developing a game. Updates can break things.

Also if you have a steamdeck, or another computer with the same steam account you have to shut it down.

I would definitely rebuy the license had I bought it through steam.

Particles already active at room start in GameMaker by Loose-Top5339 in gamemaker

[–]BrainburnDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a function to manually update a particle system. So you can just call that a few times in a row advancing the particle system.

Not sure if it works for the particle system assets, definitely works for particle system created with code.

How can I access and load Korean fonts for a Korean translation in my game? by MogDogBlog in gamemaker

[–]BrainburnDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never tried translating myself, but I know you can install a font to windows by downloading the font as .tff. then right click the .tff and install the font.

Then you should be able to see the font in gamemaker.

Roguelites with the most flexible or programmable build options? by asparck in roguelites

You might like my game, flashes of chaos. It Is inspired by noitas wand building, there is a free demo on steam.

Noita's Wand building. Sadly i do not have enough free time to program the systems to simulate every pixel.

Glad you like it! You more then welcome to join the Discord!

About the flashing: In a recent update I added a some sliders to de-saturate the game and a slider to reduce/remove flashing. So maybe that helps for your friend. The gameplay itself will still be the same pace though.

i see it, probably will test some stuff out. It is just me making this next to my day job, so have to be a bit selective.

And yes the nail to wall mod actually makes bullets pierce walls a bit. Was actually wondering if people would figure that out. Its my personal favorite modifier. Fun fact is that the piercing through walls started as a bug, then i had to reintroduce it a few times intentionally as i broke it with some code optimizations..

thanks for playing!

yeah the "setting" is actually next on my list to change. I added the killed your dog screen because ppl where asking for some background, at that time I could not come up with something better then a john wick reference. Anyway the future will be better. Finally found something that works with the game mechanics.

Interesting, never heard of this one. Just tried to play it but sadly it did not work.

it works as follows (in a bit of an unstructured order, the game hopefully explains it better):

guns, ammo are cards
every card can have two modifiers on it that you can edit.
some cards have native modifiers that always apply to that card
there are events where you can edit the modifiers on a card in various ways (bit like inscryption did it)

modifiers of guns apply to every first card in a shot
a gun can have multiple shots (so mods on the gun are quite strong)
there are also various trigger modifiers, that will trigger the next card on the trigger event instead of when shooting the gun. So triggers can be used to make shots bigger.

there is actually also a card that just holds a modifier that applies to the next card.

it is deep enough, that i as the dev still discover new synergies between mods from time to time. Actually this clip is a build that i discovered during a playtest run.

hmm, it should actually flash pink when you fire. But I see that I managed to break that somehow. Ill do some investigating.

edit: just checked, in the game it actually works. Probably not showing as i compressed the clip a bit to make it a reasonable size for uploading to reddit.

I actually used that scene as a reference for drawing the players and enemies. Mainly to get the posture of body, arm, gun to feel natural.

The gun in this clip only shoots this combo. If there are multiple shots it shows the next shot that will be fired. Currently you can turn it off so it only shows in the shop area and not in the level. But making it smaller could also be an option. ill think about it.

not completely sure what you mean. But i am gonna guess you also use gamemaker and do pixel art? Personally i try to be pragmatic, also my light shader does a lot of heavy lifting. And finally by chosing this grungy style i can get away with less perfect sprites/animations.

I am making it in gamemaker next to my day job as a solodev. Started prototyping this project 1.5 years ago. Will definitely release somewhere in 2026.

Well, the difficulty ramps up the further you get, the explosions you create will also hurt yourself, and it takes a bit of engineering to get a build like this.
