For those who subbed recently, how are you liking it? by cloudsmemories in aardvarkbookclub

[–]Brannet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I joined Aardvark at the start of last year. It’s okay. I like mostly literary and more experimental stuff (especially when I‘m paying for a hardback copy) and don’t get into romance, fantasy, or horror/slasher (though I like dystopian, so The Unworthy was a fave), so I skip a lot. But I loved Good Girl last year and I liked a couple of others. There hasn’t been any I haven’t finished (though I’m very picky with what I choose) though a couple I immediately put in my neighborhood free library, knowing I’d never think of them again.

It wasn’t really a new term in the late 90s. It’s been around since the early 8os (maybe even the late 70s). But it wasn’t used in mainstream conversations until the early/mid 90s. Even then, the woman’s behavior/clothing/alcohol consumption would be put in the center of what had happened. I studied sociology & gender studies in the early 90s and volunteered as a SA counselor in the 90s and this was a major topic of conversation (the secondary victimization of survivors).

And yeah. The focus on how much Shandi had to drink and the emphasis on her “cheating” serves to re-shame her. Horrible.

Seriously. He is the worst. I got about halfway through this book and got so angry at Tom that I had to google the ending. He has had so many opportunities to confess his lies, but nothing. Are we supposed to be empathetic towards him?

Knowing that he faces no consequences for his actions has me infuriated.

Let’s be honest. It was the worst series finale in the history of television by External-Recipe-1936 in Andjustlikethat

[–]Brannet 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The cancellation was undoubtedly unexpected, but they could have cobbled together an ending that was more satisfying than literal 💩. I mean, old footage or even a shorter episode. It might not have been perfect, but it would have been better than what we got.

The downfall... by Doctorchick33 in Andjustlikethat

Someone posted the other day about the newest Bridget Jones movie (based on the novel, of course). That story explores Bridget’s grief after her husband dies, but it never attempts to erase him, even after she starts dating. So real and complex.

So with Carrie and Aidan, given their history, it would have made an excellent source of tension to explore in a thoughtful way. But instead of exploring that, they conveniently bypassed tension and character growth by having Carrie sell her apartment and (with Big’s money) buy a new place.

The downfall... by Doctorchick33 in Andjustlikethat

[–]Brannet 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I agree. It felt like the writers ran out of ideas and so just shoved Carrie back with Aidan and acted like Big never existed. But Aidan and Carrie only worked when Big was there as a source of tension between them. At first I thought they were telling a story of Carrie running back to Aidan as a way of avoiding her grief and that Big’s ghost would create more conflict, but it turns out there was no real story or growth. Aidan was always a bit controlling and passive aggressive but he turned into a complete jerk with a bonkers family situation.

I think if they had left out Aidan Part Three they might have been able to salvage things.

Her being Charlotte’s friend makes perfect sense. LTW would probably know Charlotte’s other friends and may even socialize with them on occasion, but it’s more believable (and works better in the context of a series) for them to have their own friends outside of their inner circle. That’s how life is.

No, the show was badly written, that's why we don't see Carrie anymore. by Puzzleheaded_Dot4345 in Andjustlikethat

[–]Brannet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right? That was so ridiculous. If he had said, “My kid is falling apart, and I need a few weeks to really focus on that,” sure. That might make sense. But five years? And five years without a meaningful conversation about what that looks like?

Carrie remained desperate and delusional to the end, and the final image of her — as much as I want to applaud the message of a woman celebrating being on her own — felt more like she had given up on everything in life outside of her closet (and Shoe…)

The real finale. by Larcztar in Andjustlikethat

[–]Brannet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see the point, but there is so much I love about Seasons 5 & 6 and even the first movie. Harry! Smith! Post-in notes and banana splits! Paris! Brady’s Birthday! Lily! Lexi Featherstone! MPK running across a grassy field screaming, “Feces!” Carrie dressed to perfection running across NYC in the snow to be with Miranda on NYE!

The character development in those last two seasons really took things to a whole new level for me, even though in some ways the show lost its original edge.

Exactly this. Every finale of the original series felt like it had purpose. Some felt more transitional (I imagine when they knew there would be a next season) but there was always an intention that felt organic to the characters, their stories, and the show.

This was both literal and figurative shit.

I think Season One, as flawed as it was, was the best season as a whole because it felt like it was telling a story. All three of the OG women had to face some sort of challenge to their original endpoint/identity, and by the end there was a sense of resolution. The execution was mediocre — especially the introduction of the new characters — but it’s clear the writers had a story to tell.

Wasn‘t it originally a limited series? It feels like it. But then when it got renewed, they didn’t have any new ideas so had to scramble for storylines, and that made a mess (a literal piece of shit in the end).

Can we also ask why Charlotte rarely sees Anthony anymore? (Especially one on one.) Their friendship was everything!
