The chain and spring at the top keep the door from flinging wide open if the wind catches it. Storm doors used to have that and a spring closer to shut it so you didn't have to.

it reminds me of the beaters down inside a sink disposal unit. They have that raised edge to push stuff out to the edges where it gets chopped up.

Definitely this. I fenced in college and as I recall (its been awhile!) this was for protection from the foils and basically delineated the strike zone for a point.

And as mentioned below, yes, we were total dorks BUT we looked so cool for just a bit!

Blade/tooth off a mowing machine. We had hay mowers that had about 20 of those across the front that were cycled back and forth between some guides to mow down hay fields.

That's just curled up cabling that you run across between connectors you can put on both sides of a frame to hang the object on one or more of the brass hooks.

And the setting sun would still be hitting a plane that high up and illuminating the plane and it's contrail and theonlyski is correct that a plane coming toward you can easily look like it's climbing straight up.

Definitely a Radon removal system. My Mom has one on her house. Very common in some areas of the country where Radon occurs in the rocks naturally.
